Sybella: :-D Sybellah my dear you are back lol. I'm sorry your country was put out in the open like that. I get this impression because I feel that Cote D'Ivoire places a huge emphasis on French over their local/regional languages. |

Re: Nigerians Have Very Low Self-esteem by Sybella: 3:26am On Dec 16, 2013 |
Fulaman198: How do you measure some “ countries’ africaness” only based on their official language? I am sincerely puzzled. Have you consider determinant factors that may lead a country to select such and such as their language: demography, cultural homogeneity and history for example. In Senegal for example Wolof people represents more than 40% of the population, they used to have an empire that reigned and dominated (for centuries) some surrounding ethnicities, with these ethnic groups having Wolof as their second language even before colonization. Using Wolof as the official language in Senegal was an easier transition I would say. Same could be said on Ghana (Ashanti empire) , Mali, Burkina (Mossi empire), Benin (Dahomey/Fon empire). Cote d’Ivoire was different as many ethnic groups started only interacted with each other during and after colonization. Before that, no groups’ influence was big enough to cover I ll say a ¼ of the territory. So why would a language that is not even understood by more than ¾ of the people be chosen as official? During colonization, french was used by Africans of different backgrounds to communicate with each others, so it made more sense to choose it as the official language. If you want to compare, pick up on countries that are more culturally diverse (Nigeria, Cameroun, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon…) although their official language na be western, this does in no way make them “western wannabees”. Majority of people from these countries use western language for administrative purposes but speak their own languages with their relatives and others. Last but not least, Abidjan does not represent the whole “Cote d’Ivoire”. Many people from Abidjan speak French (90% + possibly, this doesn’t mean that they don’t understand their own) but that does not apply to the remaining cities. Dioula( Taboussikan) and Baoule remain the most widely spoken languages in the whole country. |

MamiWata: So now Ouattara the puppet is the Representative of all the people? Do you know how many ivorians despise him for this matter? I don't believe so...Before him, how many CIV presidents had a french wife/first lady? lol I don't think you have any idea about what you are talking about. |
Re: Nigerians Have Very Low Self-esteem by Fulaman198(m): 5:48am On Dec 16, 2013 |
Sybella: My dear I am aware, and I am sorry if I have offended you. I am just trying to highlight possible countries that would like to adopt European culture and policies over their own. Many Nigerians despise their own culture and would rather be Westernised. I guess I can't speak on behalf of Cote D'Ivoire. Did you get my message btw? |

I feel like doing another... History lesson 2: original thought & incorporation of foreign ideas V.S flagrant copying Soon after the dispersal of Africans from the Sahara several original knowledge & production systems occurred... Further on in time trade relations brought the knowledge of the wider world in contact. Now did they straight copy from everyone else or did they use the knowledge of the world to extend there own knowledge systems Looks to me as though they took the ideas gained through trade and used them to expand on and apply their own unique cultural conceptions there by bringing something new to the world. Though I quess it's hard to ask someone to expand on what they have when they hate/feel ashamed of it themself... . . . . . Or hey you could just give it over to Europeans and let them update your traditions for you if your to ashamed to do it your self. (Traditional homes sold to Europeans then renovated/"modernized" *introducing new ideas to old designs...you know what was done before*) . . . Though be careful not to let your self be eaten up by other cultures ...likewise don't voluntarily "sacrifice" yourself to other cultures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIVXDbULzGY 1 Like |

Sybella: Sorry but your protests do not change the first words I wrote though you chose to focus on the last. I said:Honestly EVERY Ivorian I've met or known all the way from the top. Out of 4 Ivorians I distinctly remember asking what their native language is because three proudly responded French. One meekly responded Mandingo. I remember one who studied philosophy and gushed nonstop about Foucault (sp) but had no interest in even investigating indigenous philosophy. That is the image I have of Ivorians. Nope...never met one who reflected any sense of pride in being African.Of course the folks I know may not be indicative of Ivorians. Perhaps they're just a bunch of francophile outliers! 1 Like |

RandomAfricanAm: I feel like doing another... Mali was a great region, with mosque of Djenne that you illustrated here and other great monuments. But the Malians are proud and don't try to be European. Nigerians are a different case from Mali even though we are not too far away from them. I don't know why they are more traditional than we are. Timbuktu is one of the greatest cities and regions of all time not only in west Africa, but the world. |
Re: Nigerians Have Very Low Self-esteem by RandomAfricanAm: 12:29am On Dec 17, 2013 |
Yeah the point I realy hope got across was that though all those regions were exposed to a lot of the same ideas(because of similar trade contacts) but they didn't just copy other peoples societies they used the ideas from those other societies to expand on there own. This is what African people need to realize. There is this weird idea among a lot of people that the choice is between... 1. Staying exactly the same (which I have no issue with provided it's not enmass to the point where we can't defend ourself militarily, socialy, & economicly) or 2. Completely trashing everything and copying another people. That's simply a false choice and it saddens me that people don't see that (though without a clear historical memory how could they?) 2 Likes |

"We told the white missionary that we had such fables too, but kept them for the entertainment of those yet growing up -- fables of gods and devils and a supreme being above everything. We told him we knew soft minds needed such illusions, but that when any mind grew among us into adulthood it grew beyond these fables and came to understand that there is indeed a great force in the world a force spiritual and able to shape the physical universe but that that force is not something that is cut off not something separate from ourselves." @fulaman have you ever read "Two Thousand Seasons" |

Random question, kinda related to the copying notion above and maybe better suited to another thread but... How do we come through the other end of "this"(colonialism/slavery/neo-colonialism/IMF & world bank/World Wars/militarism/Massive ecological pollution) without turning into the type of people who perpetrated that kind of non-sense? Now I have no problems busting heads when the time comes but I have no desire to turn into "that"/"them" or bequeath that type of heritage/society/Africa down to future generations. I don't have any kids of my own but that's besides the point in the larger scheme of things. |

SPEAKING ENGLISH DOESN'T SHOW INTELLECT ....LOOK AT CHINESE,RUSSIANS AND EVEN INDIANS THEY DON'T GIVE A FUCKKS ABOUT THESE WESTERN CULTURE ...This is the one thing I disagree with. I follow enough Indian/Chinese news to know that the self hate is pretty damn rampant throughout most places that were occupied/colonized (I notice a lot of people are under the weird Idea that Africa is the only place that got hit ) General rule: The Americas were the epicenter it gets less severe the farther east you go with Japan takeing the least heavy hit. 1. American natives were occupied, colonized, lost two continents, and millions of people 2. Africans were occupied, colonized, and lost millions of people 3. India was occupied and colonized 4. China was occupied 5. Japan simply traded (at this point the whole thing imploded under it's own weight like most European endeavors/societies ...Find it odd the self haters ignore that) |
Re: Nigerians Have Very Low Self-esteem by Fulaman198(m): 9:59am On Dec 20, 2013 |
RandomAfricanAm: You don't get it, it's not to the same extent at all. How many Chinese and Indians have pure English names? China's official language isn't English. Russia and China could care less about English. Nigerians want to sound like Brits and Americans when they speak. India hasn't even come close to abandoning their culture like Nigerians. Heck, in the North we even copy Indians with their music and auto tune it. Niger and Mali don't do that. Nigeria has really bad low self-esteem. One of the worst in the world. |
Re: Nigerians Have Very Low Self-esteem by RandomAfricanAm: 11:10am On Dec 20, 2013 |
Oh I get it ...and I agree with pretty much everything you just said. Not only that but my previous post gives support to that notion . My point of contention is the idea that India and China are unaffected by being occupied and or colonized and that they... DON'T GIVE A FUCKKS ABOUT THESE WESTERN CULTURE It's an issue in their society but as I said before the further away from the epicenter you are the less severe it is. I.E it's an issue there but because it wasn't hit as hard and long it's worse in nigeria. A good example of were it's worse would be to look at the epicenter The Americas or even Australia were the natives are in a depressed drunken stupor. You have Native Americans who refuse to even claim there heritage and claim there "Spanish" or "latino". All those so called "latinos" from northern Mexico the U.S constantly go on and on about are basically native people who were pushed south at the end of the Mexican American war who are now coming back because U.S corps wanted cheap labor(not to mention the chaos caused by the parasitic NAFTA trade agreement and drug war violence) Why is it so bad for them? Because they are at the epicenter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e6ChgL1EC4 . . . I agree, I'm just taking the extra step and putting it into context. It's happened to lots of people the difference is to what degree. |

Also, the point isn't to marginalize or dismiss the observation my point is to agree and show the vector of attack and point out common symptoms around the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGd6qtMco7Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GdNnBCaocI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADw7erT7-GU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRp6seV9pYs . . . . This S**T is crazy and seeing how it affects other people shows that media(movies, TV, internet, etc) is another vector of attack that is reinforced by the past of colonialism |
