President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said irrespective of the challenges Nigerians might have faced, the country remained a truly blessed one, whose diversity remained its source of strength.

Jonathan said this in his New Year message to the nation made available by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati.

He added that the Federal Government would fight corruption more  in 2014.

He said, “Our administration believes that the cost of governance in the country is still too high and must be further reduced. We will also take additional steps to stem the tide of corruption and leakages.

“We have worked hard to curb fraud in the administration of the pension system and the implementation of the petroleum subsidy scheme. We have introduced a Pensions Transition Arrangement Department under a new Director-General. This department will now ensure that those of our pensioners still under the old scheme receive their pensions and gratuities, and are not subjected to fraud.

“Prosecution of all those involved in robbing our retired people will continue. The Petroleum Subsidy Scheme is also now being operated under new strict guidelines to tackle previous leakages in the scheme and prevent fraud.

“Foreign travel by government personnel will be further curtailed. This directive shall apply to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government. Our strategy to curb leakages will increasingly rely on introducing the right technologies such as biometrics and digitising government payments.”

He added, “Whatever challenges we may have faced, whatever storms we may have confronted and survived, Nigeria remains a truly blessed country, a country of gifted men and women who continue to distinguish themselves in all spheres of life, a country whose diversity remains a source of strength,” he said.

The President observed that 2014 would be a momentous one for the country for several reasons, including the fact that the nation would celebrate its 100 years of existence in the New Year.

He recalled that the British colonial authorities amalgamated the separate Protectorates of Southern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria on January 1, 1914 to give birth to Nigeria.

“Year 2014, to Nigerians, is not just the beginning of a new year, but the end of a century of national existence and the beginning of another,” he said.

This, he said, was a moment for sober reflection and for pride in all that was great about Nigeria.

While reiterating his position that the nation’s amalgamation was not a mistake, the President said as they celebrate the 100 years of its nationhood, Nigerians must resolve to continue to work together as one united people.

He assured Nigerians that his administration remained committed to the development of the country and the consolidation of peace, unity and democratic governance.

He added that despite several domestic and global challenges in 2013, Nigeria witnessed many positive developments which his administration would strive to build upon in 2014.

The President admitted that the cost of governance in the country was still too high and must be further reduced.

He also promised to take additional steps to stem the tide of corruption and leakages.

Jonathan added that foreign travel by government personnel would be further curtailed and that the directive would apply to all ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government.

The President also reeled out statistics on the strides he said his administration achieved in the agriculture, health, education, water and housing sectors among others and promised to do more in the New Year.

Below are President Jonathan’s 2012 fuel subsidy Speech. This is the second time he is promising to reducing travel costs. What happened with the first promise?

“12. To save Nigeria, we must all be prepared to make sacrifices. On the

part of Government, we are taking several measures aimed at cutting the

size and cost of governance, including on-going and continuous effort to reduce the size of our recurrent expenditure and increase capital spending.
In this regard, I have directed that overseas travels by all political office holders, including the President, should be reduced to the barest minimum. The size of delegations on foreign trips will also be drastically reduced; only trips that are absolutely necessary will be

approved.”

Buying the 11th aircraft of the presidential fleet in the 2014 budget does not seem like a sacrifice to me. I have to ask, who is really running Nigeria?

Yes Jonathan will fight yahoo yahoo boys, when they have successfully rendered EFCC powerless. The only corruption EFCC can fight now is against Yahoo yahoo boys so as to get busy.

Opposition beware, he is going to fight the way OBJ fought corruption by attacking opponents in the name of fighting corruption.

To fully fight corruption in Nigeria, start by reducing the #1b/year food budget. We don't want to have to rent tow trucks to pry your fatazz wife from aso rock come 2015. Leave with your dignity at least.

Jonathan carries his fhoolishness into 2014 and he must think Nigerians are as retar.ded as himself to believe this hogwash. The only thing you should care about now is packing your load back to your small Otuekwe creek village and drink your oyel. The dead man retardeen that has not done anything for 3 years and more suddenly wakes up to promise heaven on earth? EFCC is having less than 2 M as at the past few months and they will fight corruption on your behalf or they will not be so broke, they just need the money first. Same for Police. Same for the corrupt ministers like BMW Odulah, fat face, huge lips thieving Iweala, big eyed corruption personified Maduekwe and the shepopotamus building N 1 B hotel whereas she's never earned 5 M legitimate income all her life? All that remains is for your dolts to pack your load back to your villages now!

This is the FULL Transcript of the New year Message of Mr President, away from possible distortions of 'over-zealots' Merchants-of-Information.
ENJOY:

The president also reeled out some of his achievements in 2013.

President Goodluck Jonathan has pledged to build on the achievements recorded by his administration in 2013 to make Nigeria even greater.

The President said in his New Year message to Nigerians that despite several continuing domestic and global challenges, the year 2013 witnessed many positive developments, which the country must strive to build on in 2014.

Reviewing the various achievements, the President said his administration diligently implemented its agenda for national transformation in priority areas, including power, rehabilitation and expansion of national infrastructure, agricultural development, education and employment generation.

In spite of the estimated 1.6 million new jobs he said were created in the country in 2013 as a result of his government’s policies and actions, the President said more jobs are still needed to support the country’s growing population
.

“Our economic priorities will be stability and equitable growth, building on the diverse sectors of our economy,” the President said.

In 2013, he said government commenced the implementation of the National Industrial Revolution Plan, NIRP, aimed at industrializing Nigeria and diversifying the economy into sectors such as agro-processing, light manufacturing, and petrochemicals.

In addition, he said Nigeria also successfully negotiated a strong Common External Tariff, CET, agreement with the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, partners on the need to protect the country’s strategic industries from foreign domination.

As a result of his administration’s backward integration policies, Mr. Jonathan said Nigeria moved from being a net importer to a net exporter of cement, with its production capacity growing from just 2 million metric tonnes in 2002 to about 28.5 million metric tonnes today.

“For the first time in our history, we have Foreign direct investment into Nigeria has also been strong. In fact, for the second year running, the UN Conference on Trade and Development, UNCTAD, has named Nigeria as the No.1 destination for investments in Africa,” he said.

He noted the revolution in the agricultural sector, saying his administration successfully tackled corruption in the input distribution system during the year, as farmers now obtain their fertilizers and seeds directly through an e-wallet system.

About 4.2 million farmers, he said, received subsidized inputs through the programme in 2013; a scheme, he said, has restored dignity to our farmers.

Apart from the production of over 8 million metric tonnes of additional food during the year, the President said his administration was able to bring inflation down to its lowest level since 2008 partly due to higher domestic food production.

The country’s food import bill, he said, was reduced from N1.1 trillion in 2011, to N648 billion in 2012, pointing out that this has now placed Nigeria firmly on the path to food self-sufficiency.

On achievements in other sectors of the economy, the President said between 2007 and 2013, allocation for education almost tripled from N224 billion to N634 billion, apart from additional efforts towards improved access to education in the country.

These included the construction of 125 Almajiri schools, and the establishment of three additional Federal Universities in the North, bringing to 12, the number of universities established by the present administration.

Also, about 352 laboratories were rehabilitated, while 72 new libraries were constructed in the Federal Unity Schools and laboratories rehabilitated in all the 51 Federal and State polytechnics across the country
.

Mr. Jonathan also assured that his administration would continue to prioritize investments in key sectors such as infrastructure development, power, roads, rail transportation and aviation.

Apart from the completion of the privatization of four power generation companies and 10 power distribution companies, Mr. Jonathan said government was also in the process of privatizing 10 power plants under the National Integrated Power Projects, NIPP.

To ensure effective evacuation and distribution of power generated, he said an additional $1.5 billion was advanced for the upgrade of the transmission network to boost electricity delivery to beyond 18 hours per day
.

To cut down on public expenditure and wastage, the president said foreign travels by government personnel in all ministries, departments and agencies would be curtailed.

He said government would complete the deployment of the three electronic platforms- namely, the Treasury Single Account, TSA; the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System, GIFMIS; and the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS- to curb leakages in the system

We have introduced a Pensions Transition Arrangement Department under a new Director-General. This department will now ensure that those of our pensioners still under the old scheme receive their pensions and gratuities, and are not subjected to fraud.

Jonathan under fire for nominating “corrupt” ex-Gov. Muazu as PENCOM boss

Mu’azu was accused of looting N19.8 billion from state coffers

The Transition Monitoring Group has kicked against President Goodluck Jonathan’s nomination of Adamu Mu’azu, former Bauchi State Governor, as the Chairman of the Nigerian Pension Commission, PENCOM.

The group accused the president of appointing a candidate who was still under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for corruption.

Last week Wednesday, President Jonathan forwarded Mr. Mu’azu’s name – alongside Mfon Akpan as Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service – to the Senate for confirmation.

So, Oponuchukwu Abdul l Retardeen is fighting corruption by appointing a looter under efcc instigation to head the pension commission while the previous pension looter is still walking around free and not in jail.

I though this useless dullard just promised to stop talking rubbish?

Btw, why wait till 2014 to get tough on corruption? Why not now? Why not yesterday..

What a dumbass..

He should start by selling off all the presidential fleet save 3. I don't think senate presidents and house speakers have official jets in other countries too.
I'm sure enough people won't mind him to adopt them as aso rock pet with 15million naira budget. What's the purpose of the animals, to protect him or to cater to his fancy both of which doesn't make sense. If he even want elephant as pet, that's his business, he should buy it with his money and cater for it not at the expense of the national coffers.
