Arrests of Suspected Boko Haramites in the South and the Hypocrisy of Yorubas by Francis5: 3:21pm On Jul 08, 2014
Soon after creating this thread yesterday, I was banned from Nairaland by a so-called spambooth. Now I am back again

It seems that most Igbos here are more interested in chasing the mundane (e.g., Igboland is better than Yorubaland, Igbos go to school more than Yoruba, Yorubas are dirty and ugly, Anambra is better than Imo, and all such trites) instead of the substance (how to counter concrete anti-Igbo sentiments). Otherwise, how could they maintain a surprising nonchalant attitude when Yorubas and northerners (Fulani, Hausa, Benue, Kogi, in particular) do all they can to heap burning coals of lies against them? Igbos think their enemies are only the Muslim North, but there is an insidious and latent enemy in the south: Yoruba. They instigate all sorts of evil against you and often times you chase shadows instead of realizing what’s going on and nipping it in the bud. How do you explain that northerners purported to be Boko Haram have been arrested and detained uncountable times (see several instances below) in Yorubaland and they did not frown against it, neither did the northerners, nor did you the Igbo. These people were arrested not by the Yoruba masses, but by the Nigerian security agencies most members of which, by God, are made up of northern elements, followed by Yorubas.

Thousands of Boko Haram have been killed or arrested by the same Nigerian security agencies in virtually all the northern states of Nigeria. Arrests are now also being made inthe Niger Delta area. No one has blamed individual northerners for these killings and arrests of purported Boko Haram members; the ordinary Niger Deltans have not been blamed for the arrests either. The Yorubas maintained their silence.

Now, people also purported to be Boko Haram are being arrested in the East, and the Yoruba in concert with their northern masters are crying foul and accusing ordinary Igbos of conducting arrests based on tribal profiling, when IN FACT as in the case of arrests in Yorubaland, these arrests were made by the same Nigerian security officials, many of whom by God, are northerners and Yorubas. Note that no Yoruba has been arrested in the East for being a Boko Haram.

See Yorubas and northerners accusing Igbos of arresting northerners in Igboland here

https://www.nairaland.com/1803769/more-northerners-detained-fresh-abia

My question is this: why should Igbos take the blame for arrests made in Igboland by Nigeria-wide security agencies but the Yorubas and northerners are not blamed for similar arrests made in Yorubaland and in the North by the same Nigeria-wide security agencies?

The Yorubas here go as far as inflaming passions and insinuating that Igbos outside Igboland should be arrested (because of arrests of northerners in Igboland made by NIGERIAN SECURITY AGENCIES) and detained, citing that there are more Igbos in Kano alone than all the northerners in Igboland (of course a big, fat lie - we do not have any census data to prove that). Yet, the same Yorubas disagree when Igbos, following the Yoruba claim pattern, counter with their own claim that there are xxxx million Igbos in Nigeria. See how Yorubas always want to eat their cake of lies and falsehood and still have it?

Igbos in Nairaland, why are you people so careless? Why have you not noticed this trend? Do you not realize what these false accusations by hateful people can do to you? Your enemies up north you can avoid because they usually come with guns and bows and arrows. Your enemies in the west come with a different game plan; they are not armed with guns and bows and arrows, but with their fake and lie-fiiled ‘’brains’’. This ‘’brain’’, you Igbos have shown time and time again, that you have in abundance and can outmatch the Yoruba ‘’brain’’ any day. Why is it lacking in this instance?

Four men suspected to be members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect have been arrested in Lagos.

The men, Sulaiman Alli, Abdul Saniyu Sadu, Sulaimon Alimi Adeniyi and Abdul Hakeem Abdulrahamu were arrested on Sunday evening while allegelly distributing the sect’s pamphlets at the Lagos abattoir, Oko-Oba Road, Agege.

P.M.News gathered that the suspects, who had the symbolic Islamic long beard and dressed in the typical Islamic cleric manner, were busy creating awareness for the sect when on a tip-off, policemen from the Abattoir Police Station arrested them.

The suspects, who speak fluent Yoruba, with one of them carrying Yoruba tribal marks on his cheeks, were later transferred to Area ‘G’ Police Command, Ogba, where they were detained.

It was further learnt that the suspects were yesterday transferred to the State Anti-Vice Section of the State Police Command, GRA, Ikeja, for further investigation.

A police source told P.M.News that some of the pamphlets found on them were highly provocative.

The source also revealed that there were frantic efforts by two lawyers to secure their bail at Area ‘G’, but that they were not granted the bail as the case had already been transferred to the Anti-Vice Section of the State Police Command, Ikeja, Lagos.

Boko Haram: Army Places Officers on High Alert in Lagos

• Arrests 54 suspects, recovers 14 explosives, other weapons in 7 months
Ezeobi Chiemelie

To forestall any breach of security in Lagos State, especially in the light of intelligence report that some dislodged Boko Haram sect members are relocating to the South-west, personnel of the Nigerian Army (NA) have been placed on high alert in strategic areas and flash points.
This is just as the Army in the last seven months has arrested about 54 members of the sect in different operations in Lagos and recovered as many as 14 explosives, AK47 rifles and various types of ammunition from the arrested suspects.
The outgoing General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division of the NA, Major General Obi Umahi, made this disclosure in an interview with journalists during the change of guard to mark his handing over to his successor, Major General TI Dibi.
It would be recalled that the Army had not long ago arrested over 60 Boko Haram suspects who had sneaked into the state after being dislodged from the North-east.
Umahi urged his successor never to work on the assumption that elements of Boko Haram sect are not within the command's Area of Responsibility (AOR), adding that he should keep watch round the clock and ensure that his alertness level remains high.
Umahi said one of his trying moments as GOC 81 Division was the realities of the existence of Boko Haram elements within Lagos and Ogun States, which are within the commands area of responsibility.
He said, "The most trying moment for me was the point we realised that we were already living with Boko Haram elements. Though we had always assumed they could be around, the realities did not dawn on us until we made the first arrest of 12 suspects.
"At that point, we had to expand our dragnets and spread out networks to garner as many within as possible. This proved a tedious challenge for us but, at the end, we were able to mop 42 of them up. So, I can say that I am leaving Lagos safer than I met it."
He added, "While some of the initial 12 were set free after screening from the State Security Service (SSS), others are currently facing trial with exhibits such as 14 explosives, AK47 rifles and various types of ammunition, among others.
"The 42 who were subsequently arrested by the command have been profiled, screened and are awaiting trial by the appropriate authorities," he said.
Umahi said, "They did not come to us as well prepared military intelligence but as rumour. All the same, we do not leave any information lying down. We have acted in response to it and the signs are evident in all military formations."
Last July, THISDAY had reported on how a two-week raid carried out by a Joint Task Force led by operatives of the Nigerian Army, 81 Division Headquarters, Lagos, may have saved residents in Lagos and Ogun States from possible attacks by terrorists, who had already perfected plans to simultaneously bomb 16 landmark locations in Lagos including tank farms in Apapa and Ijora as well as the popular Third Mainland Bridge.

Nigeria: Army Arrests 42 Boko Haram Members
BY EVELYN USMAN, 30 JULY 2013
More on This

Nigerian Army, yesterday, in Lagos, paraded 42 suspected members of Boko Haram sect arrested in their hideouts in Lagos and Ogun states. Some of the paraded suspects confessed to have killed soldiers and civilians in the northern parts of the country.
They also confessed to have fled Borno State for the western part of the country following the ongoing military intervention. Parading the suspects before newsmen, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Major General Obi Umahi, stated that the suspects were arrested following intelligence report on the migration of some members of the sect to the South, from the operation's commander in the South-Eastern part of the country.
He said based on this information at the division's disposal, a coordinated raid was carried out in some criminal hideouts in both states. He said: "The Command organised and carried out raids in conjunction with intelligence operatives in various parts of these states.
"The Boko Haram members' influx is adduced to plans to unleash terror in some parts of South-West, which includes 81 Division's area of responsibility.
"The raids were conducted from 12 to 23 July in various hideouts in Lagos and Ogun states, which are fast becoming Boko Haram enclaves.
"The raids were conducted in Ibafo trailer parks and Ileke new trailer garage in Ogun State; Aviation quarters, Mafoluku Oshodi, Ketu/Mile 12 motor parks, Orile trailer park, Lekki new extension and Bar Beach in Lagos State, where 42 suspects were arrested.
"They all admitted to be members of the sect and also said they had participated in some deadly Boko Haram operations."

Nigeria: Boko Haram penetrating Nigeria's west and southeast .

By Konye Obaji Ori

..

Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram's ability to strike at the heart of the country's capital Abuja and its commercial nerve centre – Lagos- as well as the recent arrest of 60 members of the sect in the southeast is a reminder that the group has penetrated the pivotal fabrics of the Nigeria state.

On Wednesday there were bomb explosions in Abuja, Lagos, and Adamawa as well as arrests of suspected Boko Haram members in Enugu state in the east.

Boko Haram's prevalent activities into the west, east, southeast, and the Abuja has fuelled public anger over the government's inability to curtail the group's range.

As the bombs went off in Abuja, Lagos, and Adamawa, 21 Boko Haram suspects were arrested in Enugu state.

The arrests followed the earlier capture of over 400 other suspects in Abia State, hours after a bomb was diffused at a church in another southeastern state of Imo.

Boko Haram seek to instill public unrest and terror across Nigeria by orchestrating activities beyond the northeast where it was born.

A third deadly explosion in Abuja in two months killed 21 people after a car bomb tore through a crowded shopping district during rush hour on Wednesday.

The explosion destroyed parts of the busy Banex Plaza shopping Centre in the Wuse 2 district just of Abuja just before 4 p.m.

Hours later a car bomb went off in the commercial state of Lagos. The port area of Lagos was hit.

A car bomb exploded at the busy Apapa area of Lagos, killing four persons, and injuring many others.

Two banks operating in the area, and many other commercial and residential buildings were destroyed.

A separate blast rocked an area in the northeastern Adamawa state on Wednesday, but no one was killed or injured.

Boko Haram has staged previous attacks in Abuja, but most of its targets have been in the north-east of the country.

However, the group has moved to instill fear in the southeast, and western Nigeria as well.

Attacks in the city of Abuja are symbolic to Boko Haram's opposition to the Nigerian government.

In April, more than 70 people were killed in a bomb blast at a bus stop on the outskirts of Abuja.

The group also killed at least 19 people and injured 60 others in a car bomb attack near a bus station in Abuja suburbs in May.

In 2011, the group also carried out a deadly car bomb attack on the United Nations building in Abuja.

BOKO HARAM: Police Arrests Illegal Immigrants In Lagos, Kwara, Ogun, Others

■Society

by Editor - Jul 5, 2014

It is only sensible to think that if the North is becoming too hot for the insurgents, they may want to come down South.

By Ruka Makanjuola

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has been embarking on periodic raids in the South and South-West States of Nigeria following intelligence reports that the terrorist Boko Haram sect is beginning to gain a foothold in other parts of Nigeria.

Parks and bus stations have been raided to flush out illegal immigrants in Lagos, Ogun and Kwara States since a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in the Apapa area of Lagos on June 25. The Nigerian Police has been working with the Nigerian Immigration Service in this regard.

Spokesperson for the Ogun State Police command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the raids to The Punch “We are aware that there may be pockets of Boko Haram insurgents here. We are working based on that knowledge. It is only sensible to think that if the North is becoming too hot for the insurgents, they may want to come down South. But the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, has put in place strategies for this reason.

“Arresting illegal immigrants is just one of the many options available to us. Other security agencies are currently working with us on these strategies to ensure that we do not experience any violent attack.”

The Police in Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa and Oyo States have also been raiding perceived Boko Haram hotspots and sleeper cells in their domains.

Last month, some 486 alleged Boko Haram suspects were stopped in Aba as they journeyed to Port Harcourt. Yesterday, we also reported that bombs were sighted and defused by men of the Nigerian Police in Abia State.

Nigerian Army Sued Over Arrest Of Members Of Boko Haram Suspects

Nigerian Army Sued Over Arrest Of Members Of Boko Haram Suspects

SOLDIER NL 500x284 Nigerian Army Sued Over Arrest Of Members Of Boko Haram Suspects

A retired sergeant, Burma Abdullahi from Borno State, has sought the order of a Federal High Court in Lagos State to declare as unlawful, the arrest and detention of his teenage children by the Nigerian Army.

Burma’s children, Ahmed Abdullahi, 16; Muhammad Abdullahi, 11; Haruna Zarkya, 18 and Yahaya Ibrahim, 7, were allegedly arrested in Lagos on July 13, 2013 by the Nigerian Army on the suspicion that they were members of the Boko Haram sect.

The four of them were said to have been arrested during a military raid on their house, at Mafoluku, when their father was away to Maiduguri, Borno State.

Burma through his counsel, Mr. Christopher Okafor, is also asking for N10m claim from the Nigerian Army, Chief of Army Staff, General Officer, commanding the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Lagos and the Attorney-General of the Federation, who have been joined as respondents in the suit.

In his submissions, Okafor argued that the arrest of the teenagers was illegal and constitutes a breach of their rights to person liberty.

He described the suspicion of the teens being involved in terrorist activities as both unreasonable and laughable saying they had only fled to Lagos from Maiduguri for safety.

In the affidavit filed by Burma, he averred that his temporary relocation with his family from Maiduguri to Lagos was due to the growing insecurity in the northeast Nigeria.

He is seeking an order of the court for the release of his wards from military detention, a N10m claim and a public apology over the illegal detention.

Earlier at the resumed hearing of the case on Monday, Okafor notified the court of the absence of the defence despite repeated notice served.

He also informed that the counter-affidavit filed by the defence was out of time, adding that they had also failed to regularize the affidavit and pay default fee.

He therefore urged the court to strike out the defendants’ counter-affidavit and allow him move and adopt his application before the court.

Justice Okon Abang accordingly granted him leave to move his application and adopt his written address.

The judge adjourned ruling on the matter till September 26, 2014.

Talking about the litany of silly Ibos on Nl, you will agree with me that, so far, they havn't proved otherwise.
Ibos are represented by their worst (or, maybe their best is not good enough) on NL, same way the worst represent them in politics.

Police arrest 17 northerners as illegal immigrants

Lagos police boss, Umar Manko

There was confusion at the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service on Tuesday after it was discovered that 17 people from northern Nigeria were among 92 illegal immigrants arrested by the police.

The Lagos State Police Command and the state Taskforce on Environment and other Related Offences had arrested the people on Friday after the Nigerian Army and State Security Service arrested a suspected terrorist in Ijora area of the state.

The suspects were later transferred to immigration on Monday.

However, immigration officers discovered that some of the suspects were Nigerians during screening.

While parading the suspects on Tuesday, the Comptroller for the state command, Mr. Rasheed Odupeyin, said the error was expected since the police were not trained in identifying illegal immigrants.

He said NIS was never carried along during such raids and urged the government to include the service in the state security council.

Odupeyin said, “Suspected illegal immigrants were brought to us. About 92 in all. There are 18 of them from Mali, 57 from Niger but 17 are Nigerians.

“About 23 suspects from Niger have been transferred to Kamba border post. Our vehicle is faulty and we don’t want to use a truck in conveying the rest, but they all will be deported soon.

Asked how the suspects were able to enter into the country illegally, Odupeyin said most times they took irregular routes or beat the porous borders.

He however said, “Right now, the acting Comptroller-General is making efforts to send officers to the borders and many have even been deployed from passport offices to the border areas.”

Odupeyin urged lagosians to report illegal immigrants to the authorities as it was not safe harbouring them.

“My advice is that if you allow illegal immigrants in your area, you are equally endangering your life. We are not referring to Africans alone. Even the Chinese and Indians living illegally in the country should be reported,” he said.

As an Igbo, what are you doing about the serious, yet false accusations being leveled against your people? Or do you think this is not serious enough? Wait until your people are attacked and killed in the North for arrests made by security agencies. That is what Yorubas are trying to achieve, in case it is lost on you.
