Ogun Community Protests Herdsmen’s Killing Of 4 Kinsmen by chino11(m): 6:57am On Jan 08, 2014
ABEOKUTA — Hundreds of people of Ketu constituency in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, yesterday, protested over alleged killing of four of their kinsmen by Fulani herdsmen.

The protesters, under the aegis of the coalition of socio-cultural groups, are of the opinion that “the state is sitting on a keg of gun powder due to government’s failure to decisively address the unabated killing going on in Ketu Constituency.

“We are helpless, hence our appeal to Governor Ibikunle Amosun.”

The protesters, who are members of Ketu Advancement Front, KAF; Ketu Alliance, KA and Peoples Assembly, PA, called on the governor to speedily constitute implementation committee as contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 among the Ketu people, the state government and Fulani herdsmen in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the groups, the spokesperson, Ranti Ogunsola, said: “We recall that while the MoU was being signed on December 17, 2013, the herdsmen were on killing expedition in Ketu.

“We drew government’s attention to this and requested the herdsmen’s exit before signing the document to allow for the control of their arms but government felt otherwise.

“We reluctantly signed the document hoping that the implementation committee jointly agreed upon would be empowered to work quickly.

“Since October 2013, majority of the people have abandoned their farms with the hope that government would intervene decisively to create conducive atmosphere required for them to go back to the farms where they earn their living.

“We regret to note that since the signing of the MoU government has gone to sleep over the issue while the herdsmen continue to kill and maim our people.”

Their statement was signed by Messrs Ranti Ogunsola for KA, Kunle Abiose for KAF and Lasisi Jelili for PA.

According to the statement, “On December 17, 2013, four Ketu people were shot by the herdsmen. Of the four, one Alade Eyo died on the spot while one Bondu Oladeyo died the following day.

“This was beside the five-year-old Ajimoh Adisa who was gruesomely murdered in her father’s farm on December 2, 2013.

“On December 6, 2014, one Fasola Simon was hacked down and shot dead on his farm.

“We are taken aback that the government is still foot dragging on the implementation of the MoU despite our reporting all these incidents to appropriate quarters.

“We can further recall that between 2000 and 2012, 23 people were sent to their early grave by the herdsmen in gruesome manners. The waiting is becoming endless with hunger ravaging our land.”

Across Southern Nigeria, it's only in Yorubaland that these Fulanis have been dealt with mercilessly

The Ogun State Government had tried to come up with a peaceful means of resolving conflicts between the farmers and the herdsmen

However, it seems these herdsmen will not learn

They had better be guided by what happened to their kinsmen in Oyo and Kwara

By now they should know that only flatheaded farmers are the ones that flee and have never in their history stood up to any attack by the Fulanis. Never in their history

I think in their interest, they should desist from further attacks or the people may resort to defending themselves

You should not worry about what Yoruba can do. Newsspread when Fulani kill our people because that is also part of their propaganda to put fear in every ethnic group in Nigeria. After killing then they call cops and report and its how it gets out in news. We dont call anybody when we kill them. We dont need anyone to know matter of fact. If it wasnt Emir of Ilorin running mouth the other day no one in Nigeria would have known what we did to them in Ilorin. 100s of them were killed in Osun between October and November last year. Nobody knew this because we did not report it. You would think they will report it, no because they dont call when they loose, they dont want anyone knowing their shame. They only call to alert media and police when they kill and escape the scene.

This situation is under investigation. You will not get an update unless somebody out there run their mouth again and let the cat out of the bag.

Yorubaland will be their graves, there is no 77 virgins to collect here.

These were the ones reported by alarmists. There is no cause for alarm. Yoruba blood is sacred, Fulani must perish!

The day i created thread on spate of Hausas/fulani in Owerri, here are some nairaland response
torkaka: How time flies and how things change, growing up as children we were never aware of our cultural, political and social differences. To us everyone was the same regardless of whether he/she was ibo, hausa, jukun, tiv or yoruba. Being muslim or christian was of no importance and our teachers in primary school made no effort whatsoever to enlighten our consciousness on how different we were/are. Then we grew up and turned to teenagers and influences from those before us became more defined, we started being aware of certain things around us, our eyes opened to our socio-political surroundings, ibo's as we were meant to believe were traders who will do anything to get a good bargain, money was all they thought about and they will do anything to get it even if it means killing a man. Hausa's(there was nothing like hausa/fulani then) were uneducated people divided into two, muslim alhaji's with a lot of wealth who controlled the country and dirty beggers who roamed the streets. Yoruba's as we believed were dirty noise making cowards stinking of tribalism. Fulani's we associated with cattle and nunu, they were also thought to be honest and straight forward. These opinions were formed not based on our interactions, but on merely what was passed on to us by those who themselves had little information and knew absolutely nothing about those they were stereotyping. We are aware now, technology has opened our eyes and as events keep unfolding, we now know better. Political and social tribalism has not been and was never the ideology of the yoruba's, it has been and was always the child of the ibo's nurtured by perceived marginalisation and the losing of a war. This has always been the card, as the "they don't like us" and "we are victims" theories have been passed from generation to generation. Suspicion and the sense of injustice has fuelled the spirit of political tribalism, mediocracy is put on the front burner as double speak is the order of the day. Looking back, one has come to realise that our socio-political conciousness was not just awoken by stereotyping from our hosueholds but by our intereactions with peoples of different ethnic/tribal backgrounds, with the ibos who used every opportunity to remind us of how they are better, how they are marginalised politically and how if the country had divided, they would have prospered. This raised the ethnic/tribal fire in the rest of us as we were constantly reminded of the solidarity of the ibos....................Excerpts from an unfinished book (Author's permission taken)
________________
Ddaji: @ op my sincere advise to you is to deport those Hausas back to their state.Have you ever been to out of ibo land.in sokoto the present councillor of rijiya ward is an ibo man,the Special adviser to the governor on non resident community is an ibo man and your people are enjoying free education in the state like indigenes.Ibos Kidnapped and collected N5o million from the family of late Abu Dankure(an associate of the Gov),just on saturday they kidnapped and release a state house of assmbly member. There is no village or harmet, that you will not find an ibo in the state. To be honest with you they threat to us.Crime rate like arm robbery is high in the state due to the large presence of ibos in the state.pls.let the deportation begins,I promise you it will be a blessing for us.I belief you are a lion in the cage

Even Afam
Afam4eva: Both of you are obviously ignorant because you don't know the difference between Hausa and Fulani. even the people the OP saw may not even be Hausa. Even if it's Fulani people, so they should be stopped from moving freely just because other fulanis are soiling their name?
_____________
Theben: When they unleash mayhem, the government should take the blame for not providing adequate security. Not all Hausas are Boko Haramists and not all are violent. The Hausas did not react to the influx of the igbos into their land with statements like "they are criminals, they are kidnappers". Whoever commits a crime should be prosecuted. The individual should take the blame and not the tribe.
_________________
donphilopus: I love the comments I'm seeing! If you check the number of Igbos in other part of the country, the OP won't spew this trash! They used to say, anywhere you go, and you do not see an Igbo man and Egbira man there, better run from there.

Hausa, Yoruba clash in Lagos over murdered youth

March 20, 2012 by Kunle Falayi

Agiliti, Mile 12, Lagos, erupted in violence that lasted for hours on Monday as some Hausa youths clashed with their Yoruba counterparts.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the clash, which started around 7am, began when some Hausa youths allegedly attempted to dump the corpse of a man they had reportedly slaughtered in the Maidan River.

A man, who declined to give his name, told our correspondent that, “This morning, we were not far from the river when we saw the Hausa youths trying to dump a corpse in the river. We immediately accosted them and demanded to know where they got it from and what happened to the man. The youths told us he was caught during a robbery.

“The body showed that the man had been brutally beaten. It was noticed that he had been slaughtered too. So, we asked them why they killed him and why did they not hand him over to the police if he was a robber.

“Before we know it, the whole area had been roused and we had been overwhelmed by the Hausa youths. We had to leave the scene after some scuffle.”

The youth told our correspondent that the Hausa residents who stayed behind later burnt all motorcycles in sight.

When our correspondent got to the scene, a large crowd of youths, who were speaking Hausa, were seen destroying shops and kiosks on three streets in the area.

A police helicopter hovered in the sky, while nine police patrol vehicles and a Rapid Response Squad’s Armoured Personnel Carrier were stationed at the scene, but this did not deter the youth from destroying shops.

Three streets; Nuhu Oluwo, Oniyanrin and Adeyeye, were completely taken over by the Hausa youth who wielded clubs, pipes and machetes and other weapons while they ransacked every shop on the streets.

Some of them broke into a shop, pulled down the door and carried away two air conditioners they found inside.

Some of the youth also attempt to pull down the roof of the shops.

Our correspondent noticed that they had earlier broken into other shops on the streets. Other youths were seen grabbing loafs of bread in a shop they had broken into.

However, some older Hausa men were seen appealing to the youth to stop the violence.

A youth who brought out an amulet and wore it on his arm, was told to pocket it, while another man, Alhaji Gambo Limani, slapped a youth who broke a bottle on the ground and wielded it as a weapon.

When our correspondent later spoke to Limani, he said, “I had to caution them because most of these youths are hoodlums. They would blow the problem beyond proportion.

“I really don’t know the basis for this whole crisis because I just got back from Sokoto this morning. My main concern is to ensure they don’t cause crisis in this area.”

When our correspondent asked Limani about the whereabouts of the Sarkin Hausa (head of the Hausa community) of the area, he said the Sarkin had travelled.

Our correspondent reports that Oniyarin Street was completely deserted and the majority of the residents locked themselves up in their residences.

When asked why the area was deserted, a youth said, “These people (Hausa men) are many in this area. They inhabit most of the houses here. Anybody who has his life to protect should not attempt to go close to that area.”

Our correspondent watched from a safe distance as the rampaging youths smashed the windscreen of a bus in the presence of the policemen who made no effort to stop them.

The youths spoke in Hausa, occasionally pointing their sticks at the policemen to dare them.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in the state, Mr. Tunde Sobulo, later came to the scene and dispersed the youth. He addressed the policemen and gave them directives on how to man the area.

When our correspondent attempted to speak with him, he simply said, “This is operation. I don’t have any comment to make now.”

But the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said the police were being cautious because the clash was between two ethnic groups.

Jayeoba said, “The police got a report early this morning about a corpse of a man that was allegedly killed in Oniyanrin area of Mile 12. Policemen were quickly drafted to the area to remove the corpse. The clash was due to perenial accusations between the Yoruba and Hausa residents.

“In any case, the DCP operations and the area commander have been there to restore peace. The area commander has also invited the heads of the two ethnic groups in the area and all other stakeholders to resolve the issue. Right now the area is calm.”
