The problem with school enrollment-education in Kano state and ofcourse the core north has a lot to do with a STRONG ideological rejection of formal education by a deeply conservative islamic society. It has got little to do with the price of education. If the passion is there, northern peasants can afford to send their wards to school even at the present cost. For somebody who has taught in the north for years, this fact is very glaring when you have a well furnished school biult by PTF positioned side by side with a Quaranic school. While the Quaranic school is a beehive on daily basis,, you will struggle to see a filled classroom in the nearby formal school, even if all academic provisions including books, pen, desks, uniforms are provided FREE by the then PTF (Buhari worked wonders in the north during ths period). The obvious fact that the average northerner has been culturally conditioned to accept a certain type of education as godly and the other worldly is very easy note. . . So While this is a good development from a very 'progressive' minded Kwankwaso, there is an urgent need for a radical attitudinal change amongst northerners if the course of quality education for the majority of the citizens can be furthered. I dont think that government functionaries can be trusted alone with this task. The emirs, the imams and the sarikis have to come together to formulate a common plan to sensitize their bourgeoning quantity of illiterates that it is high time the stunning numbers of out of school kids in the north is reduced. Ordinary people in the north tend to listen more to these traditional\religeous leaders than they do to 'formal' government officials whose utterances seem to appeal more to the elite and their offsprings- a class up north who seem to enjoy the status quo for the dominating capablities it enhances. It might also be helpfull to calibrate the curriculum of the Quaranic schools in a way that basic subjects taught in formal schools can also be incorporated. That way folks can be skilled optimally in non religeous affairs without much commottion and rejections that will come with a direct government intervention. 8 Likes |

talk is cheap, the government shouldnt just start it,it should be maintained. If it will help in making the people realize the importance of being civilized, and elightened, and curb babaric behaviour, then its a big welcome development. |

It is stupid to make tertiary education free. Tertiary education is too expensive for govt to bear the cost alone. This will automatically affect quality. ASUU strike only ended few days ago and part of the demand is more money from the FG for both state and federal universities. The irony of this stupid action by the state govt is that when the govt decides to sponsor select students for higher education, none will be sent to this school that is offering "free" education. The governor will send them to either private schools in other parts of the country or schools abroad. So why not send them to the state govt schools where "free" tertiary education is offered? The reason is simply. These schools are not good enough. So what is the solution if they'r not good enough? Make them good enough. Re-Structure them to be like those schools that are good enough. Simple! And free tertiary education can NEVER part of that restructuring. In fact, it will make those schools worse. Only basic education should be made free. Govt can afford that 3 Likes |
