President Goodluck Jonathan has agreed to
appoint a Surgeon-General of the Federation
as demanded by the Nigeria Medical
Association (NMA), a competent source in the
Presidency, has said.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, made the
disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) on Thursday in Abuja, that Jonathan
gave this concession after a meeting he
summoned to avert the NMA Jan. 6 planned
industrial action.
The source said the person to be appointed to
occupy the position would be a medical
doctor.
It will be recalled that one of the demands of
the NMA is that the Federal Government
should appoint a medical doctor as Surgeon-
General of the Federation.
The source also said the president had agreed
that the call duty allowance of the doctors
running into billions of naira be paid.
The source said that following the demand of
the association, the appointee would be
responsible for public health.
“The government has taken a decision to
appoint a Surgeon-General of the Federation
who will be a medical doctor and will be
responsible for public health.
“That appointment will be announced soon,’’
the source said.
The source said Jonathan had directed the
Ministry of Health to collaborate with
Ministries of Finance, Trade and Investment in
consulting with medical practitioners to
supporting private investors to build state-of-
the-art hospitals in the country.
The decisions, the source explained, were
aimed at promoting local potential, improving
fiscal policy on medical equipment and
checking the growth of medical tourism.
The source said Jonathan also directed that
before any government official would be
allowed to travel abroad for medicals,
government must first be satisfied that no
such medical services exist in country.
According to the source, the president has also
agreed to reform the National Health Insurance
Scheme to make it more productive.
The source said the president had also
consented to the demand of NMA to make its
representation to the Nigeria Institute of Policy
and Strategic Studies, Kuru.
The closed door meeting which was the fourth
since December 2013 was attended by Gov.
Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Ministers of
Health and Labour, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu,
and Chukwuemeka Wogu.
The meeting held at the presidential Villa was
also attended by the Director-General of
Budget Office, Dr Bright Okogu; and the
Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes
and Wages Commission, Chief Richard Egbule.
It will be recalled that the government had
earlier met another demand by the NMA by re-
constituting the Medical and Dental Council of
Nigeria.
In an interview with State House
correspondents after the meeting Uduaghan
had said that the president conceded some
demands by NMA to avert the strike.
Uduaghan, who did not reveal the concessions,
said that the nation could not afford another
strike in the medical sector.
The governor, who is a medical doctor, said
the government team would later meet with
the NMA on the new development. (NAN)

It pisses me like none other when Doctors dont let other health professioners progress in their career.
And this happens in Nigeria alone.

seems its only two states which have doctors as governors, rather a small number out of 36 or so states imo.

and given the fact that the nigerian healthcare system is in serious need of improvement.

some people must learn to undstnd tht doctors and pharmacist/nurses are not the same, though health workers doctors are meant to be the head of the medical team.

Pharmacist and nurses pls take note!

Misplaced priority ..... This is what we get when vision less pple are in power! Is it the surgeon general that will fix the dilapidated medical facilities dat we have in our shambo public hospitals? Or d duties of d surgeon general will still cut across treating of our old parents in villages dat don't have good health care centre? Only God will save us in dis country.

way to go ! This is what our health system needs.there is an attorney general, accountant general, surveyor general e.t.c ...a surgeon general will solely cater to the needs of doctors.it frees us the position of 'health minister' so any of the other health workers can attain it since they want kill themselves over it.

It is a step in the right direction. Fixing hospitals is good but the general misconception abounding in Nigeria is that you need advanced state-of-the-art hospitals and equipment to achieve better health indices; to reduce maternal mortality and infant mortality and raise life expectancy of Nigerians. Not so.

More than 90% of the health problems of Nigeria can be solved by strengthening Primary Care. A case in point is Cuba versus the United States. Cuba spends per capita about $168 on health compared to the United States which spends more than $4500 per capita, and it is widely acknowledged that Cuba has one of the best healthcare systems in the worls, outranking the United States on nearly all health indices. They were able to achieve this by ensuring universal health coverage, and doing things like universal access to clean drinking water etc. These sort of initiatives fall within the purview of Public Health.

There is no coherent Public Health direction or policy in Nigeria. The appointment of a Surgeon-General goes a long way towards ensuring that by providing leadership and direction for Public Health in Nigeria.

It will be foolish on the part of NMA not to demand that agreement reached should be written down, signed and better still publish.
These fools can later deny.
NMA, u have been advised.

Cater for the needs of the doctors? What's NMA for? What's MDCN for? Les see how it plays out. I'm only expecting the reaction of the pharmacists and nurses. The movie is still long ooo.
Are u tryna say this office is the reason for the continual unnecessary lordship of doctors over the health sector? Adongerrit!

Moreover, u'd like to explain how the surgeon-general office benefits Nigerians.

It seems it's a move by the Drs to checkmate d demands by the Joint Health Union (JOHETSU) for control and greater representation at health care boards breaking d age old tradition of Doctors bin d head of every medical institution.
The Surgeon-General overseeing d public health system effectively negates that possibility..i.m.o

Only a doctor can be cmd of a hospital, only a doctor can be minister of health, doctor is DG of NAFDAC. It was just last November a pharmacist was appointed into one of the boards in the ministry of health after much said. It was all a doctor thing.
