Submission Of Yoruba/itsekiri Groups To The Committee On National Conference by Nobody: 10:23pm On Oct 21, 2013 |
We hereby present for posterity and for the attention of our longsuffering people, and for the attention of local and international community, the position of the Yoruba Self- Determination Groups under the auspices of theOodua Nationalist Coalition, (ONAC) presented at the Akure, Ondo State sittingof the National Conference Committee. 1. After a critical appraisal of the Nigerianstate, taking a deep, reflective overview of the history of her economic, political and social growth and taking into consideration the different phasesof Nigeria’s development since 1914 when the country was forcefully merged byforeign powers. 2. Noting that before the 1914 amalgamation, theYoruba peoples and our Itsekiri brothers have lived together as one people withone language, one culture and one history. 3. Aware of our rich past, tropical environment, the streams, forests and woodlands, the animals; and an amazing politicalstructure with its enviable system of governance and ordered society. 4. Aware that since 1914 Nigeria has been wobblingwithout peace but rather, a country ruled by fear, trepidations, anguish anduncertainties. That given the current situation of inequality, un-abatingviolence, carnage on our roads, disappearances of peoples, collapse of familyvalues, instability, bombings, kidnappings, unbridled corruption and wantondestruction of our God-given natural environment, the felling of our trees, thesuffocation of our plants and animals, of our beautiful birds, the occupationof our country homes by armed, hostile, malicious and murderous herdsmen, inspite of the laws of the land and helplessly folding our hands onlyto watch in tears and deep pains in our hearts. 5. That the political and economic structures putin place by the Hausa-Fulani since the Uthman Dan Fodio ruthless 1804 Jihad, inherited through the plot of foreign powers, has put the Yoruba people in constantjeopardy. That this skewed structure, in the form of the creation of states, local governments, making of the anti-people constitutions and the seizure ofour land, air and sea through despotic laws, made without the input of ourpeople, save selected cronies, have been strengthened by successive militaryregimes of Hausa-Fulani extraction and the civilian governments who are largelyoffshoots of the same repressive political structure. 6. That this past century, this system has made ourpeople to suffer horrendous murders, killings and now recently the bombing ofour worship places, the hate killings of our people through terrorist acts, inthe quest for political and economic domination and manipulation of Nigeria byforces alien to us. 7. That this attempt at constitutionalconference/dialogue we view with suspicion given the outcome of previousconferences of 1954, 1964, 1968, 1978, 1998 and 2005, yet it offers anotheropportunity for we the Yoruba people to present our deep feelings to theNigerian State, in spite of great doubts of the efficacy of the constitutionreview process, but with the hope, though faint, that our voices would be heardfor once. 8. That the classic argument that puts the economyat the centre of all human relations can no longer subsist, that there aretimeless values and cosmology that every nationality cherish and wish toprotect and build essence and existence around. 9. That the contradictions of Nigeria can beresolved through these suggestions which appear a peaceful model as against thecurrent resort to armed insurgence and mass killings of innocent people, on adaily basis, including women, children, vulnerable and physically challengedpeople. 10. On this basis, we the Yoruba Self-Determinationgroups therefore make the following recommendations to the NationalConference/Dialogue committee for the attainment of our peoples’ well-being(Yoruba and our Itsekiri kins) and harmony our territories. OUR POSITION That the present 36-state structure be abolishedand the structures and institutions of government devolve into the six regionalfederations. Each region is empowered to create states or counties as it sopleases. That the South West Region be made up of thefollowing, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara and the Yoruba speakingparts of Kogi, Edo and Itsekiri part of Delta state. That the Nigerian Police Force, (NPF) be abolishedand in its place should reflect the federal character of the country with athree tier system of small Federal, stronger Regional/ State and CommunityPolice structure. That South West Region should have control over herSea Ports, Air Ports, all natural resources on land, sea (offshore andonshore), including but not limited to oil and gas with 15% of net earnings tothe federal government for it to be able to discharge its duties to thefederation. That South West and other regions should have theirown regional constitutions including the hosting of diplomatic missions as itwas the case in the 1950s. That the South West should have control overRailways, Highways and all other mode of transportation in her territories. That the region should take charge of theexploration, generation and distribution of energy to meet its needs and requirements. That regional trade union should take the place ofthe present centralized Trade Unions and Professional bodies and Associations. There should be a regional army with contributionsfrom each of the regions to a federal army. The Federal Government shouldmaintain a small army while the regions should have the number of soldiers itso desire. That all the Itsekiri land and ancestralterritories in Delta and Edo States which have been taken at gun point must bereturned to Itsekiri and compensation paid. That Itsekiri and Ondo oil producing communities bepaid a compensation of 1billion dollars being the cost of the age long destructionof their farmland, the pollution of their air, and the innumerable deaths thathave occurred on these territories since oil exploration began. That any future consideration for state creationeither by the proposed Western Region or any other organ must have Itsekiri asa state. That the right to self-determination up to thepoint of secession, as entrenched in the constitutions of some other UN memberslike the United States, (US) and Ethiopia, should be entrenched in the Nigerian constitution. That representation to the conference should bedrawn from various ethnic nationalities in the country. That in order to save time and tax payers money, each geo- political zoneshould hold their own conference and come up with their resolutions which will then be brought to national conference for adoption. We submit that the recommendations of each regionbe subjected to referendum of ethnic groups living in each of the zones. We have made these submissions with the highest sense of responsibility for the peace and well-being of our people that arecurrently in the South West of Nigeria to the Senate of the Federal Republicthis day October 17, 2013 Signed: 1. bigass: I DON'T SUPPORT REGIONAL ARMYI think the way the army arrangement was posited in the submission above is better because if the army is totally centralised, the 'weak' centre might not be weak afterall as the army might become a tool of haunting a group or region or even become a tool of test of power by the centre. 1 Like |

All these igbo morons should not open their mouth. No be una one die wiv souht south because of oyel money! The statement was a collective statement. Do you think the yorubas would just come out and force itshekiri on themselves. They must have sat down and deliberated. So what's your stress. Mind u I am a full blooded itshekiri girl. So don't say what you don't no. Do u think itshekiris are like delta igbos or porthacourt igbos who will never want to merge wiv the so called original igbos. Forget town meeting, when d chips are down, u will no the truth. I don't see south-south igbos nor any tribe teaming up wiv the east! The fear of dormination by hook or by crook is real. Igbo is a major tribe in nigeria, your population is more than the south-south people as a whole. What do u thinking merging will cause for the smaller tribes like ijaw, uhrobo, okpe, kalabari etc they will be swallowed up by your tribe and will never have mouth again. They have nothing to gain if they merge wiv u. They are seeing what u guys are doing in lagos, all your boasting and effonterys, u think they are stupid! Do u think they would want to be swallowed up by a major Tribe, you people that still practise osu and ohu caste system, won't the igbos in the south-south almost be treated as such? Even on ndigbo page you people dscriminate against ebonyi people, no be wawa peeople una dey call them, so what would u call people of the south south, As at now u call them dilluted igbos. Who likes to be discriminated against? you think abandoned property was a joke. The hatred is still there! If the yorubas treated itshekiris as second class people, the reverse of what is happening btw them would have been the case! So my dears before u start ranting about itshekiri and yorubas, start thinking of how u can savage porthacourt and the igbo speaking parts of delta from south-south. Besides My best friends amaka and ifeyinwa from delta igbo, call them igbo and see their wrath. I don't understand how u would be bearing an igbo name and say you're not igbo. 15 Likes |

Mr, that one too dey! Everybody wants the better option. But if u know south-south well, u will no that there Is serious crisis brewing in that region. I personally would advse the igbos there to just follow the east. The people of the niger delta are not united o. Don't be decieved. If u hear what an uhrobo man would say about an ijaw man, the venom he spits will pierce through your skin. Infact south south can break into 4 or 3 other nations if care is not taken. As well as the east anambra can decide to be on their own because they believe they are the most superior igbos. The country breaking up is very complex. If only we were brave enough to cause a revolution and remain one. |

One thing about the southsouth is that there is no clear majority there.the yorubas are only interested in annexing itsekiri because of oil.itsekiris will only become servants if they join yoruba southwest.the ilorin yorubas know what awaits them if they join southwest which is the reason they prefer to remain in the north.meanwhile the southwest yoruba are not too eager about annexing ilorin because ilorin/kwara has no oil and they do not want to have conflict with the fulanis. sandijey: 1 Like |

The Edos separated themselves from Yorubas in 63 under that same sentiment fed by Ibos that Yoruba want their rubber. They lost their independence and MidWest to Ibo Biafra who invaded and annexed their land as Biafran soil. Today in 2013, rubber is dead; they are now subsumed into a SS zone from where their destiny is manipulated by non entities in the creek waters of Ijawland. Ibos are wishing on Itsekiri to go the same dead-end road they persuaded Edos and Urhobos to go in 63 - separate from Yoruba! We shall see....... 3 Likes |

The itsekiri population is enough to form a small country no one is annexing us we should remain in the south south have friends and forge our own destiny and stop whinning like a baby that needs to be pampered life is not a bed of roses. Vatican City - 0.2 square miles - The world's smallest state, the Vatican has a population of 770, none of whom are permanent residents. The tiny country which surrounds St. Peter's Basilica is the spiritual center for the world's Roman Catholics (over 1 billion strong). Also known as the Holy See, Vatican City is surrounded by Rome, Italy. MONACO- 0.7 square miles - The tiny state of Monaco lies along the French Riviera on the French Mediterranean coast near Nice. An impressive 32,000 people live in this state known for its Monte Carlo casinos and Princess Grace. It has been independent off-and-on since the 13th century. NAURU - 8.5 square miles - The 13,000 residents of the Pacific island Nauru rely on diminishing phosphate deposits. The state became independent in 1968 and was formerly known as Pleasant Island. TUVALU- 9 square miles - Tuvalu is composed of 9 coral San Marino - 24 square miles - Located on Mt. Titano in north central Italy, San Marino has 29,000 residents. The country claims to be the oldest state in Europe, having been founded in the fourth century. Liechtenstein - 62 square miles - This microstate of 34,000 is located on the Rhine River between Switzerland and Austria in the Alps. Marshall Islands - 70 square miles - The atolls (including the world's largest, Kwajalein), reefs, and 34 islands (population 58,000) gained independence in 1986; they were formerly part of the Trust Territory of Pacific Islands (and administered by the United States). Saint Kitts and Nevis - 104 square miles - This Caribbean country of 39,000 gained independence in 1983. Nevis is the smaller island of the two and is guaranteed the right to secede. Seychelles - 107 square miles - The 81,000 residents of this Indian Ocean island group have been independent of the United Kingdom since 1976. Maldives - 115 square miles - Only 200 of the 2000 Indian Ocean islands which make up this country are occupied by 340,000 residents. The islands gained independence from the U.K. in 1965. Malta - 122 square miles - This island is just south of the Italian island of Sicily. It became independent from the United Kingdom in 1964 and the British military were completely gone by 1979. The population is 400,000. Grenada - 133 square miles - This Caribbean country (population 90,000) became independent of the U.K. in 1974. It's located quite close to Venezuela. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines - 150 square miles - 117,000 people live on these Windward Caribbean islands which gained independence from Britain in 1979. Barbados - 166 square miles - About 280,000 people live on this Caribbean island, the farthest east of the Lesser Antilles. Barbados obtained independence from the U.K. in 1966. Antigua and Barbuda - 171 square miles - This Caribbean nation of 69,000 has been independent from the United Kingdom since 1981. The three islands which compose this country rely on tourism (as do many of the Caribbean countries and territories). Andorra - 180 square miles - The independent Principality of Andorra is co-governed by the President of France and the Spain's Bishop of Urgel. With just over 70,000 people, this mountainous tourist destination tucked in the Pyrenees between France and Spain has been independent since 1278. Palau - 191 square miles - Palau (also known as Belau) was a Trust Territory of Pacific Islands. It was formerly known as the Carolines and is composed of more than 200 islands in the Pacific; the population is about 20,000. It became independent in 1994. Who even told u ppl that D Edos and deltans are frm yoruba? Who? I knw of one history book written by one yoruba headmaster who as most of them normal mischief wrote that because of a marriage in one of the centries with yoruba king that Edos are frm yoruba. Whereas fortunately i read an almost torn history book earlier( i love stories, history and novels) that D Edos are even if nt related to D Isreal but traceably to D Eygptians and this history book was written around 1930 to 40 period or even lower as i saw frm D prelimenary pages and back edge of D history. But a yoruba headmaster historian who palgarise and skim that very book reconstructed it, doctored it in vital aspect to the detriment of this generation and to their mischevious gain and it was written around early 80s. it was few weeks ago in guys said itesikri had once said they came frm yoruba and suddenly today u have flew over Benin to them to claim terriotry, this act is D hieght of unabshad shame of lies! Soon they will say that all ethnic tribe of Edo are nt frm one man(such as Owan, Esan, Estako e.t.c) because of slight language differences. So is the case with uhrobo, istesikiri, isoko, even Ijaws must have spread frm Edos. The itesikri never had any relationship with Yorubas, they all had trade with D Edo monarch and paid tribute. And mind u, the succesive denasty of kings of Edo smhow have cuts, different kind of long line of rulers . If we had documented history even in hundred centuries we would have knw whos line has sat longer in D ruling of Edo. D present Oba came frm one line of a new king maybe called Obas(ovaremhei), this to show how long edo has come. There where other kind of kings, most did nt lose continious succession, nt becus of mutiny or overthrow but either childless or other historic events/natural occurences. All these happened b4 1500 of which Edo was already far, far establish and was even complaning or losing it hard grip as done or knw in D kingdom and history of Benin or Edos. The Edos are most frm Egypt and D yoruba must have come out frm them as they never stop any frm going to it own but must never revolt. Go and see D old history book 4 D truth. And Edo is D first place to be visted by white( portugese) in D whole of nigeria around 1500 century. U will agree that all these were due to it fame heard and held all far across Africa, which made D white to make effort to see such place. If u check D history of D white, they had alway gone to place of which they have heard exploit to see for civilization. Pls Edos are nt frm yoruba, one thing that brings them together was D power of ife oracle. And u knw sm ppl are good priest and others good diviners, so was ife. And most time D diviners do run away frm their origin to have space, peace to work their acts, this maybe D reason Ife became strong. How can u explain D spread of yoruba without a general king? it was due to D Edos rule over them. Many place never dared try unecessary military strenght, even 'eko'(lagos) is an edo word. Ondo and several yoruba state paid tribute and succesive danasty had different stretch of authority and rule over them(as cause by natural problem such as succesion, death, sickness e.t.c.) but never less than tribute paying. If u check D natural hausas, they are very very dark! So are most or sm yoruba, but Edos, Igbos, and even D fulani are nt as dark as such. No matter how black an Edo man is, he is nt as that dark as such D yoruba,or D real hausa. He is as light skinned as D fulani. Also D old military strength issue is another clear diffirence btw Edos and yorubas. 1 Like |

Edo is one of the oldest cultures in Nigeria, they should be the power house and cultural base for a SS.......they will get back their pride and glory, they dont need Yoruba to achieve that. 4 Likes |

chima12: Yorubas trying to attach themselves to itsekiri by force.keep fooling yourselves, itsekiri will always go with the southsouth.is it warri you yorubas want to annex?the ijaw parts of ondo will also reunite with their kit and kin in delta state.my guy, i couldnt believe wht i read. They even submitted D rubbish! There is a play done by D university of Ibadan how D itesikiri are under D rule of Edo kingdom. D Uhrobo, isoko, and many other tribes speak almost Ishan. But D way this thing was written, it hard emphasies on D itesikir who dont knw where they belong to. If they claim itsesikiri, where will uhrobo, isoko and other tribe with Edo name go to? Because D Itsekiri who D Edos booted their ass, whn they brought fishes, oil and other stuff 4 D Edo kingdom they must have been disatisfied and ran to D weak yoruba 4 help, so maybe frm there they claim relationship. D question is wht happen to D formal Bendel state? Were itsekiri nt among the D mishcevious are at it again, they want to distort history in few days. The truth is that GEJ is nt worth his position as obviously he is heading nowhere. Even to desoluting the Country, is tribe junked like the proposed one that will work? He should leave, his incompetence and lies is too much 4 me a southerner to bare. He cant even provide electricity, wht worth have u (GEJ) to decide the country? 1 Like |
