Barely weeksafter President Goodluck
Jonathan’s official visit to China, the Chinese
Civil Engineering Construction Company,
CCECC, has mobilised to site to begin work on
an additional and modern terminal to Murtala
Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Government’s plan to build an additional
terminal to the airport is with a view to making
the airport a hub in West Africa, and it was part
of the agreement signed by President Jonathan
with his Chinese counterpart to build five ultra-
modern international airport terminals in Lagos,
Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt.
The development did not, however, come
without a kick from AIC Limited, which accused
the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN,
of conniving with the Chinese firm to take over
the land for its proposed hotel, describing same
as impunity.
General Manager, Corporate Communications of
FAAN, Mr. Yakubu Dati, said yesterday that the
Chinese firm had started preliminary work on
the project, beginning with soil tests, and site
mapping.
He said that the commencement of preliminary
work for the construction of ultra-modern
international airport terminal at the Lagos
Airport was a follow up to the project that
started in Enugu on May 18, 2013.
Dati, who noted that completion of the terminal
would help position the airport as a hub in West
Africa, said: “Work has commenced on the
project for the construction of a new
international terminal at the Murtala
Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, with
the mobilisation to site today, (yesterday), of the
project contractors, CCECC.
“Preliminary works on the project, including soil
tests and site mapping, were carried out as soon
as the contractors mobilised to site.
“The governments of Nigeria and China signed a
memorandum of understanding for the
construction of five ultra- modern international
terminals at the country’s major international
airports in Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Kano and Port
Harcourt , as part of the transformation agenda
in the aviation sector.
“The MMA project is the second of the five
projects that have started. The Enugu project
started first and its foundation laying ceremony
was performed by President Jonathan on May
18, 2013, the same day that the remodelled
terminal of Akanu Ibiam International Airport,
Enugu was also commissioned.”

this is nonsense, how can you build new terminal on the same runway.

You are going to build an international airport in akure to take away traffic from lagos. This is normal thing to do. why akure because it is more centre. that way only passagers in lagos will use the lagos airport. 3,000,000 is alot .. too much.

Akure is more centre because people from ado ekiti, akure , ife, ilesha, osogbo, lokoja, auchi etc. can use it. they dont have to come to lagos.

Don't know why this Chinese company doesn't like showing renders or 3D videos of their projects! They're 'mobilising to site' as the report says, yet we're still non the wiser as to how the building will look when finished......the one for Enugu that they're currently building; they've only released one pic!

And i hate that phrase 'soil testing'......in Nigeria that's code for faffing about and delay tactics!

CHINESE FIRM MOVES TO SITE FOR ADDITIONAL PH AIRPORT INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL

* INTER BAU EXPLAINS DELAY IN COMPLETION OF RE-MODELLING WORK

awodman:
Expansion of the initial infrastructure and the decision of
the Ministry of Aviation to upgrade the facilities have been
linked to delay in the completion of remodelling work at
the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers
State.

However, Inter Bau, the contractor handling the project,
said the international terminal of the airport was over 90
per cent completed while massive work was going on at
the domestic terminal and would take shape soon

Also, the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) has started work on the modern international terminal at the airport in accordance to the loan agreement signed between the Federal Government and the Chinese government, where Chinese Exim Bank offered a loan of $500 million for the construction of ultra-modern terminals at Nigeria’s four major airports- Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja and Kano.

On the level of work done at the Port Harcourt airport, the
architect in charge of the project, Chinagozim Amanze said since the construction work started, it had never stopped.

The architect explained that the scope of work was
expanded from the initial plan to renovate the airport to
total upgrade with the expansion of facilities, deployment
of modern equipment and architectural design.

“The first phase, which is the international terminal is
about 95 per cent completed because all facilities are in
place and they have been empowered. The mechanical
facilities are working. So the first phase is 95 per cent
completed. What is left is a few touch ups and clean ups.
Then on the second phase (domestic terminal) we are on
demolition work. The wet works are about 60 per cent
completed. We have done the roof slab up to the end. We
have done the columns to carry the rafters. The rafters are already on ground. On demolition work, we are about 80 per cent completed, we are carting away debris and what is left is an existing slab on the demolition work. So after demolition work by this week we hope to start the final wet work that is about 30 per cent left,” he said.

On the level of work being done, Amanze said, “This is
more than renovation. It is an upgrade. A facility that is on ground is being upgraded in terms of passenger capacity,in terms of capacity on ground. When we came in, we had to start our work and the few challenges we faced include the fact that the airport is operational while work is going on in it.”

The new features at the airport when completed would
include more capacity. While the old one had 700
passenger capacity, the new terminal will facilitate about
1500 passengers at the same time.
