UPN Against Deportation Of 70 Nigerians From Lagos State by Nobody: 8:49am On Aug 07, 2013 |
The Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, has said that the Lagos state government must rescind the eviction of over 70 indigenes of the South-East and South-South and provide transportation for readmitting them into the state. The party also said the Lagos State government must put together a compensation and rehabilitation plan for the affected persons. Lagos must rescind eviction of over 70 Igbos –UPN Speaking at a press conference through its National Chairman, Dr Fredrick Fasehun, the UPN said: “Rather than continue to defend the indefensible, Lagos State should bury its head in shame, seek the forgiveness of Governor Peter Obi and other Easterners and make conciliatory gestures. “Lagos State must apologise to the people of the South-East and the South- South for this chauvinistic act. Never again must such an action be taken in Nigeria against bonafide Nigerian citizens.” Fasehun said some of those who were evicted were apprehended for crossing, begging or hawking on busy highways, adding that, they were denied legal representation as they never had access to lawyers to defend them. His words: “The deportation not only violates all known international conventions and Human Rights charters, it assaults the ‘Right to Freedom of Movement’ as enshrined in Sections 41-42 of the Nigerian Constitution.” http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/lagos-must-rescind-eviction-of-over-70-igbos-upn/ 2 Likes |
