Baring any last minute hitch, a new political party will berth in the already charged Nigerian political turf this week.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed on Wednesday that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and some Governors of the crisis-ridden ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have applied for the registration of a group, Peoples Progressive Movement (PPM), as a political party.

The commission said it is processing the application.

Kayodu Idowu, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, disclosed this to our correspondent on phone.

Daily Independent reliably gathered that among the Governors who are promoting the new political association are Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State and Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State.

The five Governors have been in the vanguard of dissent within the mainstream PDP.

They have been moving round the country to “consult” with past leaders to “save the country’s nascent democracy.”

Beside the five, there are also indications that Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and Governor of Taraba may have decided to stake their political lot with the yet to be registered party.

Though it could not be confirmed at press time, the Speaker of the House of Representatives is also said to be sympathetic to the new group.

A former INEC National Commisioner, Mohammed Abubakar, a lawyer who is a close political ally of Atiku, filed the papers at INEC  on behalf of the group.

A source privy to the development told Daily Independent on Wednesday that INEC will meet this week to give the political  group the legal backing. “INEC will definitely meet this week. The party was supposed to be registered at the same time the All Progressives Congress (APC) was registered but for strategic reasons, it was withheld. But that should be done now since all hurdles have been cleared.”

It was also reliably gathered that Atiku may likely pursue his presidential ambition on the party’s platform when it comes on board.

The disagreement of the pro-Amaechi governors with the national leadership of the PDP came into the open on eve of the May 21, Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) election that led to the split in the Governors’ ranks.

One of the factions is led by Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State while the other is being championed by Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State.

The rumpus that followed the widely disputed election result has since escalated the crisis among the Governors, especially those belonging to the PDP.

It was learnt that the new political group petitioned INEC shortly after the registration of APC protesting their non-registration.

“INEC decided not to leak the petition to the media, preferring to sort things out behind the curtains,” our source revealed.

However, INEC chairman’s spokesman on Wednesday debunked insinuations that the commission refused to register the new group.

He also denied that INEC refused to respond to protest letters written by promoters of the political association.

According to Idowu, “There is an application from the group, and you know that there is a procedure for the registration of a political party; the commission is doing that in conformity with the Electoral Act.

“It is not true that the commission has not responded to their protest letter, we sent them a response that their application is being processed,” he added.

In a related development, recent registration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by INEC has also been described as a “blessing and the most convenient way of removing PDP in 2015.”

This was the position of the 11 APC Governors that met in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, on Wednesday.

After a three-hour closed-door meeting at the Presidential Lodge, Lafia, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, who spoke on behalf of the others, commended INEC for registering the APC.

He stressed that it is the only way to dislodge the PDP and entrench a virile democracy in the country.

He added that key decisions were taken at the end of the meeting, essentially about the concerns of Nigerians and the way forward.

Reading the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, Fayemi said strategies to compliment efforts of the interim national executives of APC to strengthen the party were discussed.

The forum also congratulated and expressed confidence in the interim national executives of the APC in their on-going efforts to reposition the party as a credible alternative to Nigerians that are yearning for change.

Apart from Fayemi, the meeting was also attended by Governors Umaru Tanko al-Makura (Nasarawa), Kashim Shettima (Borno), Rafiu Aregbesola (Osun), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo).

Others are Abdullazeez Yari (Zamfara), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Rochas Okorocha (Imo, represented by his deputy, Eze Madumere) and with apology from Ibrahim Geidam of Yobe State, who, they said, was in Mecca attending the lesser Hajj.

The APC governors also cautioned the National Assembly against legislating on any aspect of the local government administration in the country, saying that such an action will tilt the country towards a unitary state.

This move by Atiku would benefit GEJ by splitting the northern votes while he coasts home to victory.

At first they claimed they were saving Nigeria's democracy, now we know why.
But if this selfish ambition is achieved then GEJ would have a very easy ride to 2019 cos the new party ll divide northern votes with APC,
While halve of northern votes will still go to GEJ, in addition to block vote from SS, NE, MD, and half votes from SW. As for Ameachi this party will lost in his father's compound.
So thank you 5 governors and PPM.

The difference between APC and others is simple. When APC members are busy shouting, talking, bragging and jumping up and down like kindergartens, others are busy working underground.
See another twist from Atiku and co side.
This is the real spoiler for PDP and not the overrated, ego tripping APC

Good news indeed. This is a smooth chance for Gej's victory come 2015. Let them keep on dividing and dispersing but for me and my family, Fresh air till 2019. Now i know that Gej has no opponent

Its a game buddies, keep ur cards close to your chest. Very exciting drama, I'm enjoying it. My prediction; PPM aint anything of worth, merely a joker tossed by d PDP. It's a distraction for APC, destroys every hope of a major defection by aggrieved parties from PDP to APC.

This piece of information is wrong and unprofessional for INEC to disclosed at this stage. Conventional wisdom dictates that a degree of secrecy is maintained for consultations to continue till the new party is birthed, brandishing names of the supposed 'movers' of the new party at this stage is very unprofessional, and presenting same to the media like the former VP with the five governors personally approached INEC for the registration is wrong.

ojubi:
Beside the five, there are also indications that Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and Governor of Taraba may have decided to stake their political lot with the yet to be registered party.

Taraba State governor who is reportedly battling ill-health and currently incapacitated is also contemplating staking his lot with the yet to be registered party ?

The whole news reek of conjectures ...

How is the bold part above possible when all the governors involved in this move are currently with PDP? Abrakadaba Logic!
They will be splitting PDP votes than that of any other party.

I said it right from the beginning APC will lose massively in the forthcoming elections I am sure they will drop one state in the south west,if this news is true what it means is that 3 big parties will be slugging it out in the north and with these 5 northern govs APC should forget those states the remaining will be shared between PDP and the rest and definitely PDP will win a larger portion,in the south east with the recent development of fashola deporting ibos and the whole issue been blown out of proportion it will be a miracle if APC wins 2 states in that region.final verdict is that AC N simply played into the hands of PDP

The game plan is to make sure that apc doesn't win those states ,that means 6states are out of apc reach now if we consider what is happening in anambra

I don't know how this is not obvious to some. Well, it is Nigerians we are dealing with. A people who have gone on since the election of 2011 to firmly show the world they are political gauche and guided more by sentiments, superstition and worthless bias than rational thoughts.

If this news is true, and things move on to formal registration for the new Party consisting of so many PDP Governors, then it is only extremely damaging to the PDP and I don't have the energy or inclination to point out the obvious to those who will remain blind to even the most logical argument because of clannish myopia.

Thank God, Northern votes in 2015, getting more divided, GEJ till 2019.
Amaechi, Atiku and these Northern Governors forming this party have entered ONE CHANCE that is leading to their UNTIMELY POLITICAL DEMISE.
It is simple arithmetric, the Northerners are all willing to contest for the Presidency and none of them is willing to step down for each other, but Jonathan is the only Presidential candidate coming from the South, you don't need TB Joshua or Pastor Chris to tell you that the in 2015, the Northern votes will be badly shared among the selfish Northern Presidential candidates, While GEJ will win all the predominantly Christian Middle belt states in the North like Plaeteau, Benue, Taraba, Nassarawa,FCT, GEJ will clear the entire votes in South south and south east, ondo will go to GEJ, and expect Tinubu again to collect oil money trade some APC votes in the south west to GEJ like he has done in all the past 2 presidential elections.
Every day, the political dramas unfolding in Nigeria are all working in favour of GEJ political ambition, only those who understand the dynamics of political science will understand this.
The forming of this new party by this Northern elements and their cohort Amaechi will not affect any GEJ votes in the south south and south east and the middle belt, the votes in those regions are locked to GEJ, GEJ is not interested in the votes from the North West and North East where this Northern Governors and Atiku, came from, cos he won the presidency without most of those states last election.
GEJ and his strategists will not waste too much energy campaigning in the North East and North West because of the high rate of anti GEJ sentiment down there, votes there will be shared BY APC, and other political parties with Northern presidential candidates.

The secret STRATEGY & WEAPON of GEJ and his STRATEGISTS is DIVIDE & RULE
Hate it or love it;

A DIVIDED NORTH WILL NEVER SMELL THE PRESIDENCY IN NIGERIA!!!!!

If all these people mentioned evetually pitch their tents in the new party, then i can say this is the real opposition to PDP. APC is miles below these folks in terms of popularity, networking and resources. PDP should rather watch out for this party and not the sectional APC that has even crashed ever b4 it took off.
