all of you saying 4100 are bloody cheats...

take 1000 and add 40 to it means you are given a value of 1000 for a start. it in no way means -1000 you wannabe mathematicians how do you solve word problems?

my answer is 5100

CristyBEN: The trick there is that the 3rd 1000 ws only mentioned and not ask to be added, therefore the answer is 4100

ADD 20, then ANOTHER 1000

let's take you to the kitchen where you can relate....ADD pepper, then salt.

Lol.Dude dnt get me wrng,d answa is 5100.If u assumed d initial is 0,basically ur sayin ur usin integer cuz d lower limit of an integer is 0 nd upper limit is +infinity.-1000 is real, wit lower limit -infinity nd upper limit +infinity,so if its a real number,u cnt jux assume its 0(I do get d fact dat ur tryin 2 disapprove d oda guy by dat logic bt its also knd of wrng) .So u cnt add -1000 to 40,-real + integer,it won't work.Dnt wana prolong,if ur a mathematician,u'd understand.
P.s,I'm a mathematician and computer scientist.
you or your teachers need to be flogged..... Have you heard of negative integers? Or that integers are a subset of real numbers?......... It might be wrong to add real numbers and integers in your programming without parsing, but in maths it is perfectly legal......................

Then for the second group of olodos that assume take 1000 means take from 0, why don't you all assume you initially had 1,000000 instead of zero?..............

Anyways just give the damned question to your brothers or sisters in nursery or primary school

I jst asked my younger brother who came 2nd at d F.C.T cowbell maths competition & he says its 5100.
Accordin to him, this basic maths concept is more of a practical application dan a theoritical one, so d idea of "take" bein referred 2 as "take away" doesnt come into play(thereby introducin d -ve sign)..

For me-every riddle has a practical application, so d idea of goin into detailed theoritical maths concept as against realistic obtainability is uncalled for- i go with my bro- #5100

he's actually not being sarcastic. . ..he's adding up two different set of figures . . . . . .
Take 1000 and add 40 to it.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 30.

he's assuming this is one set

Another 1000.
Now add 20.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 10.
And then add 1000

and this is the second set

his reasoning being that he wasn't asked to add the third 1000 to the previous figures

Wow! This is an entirely new dimension to it. Now sheet's cray!

I actually didn't add that 'Another 1000' and arrived at 4100. But this seems more valid than mine.

Re: Maths Riddle by haibe(m): 7:43am On Dec 19, 2013
Akpangbon: You are adding 1000 four times --> 4000
Then you are adding 40+30+20+10 --> 100

Answer:
4,100

Reason?
Associative and commutative rules of addition

1000+40=1040
1040+1000=2040
2040+30=2070
2070+1000=3070
3070+20=3090
3090+1000=4090
4090+10=4100

I bet you didn't see the last "add 1000" or you think its the same with those ones on Facebook?
Re: Maths Riddle by viexcey(f): 7:43am On Dec 19, 2013
The correct answer is 5100
But if u say we have to take away 1000,the answer is still not 4100,it will be;

0 - 1000 = -1000 + 40 = -960
-960 + 1000 = 40 + 30 = 70
70 + 1000 = 1070 + 20 = 1090
1090 + 1000 = 2090 + 10 = 2100
~ 2100 + 1000 = 3100

femolala1: with my mathematical knowledge, i think op is wrong. In mathematics, when you take any figure then you have a negative i.e. -1000. therefore, we have -1000+40+30+20+10+1000+1000+1000+1000=3100

did you see, take 1000 and add 40 to it"

Solve this first and get back to me, also take is very different from take away.

Integers are supersets of real numbers. Integers span from -infinity to +infinity while real numbers are from 0 to +infinity.
I concur to every other thing you said.

you nailed it bro, if take means " take away from', then anyone can assume an initial figure.

My explanation:
Take 1000 results in -1000 since we were not asked to take 1000 from 1000.

'Another 1000?' what shud i do with it?
Standing answer =100, then add the last two 1000....final answer = 2100....#datsMyOwnAnswer

You know the word another denotes something of the same type or a similar action?

I can see english is some people's problem and not the math itself, little wonder why people fail English more than mathematics.

The answer is 5100 logically but from the fact that nothing existed and there is no number bank to draw from, the real answer is 0 grin grin

yea bro, a very big possibility too considering that it was called a mathematical puzzle, I think even the op sef didn't observe this. From afar, its 5100, bt lookning at the question critically, u see y its called a mathematical puzzle.
