denisfidha:Ok thats understandable, but dont they have APCs? They ordered 150 OTT Puma MRAPs from South Africa..... or so i heard! The only reasonable explanation i can think of for using a tank for Sniper cover, is if they thought the sniper was carring something bigger than a 7.62x51mm NATO |

Henry120: None of the police choppers is based at the recce base in Ruiri, which is on the outskirts of Nairobi, up until yesterday is when two choppers from other arms of government were given to them (hopefully as a temporary measure as they await their own dedicated helicopers) The GSU The General Service Unit (GSU) is a paramilitary wing of the Kenya Defence Forces and Kenyan Police, consisting of highly trained police officers and special forces soldiers, transported by seven dedicated Cessnas and three Bell helicopters Having been in existence since the late 1940s, the GSU has fought in a number of conflicts in and around Kenya, including the 1963 – 1969 Shifta War and the 1982 Kenyan coup. The Kenyan police outlines the objectives of the GSU as follows, to deal with situations affecting internal security throughout the Republic, to be an operational force that is not intended for use on duties of a permanent static nature, and primarily, to be a reserve force to deal with special operations and civil disordersBut the GSU (of which recce is part of) is a bigger unit, but all the helicopers are under one wing of the police, which means one law enforcement department can request to use another departments helicopter when its not using them..... (But now the recce have been given two dedicated choppers to be stationed on stand-by at their base) like here (pic), Administration Police using a Kenya Forest service chopper for supply/transport

Off topic a bit but i think it's still about security. What do you guys think about an African media dedicated to 24hours news that brings global news but with special focus on African issues to Africans in Africa and also Africans in diaspora? The reason i am saying this is that: the Kenyan massacre is not being given much attention by the world media. 12 people got killed in France in #charlieHebdo and you get world media and world leaders trooping out on the street to march in solidarity. So i am thinking that if an African country can build its media such that the media is independent of the government and that media has an African reach like Aljazeera has in the middle east and the CNN/BBC and also CCTV have in their respective spheres, that would be great, don't you think? The NTA or the SABC is what i am looking at here. But the NTA is written off already because under the new government we just eected, a government with post civil war mentality and is not in touch with modern things, the NTA will certainly not be reformed to become like what i have described. This leaves only the SABC as the media outlet that can really do the job. What do you guys thik about my idea? |

MikeCZAR: No actually. The SU-30 brings to the table deep strike/ interjection, much larger payload and more powerful power plants. It with the increasing threat of ISIS, Boko-Haram, AQAP, MUJAO in the west, sahel and North Africa region, it is imperative that militaries like that of Nigeria posses the operational capability to strike militants or threats were ever they are in the region. My problem with the SU-30 is it's high cost, high maintenance requirements. This is where the JF-17, a natural progression from the F-7 comes in to feel in the gap. The JF-17 is a low-cost 4G fighter which has an impressive range and at best replicate the requirements of the SU-30. Ideally, 20 JF-17 and 8 SU-30's should do just fine for the NAF. 2 Likes |

jln115:I guess tanks were the only available amoured vehicle at the barracks in Garrisa, there are about 100 army barracks in Kenya, at-least one in every major town with a sizable population. 150APCs wouldn't be enough to distribute to every camp, especially now when half of the 150 Puma MRAPS are in Somalia, even with recent purchase of IFV ......... 1 Like |

MikeCZAR: Yeah it was apparent. Recce pilots/ground crew would be drawn from the Airforce pool. 2-3 Helicopters won't be difficult to maintain for an elite unit. At least 2 MI-17's or Super-Pumas for a Rapid Response Force isn't too much to ask. Again the forestry Helicopter gifted in the interim to the recce unit gives additional credence to my position that LUH's are useless to military and QRF's. Even with that LUH, equipment would still have to be transported by road. Denisfidha, thanks for clarifying. 1 Like |

Craziebone, we have both TVC news and Arise news, Nigerian news channels that are world class by any standard. They should tailor their programmes to adequately cater to their African viewers. |

craziebone:In my opinion, its not been given much attention as the #charlieHobbo attack , one rason bieng it happened on the outskirts of the country, and Kenya is a #rd world country while France is a First world.....But I think it was reported enough, Messages of condolences have been sent from the Pope, his higness -UAE ,Algeria, japan,China,Nigeria,US,,Israel,France, even Iran, Kenyaattack was even trending in washington DC with ppl sending condolences... Today, there were demonstrations held in Nairobi by university students to mourn the victims and blame the gorvenment wich had intelligence but failed to act on it. in Solidarity university students from Paris, held demonstrations in solidarity, also from philipines, georgia and a state in the US (forgot its name). It was kinda encouraging to know the world stands with us in this hard times.. http://english.irib.ir/news/iran1/item/207331-iran-condemns-al-shabab-terrorist-attack-in-kenya http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2015/04/03/UAE-President-offers-condolences-over-Kenya-deaths.html http://rbth.com/news/2015/04/03/putin_sends_condolences_to_kenya_leader_after_university_attack_44969.html http://www.forbes.com/sites/mfonobongnsehe/2015/04/04/obama-promises-to-visit-kenya-despite-terror-attacks/ But there is a bad side too to being given too much attention, especially a black African country like Kenya, to a large extent dependent on tourism.... once a stereotyped white guy hears a ppl are being killed in Africa for bieng Christians, he will wait for five fears before decides to whether come or not ok thats my end of talking, going back to pics only |

Henry120:But the JF-17 can fill the long strike capability by bolstering the NAF with tankers less than 5 of them. Which can still serve as troop, equipment and light logistics transport. To say the SU-30 is a "long strike aircraft for NAF" i believe will deny the NAF to have tanker aircraft tying NAF to west Africa. |

MikeCZAR:-if the powers that be what to make it happen, it can happen -If its about cost, the Kenya police airwing operates a number of helicopters including 3 russian Mi-17s, they can be given some of those. -There is no point of spending millions of dollars training 2000 elite recces, only for you not to be able to deploy them when the need arises. -And just so not look like the rich kid with all the nice toys but never plays with them, the mode of operations of the recces should be changed to operate like swat in the US, so that they can respond to any gun related incidence in an urban civilian populated area (that should keep them busy). -Currently the mode of operation follows a long chain of command, only the inspectore General can give the order for the guys to come out of there den. Kenya police air-wing Operates: 7 Cessna aircraft, the latest (2011) being a Cessna 208 Caravan light aircraft (United States) 3 Mil Mi-17 helicopters (Russia) 1 MBB Bo 105 air ambulance helicopter (Germany) 3 Bell-206 light helicopters[25] (United States) Just last month, Kenya police floated an international tender for 3 more helicopers including one troop carrier, this is in addition to 3 more helicopters to replace Mi-17s (which underwent refurbishment last year - dont know why they are replacing them) http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/article/2000155995/kenya-police-invite-bids-for-supply-of-three-helicopters pics-Kenya police airwing

MikeCZAR: wrong dude... because thee are alot of good things happening in Nigeria but we only hear of the Negative. that's being unfair. take for instance, chad and Niger only liberated about 3 border communities and are restricted along the borderi in Nigeria while Nigerian military cleared all territories from within in cluding gwoza (the fiercest), but you will keep hearing of how chad is leading the fight and Nigerian military don't want to fight. chad falsly liberates a town and it is big news. Nigeria liberates gwoza and no one wants to talk about it. please stop acting like you know stuff when you know nothing and don't try to speak for Nigeria. you are south african. we know where the shoe hurts. |
