Nigeria vs Senegal: In numbers

The stage is set for the final game of the U20 2015 Africa Youth Championship in Dakar, Senegal as the hosts take on Nigeria in what promises to be an entertaining clash.

Nigeria came tops in Group A of the competition, beating Senegal 3-1 in the first group game and then navigated it’s way past Congo before drawing 2-2 with Ivory Coast to set up a semi-final clash with Ghana.

Two goals in each half, a fantastic header by Obinna Nwobodo off a corner kick and a Musa Muhammed penalty ensured passage to the final of the biennial tournament.

Senegal’s passage wasn’t as smooth as Nigeria’s. After losing to Nigeria, Senegal played out a 2-2 draw with Ivory Coast before needing an injury time winner in the 4-3 win over Congo to book a place in the semi-finals.

The Young Teranga Lions beat the odds by defeating favourites Mali 2-1 in a fierce semi-final to set up a date with Nigeria.

Ugbade: Flying Eagles to handle the pressure

Flying Eagles assistant coach Nduka Ugbade has assured his team will cope with the pressure hosts Senegal will throw at them in Sunday’s AYC final.

Two weeks ago, Nigeria beat their counterparts from Senegal 3-1 and both teams have now set up a rematch after they worked their way to the championship game.

“It’s a very, very good advantage that we won the first match 3-1 because that will force Senegal to come out on Sunday and try and win this match,” said Ugbade.

“It’s now a different situation from when we first met, but all the same it will be difficult for both teams.

“The tactics for this game will be altered a little so as to suit what we have to deliver.

“Notwithstanding our win over them, they are a very, very strong team who have improved with the tournament. They are strong, big and tall and they are a lot more matured in the way they play, while we are a very young team.”

Unlike the opening day clash when there were only a couple of thousands of fans at the 45,000-capacity Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium in Dakar, the imposing arena will be filled with spectators rooting for the home team to win Senegal their first-ever continental trophy.

“Yes, the stadium will be filled to capacity and the crowd will be on their side. But football will be on our side and we will handle the pressure, very, very well,” said the former Nigeria international defender.

“We will feel the pressure for the first time and we will have to be psychologically strong so that no matter the crowd, we will play our game, play simple and unique.

“We are up against an entire country, the crowd at the stadium and 11 players who will be representing Senegal. It will be interesting.”

This awoniyi case is getting on my nerves. They should not ruin the young man's career. Olofinjana should know better.

Ezeh was injured, makes perfect sense. I did not think he was that bad.

Flying Eagles come first insists Awoniyi

Taiwo Awoniyi has said he is not troubled he has not scored in the Flying Eagles last two matches at the AYC, insisting that the team come first ahead of any personal glory.

Awoniyi has three goals from his team’s first two matches against Senegal, where he fired a brace, and Congo. But he has since become a marked man and has fired blanks against Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.

However, the striker, whose target was to score in every match of the 2015 AYC, said the priority remains a seventh AYC crown for the Flying Eagles today at the expense of hosts Senegal.

“It is not a problem (that he has not scored in the last two matches). We all wish to score for our team but sometimes it does not happen. I always want to score for my team to win and like all strikers it would be great to be top scorer in a competition,” he said.

“But we are a team first and foremost and not individual players.”

He continued: “We want to win this cup.

“And the important thing is that if I got a chance, I should convert it for my team to win.”

The lanky striker, who has enjoyed comparisons with the legendary Rashidi Yekini, is in the reckoning for the top scorer award as well as the AYC MVP after he scooped two Man of the Match Awards.

The 17-year-old centre-forward has also reportedly interested several top European clubs after his displays in the last two weeks in Senegal.

Awoniyi has certainly taken his chances after being in the shadows of Isaac Success at the 2013 CAF U17 Championship in Morocco and then Kelechi Iheanacho at the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Awoniyi, Musa warned not to be selfish

Super Eagles coordinator Patrick Pascal has advised Flying Eagles stars Taiwo Awoniyi and captain Musa Mohammed not to be eager to win the AYC top scorer award when they face Senegal in today’s final.

Skipper Musa Mohammed leads the top scorers’ chart with four goals, while Taiwo Awoniyi has three goals.

The former Nigeria international told AfricanFootball.com that both players should play for the team and think of the team's success first.

"Awoniyi and Mohammed should not be selfish because they want to win the top scorers award, they should play for the team's success, think about the team first and any other thing can follow,” Pascal said.

“To be crowned an African champion is better than any other honour at the competition."

Flying Eagles Will Win But It Won’t Be Easy Says Ezeh

Flying Eagles forward Chidera Ezeh has predicted a difficult African Youth Championship final against Senegal on Sunday, but he would still back Nigeria to carry the day.

“It’s an important game for us, it won’t be as easy as the first game between the two teams (which Nigeria won 3-1), but we will still carry the day,” said the 17-year-old FC Porto youngster.

“Senegal will be very strong, but we will also be ready because we have taken each game we have played here like a cup final.”

The 45,000-capacity Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium in Dakar is expected to on Sunday record its biggest crowd since the championship began two weeks ago.

However, Ezeh maintained the most important actors on the day will be the players themselves.

“It won’t be the crowd who will play this game, it will be the players who will decide the champions,” he offered.

Skipper Musa Muhammed, who spoke on behalf of the players, said they are galvanized to win the AYC for the seventh time on Sunday.

NFF VP: FLYING EAGLES PRIDE OF NIGERIA

Vice-president of the Nigeria Football Federation
(NFF), Seyi Akinwunmi, has described the Flying
Eagles as “pride of Nigeria”, while assuring all the country’s teams of full support.
The Flying Eagles are only a game away from a
seventh African Youth Championship.
And Akinwunmi paid a glowing tribute to the
Nigeria U20s when he addressed them in Dakar
on Sunday morning.
“You are the pride of the nation and if you can
avoid unnecessary mistakes, no team in Africa
can beat you,” he said.
“The new board of the NFF are not perfect in any
way, but we want to do things properly. We
therefore assure all the national teams the
necessary support to succeed.”
He also touched on the value of representing
Nigeria.
“Representing any of the national teams goes
beyond match bonuses. There is a value to
representing Nigeria, there are far bigger benefits
playing for your country than getting bonuses.
And that’s the mentality we want to build,” he
explained.

Nigeria claim 7th U20 title

A jaw-dropping moment of quality from Bernard Bulbwa settled a fiercely-contested 2015 Africa U20 football championship final between Nigeria and Senegal on Sunday as the Flying Eagles claimed their 7th under-20 title with a 1-0 victory.

The hosts started the brighter of the two sides and almost got the first goal on six minutes but Joshua Enaholo’s great reflexes denied Malick Niang after a flowing Senegalese move.

Senegal were all over Nigeria in the opening moments of the game and almost scored the opener in the 12th minute but Enaholo was outstanding again, this time denying Niang a sure goal with an unconventional stop with his feet from point blank range.

Three minutes later, the hosts came close again through El Malick Niang whose header just flew off target.

The home fans were bouncing in the stands as the Young Teranga Lions looked to exact revenge on the Flying Eagles following their 1-3 defeat to the Nigerians in the opening game of the competition.

On 19 minutes, Bernard Bulbwa silenced the home support with a goal worthy of winning any game.

The forward took a long pass with the outside of his right foot before hitting an unstoppable volley beyond the reach of a shell-shocked Senegalese goalkeeper.

The two sides traded excellent opportunities all throughout the game but the Flying Eagles held out for a famous win.

Nigeria will now compete in Group E of the 2015 Fifa under-20 World Cup alongside Brazil, North Korea and Hungary.

The World Cup begins in New Zealand on May 30 and runs till June 20.

MY TAKE ON OUR PERFORMANCE AT THE AFRICAN YOUTH TOURNAMENT 2015

I can boldly say that Manu Garba is an excellent tactician. From the beginning of the competition, I had maintained that the fields were terrible. The ball kept bouncing awkwardly and passes were not being completed due to the bumpy nature of the pitch. Manu adapted to the situation and insisted on long balls to a striker who could hold the ball well and do his fair share of bullying defenders to commit themselves. This was unlike the slick 'tip-tap' passing game we witnessed at the Super 6 tournament. To me, what this shows is that Manu Garba knows exactly what he is doing. He is not rigid. He knows methods that are suited to particular instances and goes with them accordingly. I'm delighted that we have a coach who has moved up the ranks and knows his onions. From being an assistant to Yemi Tella to getting to three major finals in three tournaments and winning two, he is poised to becoming the Super Eagles' Coach in a not-too-distant future.

The boys did great. I was glad when I saw Bulbwa in the starting line-up. And what a match-winning goal he scored. Part of me wanted the goal to be the only goal scored in that final so that it could attract the commendation it deserves. Excellent technique! He's always being a delightful player. Remember that he was the one that benched Iheanacho before eventually being dropped from the squad after the MRI tests. Magic moments like he displayed make the difference between an average team and a team destined for glory.

I personally think Ifeanyi Matthew should be called up to the Super Eagles NOW. The lad is a baller. Excellent passing and more. He is made to be a midfield general and throughout the tournament he has shown that he is the one that made that midfield tick.

I am so sure Nwobodo would have done much for the team but for the crushing tackle by the Senegalese. I am glad that though limping, he was able to walk to the podium to pick up his medal. I wish him speedy recovery and can't wait to see him show the Samba boys that the future champions of the world at the senior level are here. Save for his first game which I think was because he was not used to the terrain, he was class in all the minutes he's donned the Flying Eagles jersey.

Muhammed Musa has shown what a leader he is and I'm happy that he picked up the golden ball with his four goals in the tournament. Take a look at his aggressive free-kicks and tell me we do not have our own specialist. Take a look at his darting runs and tell me he does not remind you of the mercurial Brazilian ex-captain, Cafu. Take a look at his penalties and tell me Hazard will not watch in envy. He is the dream set-piece taker.

Mustapha Abdulahi took up Samuel Okon's position and I was not surprised. Remember that he was the preferred left back at the African U-17 Championship in Morocco before Okon snatched the spot at the U-17 World Cup in UAE. While he needs to improve on his deliveries, he tracks back very well and provides an attacking outlet for the team. Whether there will be dejavu in New Zealand is something I'm waiting to see upfold, but having watched the two leftbacks closely, while Okon might be more of a goal-scorer, Mustapha is a better defender. Who noticed the last ditch tackle on the Senegalese last night? With the anticipated coming of more attacking players, I think we need to retain someone like Mustapha who can track back and defend aggressively.

Zaharadeen Bello is arguably the best defender in the tournament. He is my kind of sweeper. Because I have not being impressed by Izu Omego, I believe that for a place in the starting line-up, Abubakar will have to battle it out fiercely with Bello as Ndidi is already a sure-banker in that central pairing. Bello commanded the back well and I can't wait for a Belgian or Dutch side to snatch up this budding talent.

For a team that has so many people going forward, Akinjide Idowu offered a role that is under-appreciated. He shields the defence and breaks opponents' forays into our area. The few people who appreciated what Makelele did at Real Madrid would be impressed by what Idowu did at this tournament. The pitch made a mess of some of his passes but I have no doubt that he will excel at the World Cup where excellent football pitches abound.

Make no mistake about it, though he did not score more than the 3 goals he did in the group stage, Awoniyi has improved alot. I like his strength and though I still think he will not be a first choice when Iheanacho, Simon Moses and Isaac Success come back, I think he is a great asset to this team and the future is bright if he can only keep his head down.

Joshua Enaholo is making me have a rethink about Alampasu. Remember that Alampasu was not the first choice at the U-17 Nations' cup. I doubt that will be the case this time around. Joshua has fantastic reflex and his ability to take responsibilities is highlighted in the daring saves he made throughout the tournament. He should come highly recommended to Israeli clubs.

Overall, I am more convinced that this is a team to really watch out for. I can't wait for Nigeria to have a taste of her first U-20 World Cup come June 2015.

We are the future of Nigerian football - Garba

Nigeria defeated hosts Senegal in the final of the 2015 African U-20 Championship in Dakar on Sunday to claim a record seventh title in the competition.

Both teams met in the group stage, with the Flying Eagles triumphing 3-1 but their rematch in the final wasn’t an easy affair for the Nigerians, who nonetheless, snatched a lone-goal victory through midfielder Bulbwa Bernard after 17 minutes, and toiled to safeguard the slim lead amid hostile local fans.

The Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba attributed his team’s success over the host nation to discipline, solidarity and experience.

“We met a better Senegal team than our first confrontation. They were very determined and wanted to win the trophy by all means but what made the difference to our favour was that we played a compact pattern both in the midfield and defence. We tried to hinder their movement and construction and it worked out for us,” Garda said.

Most of the players in the Nigeria team progressed from the U17 Golden Generation, which Garba believes will make Nigeria proud soon in the senior level.

“This group is the future of Nigerian football. Most of them were groomed at football academies in Nigeria, which is another indication that the country’s grassroots talent development is effective. And it is hope for the country’s football.”

Nigeria made hundred percent achievement at the tournament, according to the coach. The trophy in Senegal and a ticket to New Zealand, where the junior World Cup will hold in May, were the team’s major objectives, Garba said.

Nigeria has never won the Fifa U-20 World Cup. Ghana is the only African nation to have tasted gold at that level. Garba wants to be the second African team by winning the title in New Zealand.

“We’ll do our best to win the junior World Cup. My boys are capable of achieving it and I believe it is not impossible,” he said.

We tormented Nigeria - Koto

Senegal coach Joseph Koto did not express any disappointment following his team’s loss to Nigeria in the final of the 2015 African U-20 Championship in Dakar on Sunday. The junior Teranga Lions were defeated 1-0 by the Flying Eagles, thus failing to break the jinx of not having won a continental title despite the huge talents the country churns out every year.

Rather, the coach said he was very happy because his team showed impressive improvement from their last game against Nigeria which they “timidly” lost 3-1.

“I said earlier that we lost heavily to Nigeria in the group stage because my players were scared of the Flying Eagles. But in the final, everybody saw how they engaged Nigeria from start to finish. That is a good sign ahead of the junior World Cup in New Zealand,” Koto said.

“Nigeria played with high professionalism and admirable experience and that helped them over us. In football you learn everyday and that learning process comes while playing, while losing and while winning.

“We have nothing to regret. We are happy. We’ll turn our focus to the World Cup and begin preparations immediately.”

Bulbwa - My Goal Was Well Calculated, Not a Fluke

The hero of the 2015 African U-20 Championship, Bernard Bulbwa, who scored Nigeria’s goal in final against Senegal, tells superport.com that the Flying Eagles played according to instructions and were selfless in their roles on the field.

It took just 17 minutes from kickoff for the 19-year-old midfielder of Shuttle Sports Academy in Nigeria to break the stalemate and put his side ahead 1-0.

His long-range effort was another breathtaking goal of the tournament, although Senegal coach Joseph Koto believes Bulbwa was only lucky to find the back net.

“He wasn’t that close. He attempted something and it entered. He was only just lucky and we weren’t,” Koto had said in his post-match press conference.

However, Bulbwa refutes such assumption insisting he worked hard for the winner that handed Nigeria their seventh record title in the competition.

“I had space around me after outpacing my marker. I saw the posts and I shot and it floated past the rooftop and that was a goal. You don’t get such a goal by luck. It is hard work and faith in what you are doing,” Bulbwa told superport.com.

The early goal made it look as though the six-time champions would have an easy ride over the hosts, but Nigeria were pressed at different intervals by Senegal, who were desperate for a leveller.

“We were not panicking when they held domination. We kept closing potholes and trying to keep them at bay. And you could have noticed that they were always pushing and retreating because they failed to find a breach.

“That done, I think we’ll go back home and start training for the World Cup. Being the winner of the African Youth Tournament, we will surely be one of the teams to beat in New Zealand.

“And that means we need to buckle up to live up to expectation. Our coach is already setting eyes on the title we all should follow in that direction,” he said.

Disu thumbs up F/Eagles’ AYC feat

Former Flying Eagles head coach, Tunde Disu has said he was not surprise the side emerged winners of the 2015 Orange African Under-20 Championship in Senegal.

The Nigerians claimed their seventh title at the expense of hosts, Senegal with 1-0 win in the final decided on Sunday at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium, Dakar.

Bernard Bulbwa’s individual brilliant goal in the 20th minute proved adequate to hand the Nigerians the coveted African title.

Disu said the Flying Eagles made known their preparedness to claim the title after they subdued tournament favourites, Black Satellites of Ghana in the semifinals of the biennial showpiece.

“Congratulations to Flying Eagles for winning the Orange African Under-20 Championship at the expense of hosts, Senegal.

“They’ve proved themselves to be the best side of the championship and I’m not surprised at all given the quality of players as well as coaches.

“Of course, I’m not surprised at all for the side to have defeated championship favourites and former World champions, Ghana showed the stuff Flying Eagles are made of.

“Ghana have always posed a hard nut for any Nigerian side in the age grade categories so the victory against Ghana was clear indication that it’s a matter of time before Nigeria is crowned champions of the championship.

“They proved their superiority against Senegal twice and that showed the pedigree and stuff in that team.

“The coaches, too have done excellently well to blend the players to get the perfect finish that won the title for Nigeria.

“Nduka Ugbade was with me in Saudi’89 as a player and captain, I’m impressed with his progression as a coach.

@joseph. Couldn't help but laugh my heart out when i read this morning your thought on Ifeanyi Mathew. Quoting you " I personally think Ifeanyi Matthew should be called up to the Super Eagles NOW. The lad is a
baller. Excellent passing and more. He is made to
be a midfield general and throughout the
tournament he has shown that he is the one that
made that midfield tick". I had seen this long time ago. That was why i told you he is far better than Obinna Nwobodo and Manu knows.

I have never doubted the quality of Matthew. It was you who doubted and underrated Nwobodo and being someone who has being following this team longer than you probably know, I made it clear that at the Super 6, Nwobodo was the best midfielder. Therefore, his quality is not in doubt. This is evident in the matches he played at the Youth Championship.

That said, both are pure quality and at this stage what they both need is some world-class grooming and then Mikel can rest from his labours.

F/Eagles never doubted title hope

Flying Eagles goalkeeper, Olorunleke Ojo has said his side never entertained any fear of defeat in the course of Orange African Under-20 Championship final clash against hosts, Senegal.

The Nigerians piped the Young Lions of Teranga 1-0 in the final AYC clash on Sunday at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium, Dakar to claim a record seventh African title.

Ojo said the encounter though somehow tough than they envisaged but they were determined to hang onto their hard earned lead till the end of the keenly contested clash.

“We believed in ourselves that we’ll win the clash against Senegal even at the toughest part of the game.

“We knew right from start that Senegal won’t be same as the ones we defeated 3-1 in the group’s first game.

“And it turned out exactly the way we predicted it as the Senegalese side we confronted in the final were truly difficult.

“We went into the final clash with a mindset that we never met the side previously and it helped us immensely.

“However, we told ourselves that once we take the lead in the clash and unable to score more we’ll defend it with our blood if need be and that was exactly what we did.

“Senegal really improved from the side we played in the group stage and I can say outright that they’re the toughest opponents we encountered at the championship not even Ghana.

“AYC challenge over we’ll continue to work hard until we land the World Cup title in New Zealand,” said the Giwa FC shot stopper to supersport.com.

The newest African champions touched down in Lagos on Monday morning and immediately head off to Abuja.

The AYC semifinalists namely champions, Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Mali will represent the continent at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Nigeria will compete for honour in Group E together with Brazil, Hungary and Korea Democratic Peoples Republic.
