Dark horses enter the fray

While matchday two of the FIFA U-20 World Cup may not involve too many of the tournament's big hitters, the eight contenders in action are all keen to upset the odds.

The likes Portugal, Colombia and Senegal - continental runners-up - will be far from easy opponents for anyone in New Zealand, while perennial CONCACAF U-20 champions Mexico will also be out to flex their muscles. Surprise Asian champions Qatar will hope to continue their impressive form, with Uruguay - finalists in 2013 - Serbia and Mali unlikely to prove pushovers on an intriguing day of action.

Match of the day
Portugal-Senegal, Hamilton, 31 May 2015, 16:00 local time

This Hamilton encounter will provide an early opportunity for both sides to prove their mettle, as while both arrive Down Under as the second-best teams in their continent, they also have some question marks looming over their U-20 title aspirations.

While Portugal stormed through the UEFA U-19 Championship group stage, led by the likes of Rony Lopes and Andre Silva, they failed to score a single goal in the semis or final. Senegal, meanwhile, needed a miraculous Sidy Sarr brace in the closing minutes against Congo to book their place in New Zealand. However, Nigeria were the only side to beat them in the tournament, so both will be keen to erase any of the doubts attached to their chances.

The other matches
Despite riding into the tournament on the back of their first ever Asian U-19 title, few will be expecting Qatar to dominate in the same fashion on the global stage. They will certainly be viewed as underdogs against South American silver medalists Colombia. A win for the Gulf nation would see plenty sit up and take notice, while Los Cafeteros will be keen to improve on their last-16 showing of two years ago.

Mali meanwile burned brightly initially in qualification, but faded once out of the group stage to qualify fourth in Africa. Replicating the first part of that equation will be coach Fanyeri Diarra's priority, but U-20 World Cup regulars Mexico will be keen to get rolling quickly. An early defeat could pose serious problems for progress in what looks likely to be a tight group.

Uruguay and Serbia will be equally aware of the situation. Both sides will present a significant challenge for the other, too. Uruguay came within a whisker of triumphing in South America, while Serbia were unbeaten in qualifying, heading out against Portugal on penalties. A tight encounter is therefore expected in a chilly Dunedin.

Player to watch
Dictating play from midfield during Qatar's triumphant run in Asia, captain Ahmad Moein was named player of the tournament after impressing throughout. He makes up one part of Felix Sanchez's quartet from Belgian side KAS Eupen, and how he tackles the world stage will be key in dictating how far they go.

The stat
13 – The number of CONCACAF U-20 titles Mexico have to their name. Yet they have never won the U-20 World Cup. The last time they reached the final was at the first edition in 1977, with 2011 the only other edition in which they reached the last four.

The words
“We’re feeling relaxed and we’ll take it one game at a time, with our feet firmly on the ground. Our first objective is to get past the group phase.”
Gaston Pereiro, Uruguay midfielder

Match schedule
Group C
Qatar-Colombia (Hamilton, Waikato Stadium, 13:00)
Portugal-Senegal (Hamilton, Waikato Stadium, 16:00)

Group D
Mexico-Mali (Dunedin, Otago Stadium, 13:00)
Uruguay-Serbia (Dunedin, Otago Stadium, 16:00)

Sidy Sarr, Senegal's humble hero

Some images are worth a thousand words. For example, the sight of the usually shy Sidy Sarr celebrating vigorously after his last-minute winner gave Senegal a 4-3 victory over Congo DR at the CAF African U-20 Championship on 14 March.

After sliding home a left-footed finish, the Lion Cubs midfielder ripped off his shirt and sprinted towards the home fans at Dakar's Leopold Sedar Senghor stadium, while the crowd erupted with joy. Reliving this moment in conversation with FIFA.com almost three months on was enough to coax Sarr out of his shell again: "It was a goal that we needed, plain and simple," he said, smiling.

This is no exaggeration. The hosts had been trailing 3-2 as late as the 88th minute until their No8 equalised with a powerful right-footed strike. Three minutes later up popped Sarr once again, this time with his other boot, to clinch Senegal's maiden win at the tournament and book their place at their first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Nevertheless, the young dynamo was unwilling to take all the credit: "I scored the goals, but it was a team effort," he remarked, highlighting that all the players had their "hearts set" on making history for their country.

The starlet's modesty is commendable, but there is no doubt that he was Senegal's key man throughout the event. Besides the aforementioned brace, he scored in their 3-1 loss to Nigeria in their opening game, provided two assists and was hugely influential in their all-round play.

Not for nothing was he handed the armband by coach Joseph Koto after that dramatic Congo DR encounter and subsequently named in the CAF team of the tournament. "These sorts of things are a pleasure. I'm really proud," replied this massive admirer of Yaya Toure when asked about this recognition, albeit not without a touch of embarrassment.

From Mbour to New Zealand
It is fair to say that few people were prepared for Sarr's explosion onto the scene. On the books at minnows Mbour Petite Cote, whom he joined in 2015 from no less modest Senegalese second-division outfit Dakar Sacre Coeur, he does not fit the mould of your typical national saviour. On top of this, he is younger than many of his team-mates (he will celebrate his 19th birthday during the group stage) and less experienced than the squad's Europe-based contingent, which is headed by Dijon's Mouhameth Sane, Monaco's Seydou Sy and Zaragoza's Alassane Sow.

And yet it was this shrinking violet off the pitch who rose to the occasion on it to lead his side to the promised land. Just do not ask him to describe this land in detail: "I don't know anything about New Zealand. All I know is that it's far away," he joked.

One figure who did, however, see the midfielder's emergence coming was Ibrahima Wadji, Sarr's team-mate and 'big brother' at club and international level. "I'm thrilled for Sidy, he thoroughly deserves it," the winger raved to the local media following his protégé's heroics on home soil. Fittingly, Wadji kept Sarr company in the team of the tournament too, having also netted three times.

The Mbour Petite Cote president, Mbaye Diouf Dia, is pleased to see the two youngsters flying the flag, even though the club is flirting dangerously with relegation. "It's true that the team's quality won't be the same as when they were around, but good for them," he stated, before adding: "Above all we are hoping for Senegalese football to make a big impression in this competition."

Sarr's response when FIFA.com put this to him was characteristically laconic: "We'll do our best." We have every reason to take him at his word.

Record crowd watch hosts hold Ukraine

Hosts New Zealand have kicked off the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup by drawing 0-0 with Ukraine in front of a packed North Harbour Stadium. The lack of goals in this Auckland encounter wasn't for the want of chances, but a lack of composure too often proved the undoing of both sides.

The Junior All Whites certainly couldn't have asked for any greater backing, with a sell-out crowd of 25,000 cramming in to set a new record attendance for a FIFA match in New Zealand. There was precious little for the Kiwi fans to cheer in the first half though as Ukraine dominated, creating the better of what few chances there were.

Artem Biesiedin was among the Europeans' danger men and he twice came close, first forcing Oli Sail into a smart save before leading a speedy breakaway that ended with a disappointingly wayward shot. New Zealand did have one, glorious opportunity of their own though, when Matthew Ridenton headed over from close range after Sam Brotherton had risen highest to meet a Kiwi corner.

The game became more open in the second period and the hosts should have taken the lead inside a couple of minutes. Clayton Lewis was the guilty party on this occasion, leaning back at the crucial moment to shoot over after breaking through on to an incisive pass from Alex Rufer.

Ukraine were wasteful too, with both Eduard Sobol and Mykyta Tatarkov failing to even test Sail after being teed up in excellent positions. And they had their keeper, Bohdan Sarnavskyi, to thank for emerging with a point after he dived to make a crucial save from Noah Billingsley's late sliding effort. The Kiwis, who finished strongly, also missed a glorious late opportunity when Sam Brotherton headed inexplicably wide from inside the six-yard box.

New Zealand will now take on USA, again in Auckland, in their second match, while Ukraine go up against tournament debutants Myanmar.
