Dahomey Amazon: What happened to putting up a sign that says do not use your phone at check points. Imagine Nigerians giving these fools an excuse to threat them like animals. Is that how other militaries behave?
the only sensible comment so far.

As someone with some knowledge of explosives forensics, I can authoritatively tell you that one of the ways that IEDs are detonated is by the use of mobile or cordless phones.

IEDs are of two types: simple and complex. Mobile phone detonated IEDs are classified as a type of complex IEDs, requiring simple modification of the phone to an electrical firing circuit to initiate the explosive charge. Most people do not know that answering a phone initiates a spark mechanism within the device, which is why people are asked not to use mobile phones in filling stations so that the spark mechanism does not ignite any fuel being dispensed.

IEDs detonated with mobile phones caused a lot of casualties in Iraq, and many soldiers have been killed at checkpoints because of this. When approaching a military checkpoint, commonsense dictates that you stop any activity that is likely to arouse suspicion, especially given the already charged state of our armed forces towards civilians. The driver ought to have cautioned the female passenger in question.

Sorry for your ordeal, but soldiers are also taught these things about explosives and so they will act on the side of caution than just let it pass.
Then the order should be switch off your phones at checkpoints. Honestly I don't think slapping and molesting people can prevent a terrorist detonating an IED with a cellphone. He can dial it without holding it up to his ear... For instance.
It is perfectly more sensible to do an IED sweep and prevent IEDs from being planted, than preventing one already deployed from being detonated.
Soldiers who couldn't even protect their wives and children in their barracks.

Yeah that.
But seriously cellphones are less than a tip of the security challenges iceberg. There is no cellular network in bornu yet these devils are able to coordinate massive attacks.
The army response shouldn't be on civilians. They should take the fight to Cameroon or wherever the devils are hiding.

Always try to be diplomatic and tactful when making comments.

When did you become a judge of sensible comments?

Be a lady if you are actually one and say "IN MY PERSONAL OPINION".

In my opinion, you could come across as cautious , bold and sensible.

Its generally not allowed to make calls near military check points in Nigeria sha o or walk on the same lane with their post. I guess it has to be for their security.

What do you mean by outside the country? Please stop deceiving yourself.

This is obtainable in any troubled zone. I report from war torn areas, just returned to Chad after a two week assignment in South Sudan. And from what I hear from other international war correspondents and journalists, the grass ain't always greener over there.

Thanks.

Magic Bishop:

Heard of Mercury switch IEDs?

The detonating mechanism occurs when the IED is moved which triggers the mercury to flow and connect a circuit switch. This is known as a tilt switch.

The Iraqis used this after cell phones were being jammed by the U.S. forces.

Fun stuff!

Of course I have. There are several trigger mechanisms around. Even a clothes peg can serve as a trigger. We were taught explosive forensics in my PG class by one of the world's leading experts. Won't say more.

Using cell phones at military check points became offence the day they realise cell phones have cameras that can be used to record their criminal activities like extortion and molestation of civilians. It is the only explanation while all other explanations are excuses to justify the ban.

I believe some of these folks join the army to be able to brutalize so called bloody civilians, I remember many yrs ago when I was a young boy of about 12 or 13 and I was walking home one early evening, and these two zombies accused me of walking in front of a captains house, that it's a military zone in an estate that was meant for Ondo state civil servants, so I should start frog jumping lol. Some of them have these oversized ego when they are wearing that uniform, most Nigerian security officers wheter soldiers or police are nothing but jokers, but I cant blame them the average Nigerian is a case study in cowardliness.
