Fly-Over In Owerri, Imo State: Needed Infrastructure? by amakenny: 12:28pm On Aug 14, 2013
Gov. Ikedi Ohakim started the project of building road-junction fly-over in Owerri, the Imo state capital, to ease vehicular traffic. He never completed the project.

Gov. Okorocha tries to renew works on the fly-over but experts have recently come up heavily against the project.

Experts contend:
(1) enlargement of the roads at the junctions and canalizing the roads to directions of traffic flow can easily stop the hold-ups on the junctions; the traffic hold-ups are mostly of the rush-hour type.

(2) building large and canalized round about on the junctions could have eased off the traffic hold-ups.

(3) installing traffic lights on the junctions can easily make traffic hold-ups on them become a thing of the past; as obtains even in the mega cities of the world.

Many others contend: in a state where erosion are carrying vast acres of land, some times with property on them, away, what is the point spending billions of Naira on fly-over in the state; when simpler actions could be taken to ease traffic flow? The billions of Naira to be spent on fly-over can be used in checking erosion menace in the state, or even providing people of the state with pipe-borne water?

Environmentalists state that fly-over is only built where there is no other solution to ease traffic congestion in a road junction; that, at best, fly over is a mark of an unplanned city; that fly-over is obstructive and even makes a city ugly.

On the other hand, there are some Imolites who see fly-over as a sign that a city is of a gigantic or metropolis type. These set of people look at Lagos fly-over all over the place and they are convinced that fly over is a mark of development; they insist that fly-over also be built in Owerri.

Have your say.

If Rochas wants a flyover in Owerri, then it should be at the junction where Orlu road meets Control/Bank road.
2ndly, the Ohakim flyovers are nothing but disaster in the waiting. If Rochas wants to continue, then he should start from the scratch.

^^^Added to the above; he should use a reputable construction company, and not these local boys learning on the job as they go along!

Owerri needs at least 3 flyovers.......of the 'Akpabio' kind for avoidance of doubt!

Akpabio's type can't solve the junction I wrote about. Its the Upper Iweka type or Eleme junction type with 4 curves.

If you were among the Imolites who see fly over as a symbol of a city's development, you needed not react.

It is really unfortunate you have descended to the depths unfathomable sycophancy simply because of clueless Rochas Okorocha. If Owerre will have a beltway as envisaged by Okahim, it will have, at least, four mixing bowls. The capital city of Owerre has four trunk-A roads leading in/out of the city. They are Owerre/PH, Owerre/Onicha, Owerre/Aba and Owerre/Okigwe roads. The beltway is understood to have crossed these major roads. Owerre/Orlu junction could have a circle.

Rubbish! That thing Ohakim did there is so substandard and needs complete removal. Like I stated, the most vital place for a flyover of Eleme junction/Upper Iweka design is the Orlu/Control/Mbakwe roundabout. That part of Owerri is always gridlocked.

Above crap showed the same mindset as Rochas Okorocha who is neither an engineer of any sort nor a scholar.

Objective of this thread:

say what warrants building fly-over in any Owerri road junction.

Or,

say why there is no merit for fly-over in whatever road junction in Owerri.

No intimidation, no insult.

@DerideGull: Please explain, what "The capital city of Owerri" means.

Millions of jobs can be created in paving nigerian cities and towns. No matter the socalled developments niegerians governments embark on to beautify the cities as long as the pavements and surroundings are still unkept and dusty,it can never look sane.

Thank you for that observation. Are you aware that the poster "Deridedull" has been cursing Rochas administration for adding pavements and covering drainages in Owerri? They'll soon organize a protest against covering of drainages tagging it waste of resources.

Other question that needed to be asked is:

Gov.Okorocha-led administration embarked on too many road/drainage projects in the state capital and in other rural areas of the state - a lot of them yet to be completed and need a lot of money -

- must the present state government fully build the Ikedi Ohakim fly-overs in the state capital and abandon the road works it started; or complete the road projects and leave the fly-over projects for an incoming government in 2015?
