UNN-ASUU berates Wike for issuing sack threat

The University of Nigeria chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities on Friday said its members would not resume work on Monday unless their demands are met.

The UNN-ASUU also had harsh words for the Minister of Education, Dr. Nyesom Wike, for issuing the order directing lecturers to resume work on Monday or get sacked.

The union, however, told THE PUNCH that it wouldn’t react officially to Wike’s order until President Goodluck Jonathan speaks.

“We have not heard from the President, so we cannot speak officially on the matter. It would be senseless to begin to react to a statement from Wike since he is a tout.

“What we would simply say is that, we don’t have any business with touts like Wike whose children are studying in Ghana, yet they (people in government) cripple the education system in Nigeria,” said Dr. Ifeanyi Abada, Chairman of UNN-ASUU.

Abada said Wike’s order cannot hold and vowed that ASUU would unleash terror if the minister attempts to carry out the order.

FG is blowing hot air! They made a promise (as they did in 2009); let them show their sincerity in honoring the contract. ASUU will look like big fools if they are tricked twice with the same scam promise as was done in 2009.

If worse comes to worse, the lecturers will come to school, sign the bloody register and return to their air-conditioned office without lecturing. You can force a horse to the stream, but you can't force it to drink.

Universities should reopen please. There are other ways to resolve a problem.

The core problem according to Wike is that they are holding us to ransom. Good!

Now let us do a little problem solving. The core problem is these lecturers hold us to ransom. Why?

Possibly because the demand for University tutors far exceeds the supply as can be seen in the tutor student ratio of about 500 students to 1 tutor. Another problem, why?

Possibly because we have not been investing in bringing more tutors to reduce this gap.

Now let us turn these problems into solutions.

Solution, invest in research in these universities. Invest in new systems, facilities, equipments and tools to boost research in these universities. Develop strategies and seek new ways to continually improve these institutions.

Is this not what ASUU has been asking for? Can Wike not use ASUUs "wahala" to solve a problem?

Can the FG not have a plan to grow the number of PhDs in our universities by 30000 in the next 5 years? Can someone ask the tout Wike what plan he has to reduce the tutor-student ratio in our universities.

With an added advantage that these researches and researchers contribute to innovation and technical change in our country.

But they are not interested as they are not change agents. They are agents of theft, corruption and blackmail. They want the easy way of lies and deceit.

We need more number of Nyesom Wikes to confront this ASUU/APC gang-up against Nigerian students. Let him use the tactise he used on Chibuike Amaechi that made rivers house of assembly useless despite Amaechi's 27 loyal members on ASUU so that ASUU will go morribund and forever remain useless.

All ASUU wanted was the signature of an important person in govt. either the president or a minister. what did wike do ,on the day of the burial of iyayi , he spoke like a tout that he is ,a threat which is laughable.

And that is the main reason why we MUST dismantle ASUU and effectively prun it to the point utter uselessness. I mean no reasonable person will like to belong to ASUU by the time we are through with it. So in the Apc's own words you can "GO AND DIE"
