Its official, the 96 years liberation movement have split, as those who were unhappy with the firing of Pres Mbeki forms their own party.

The day the ANC split
MATTEW BURBIDGE AND AGENCIES | JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - Oct 08 2008 09:54

Former defence minister, Mosiuoa Lekota said on Wednesday he was forming a new political party.

Speaking at Talk Radio 702 in Sandton, Johannesburg, Lekota said “This is probably the parting of the ways” [with the ANC].

“I hope sense will prevail , if not, there’s no going back,” he said in announcing that a “convention, or congress” would be called shortly to “determine how to procees with democracy in this country”.

Political analyst Xolela Mangcu earlier told the station that he thought the new party was unlikely to be a political force.

“It [the party] has to come out of society, not as a splinter from another party. It has to be something that galvanises the people, like the MDC [Movement for Democratic Change in Zimbabwe]. It has to excite the people."

He also questioned whether the Lekota would be able to have a political life outside of the ANC.

On the question of the perceived intolerance in the ruling party, he said “they [Lekota and others] were the ones that were intolerant under [former] president Thabo Mbeki".

ANC leader Jacob Zuma has said Mbeki would be asked to help campaign at next year's election, in an apparent attempt at reconciliation.

Zuma, widely expected to become president after the general election, was quoted as telling a meeting of black businessmen on Tuesday that any breakaway party would have no alternative policies to offer and could not last.

"You can't believe in the ANC and its policies so deeply, and then form an organisation that repeats the same policies, that would be funny," he said.

Alternatives
"If it happens it could be the anger and die down very quickly. When people are shocked, angry, quickly reacting, you could say 'I'd better go away'."

"What kind of alternative policies could you put across alternate to the ANC, that would challenge the ANC? I don't think so, but I'm not saying it can't happen."

However, if people did that, Zuma said, "You would be stranded if you were in the ANC, you could be in cold and in the snow, and then say, I better go back home."

Zuma said the ANC had in its history gone through a lot of similar experiences -- such as opposition that arose within its ranks to taking up an armed struggle.

It had always succeeded in getting through them, he said.

The party deposed Mbeki over allegations of political interference in a corruption case involving Zuma.

You don't have to loose your temper over such basic things.

Nairaland is the Nigerian Forum.
Your thread discusses the politics of South Africa.
South Africa is foreign territory to Nigeria.
And so South African politics should be discussed in the Foreign Affairs section.
That's why it was created, it hasnt always been there.
Quite easily done, wasn't it?
Please don't loose your temper over this either.

This section needs a moderator like yesterday.

And let me correct the statement that say ANC is spliting,ANC is not spliting, people who are formming this new party are people who where defeated during the ANC leadership election in Polokwane now that they lost on voteS feel that the new leadership is not the real ANC,they are sore loosers who want to govern forever. We gave them their chance and they did their best and failed where they failed,Now we have elected a new leadership which I belief will do much more and take South Africa to the next level, attracting new investors, creating jobs, offering a world class healthcare in public hospitals, improve our educational system, training our police force and providing them with best equipment and knowledge to fight crime. In short creating healthier, safer and happier South Africa.
South Africa will never be a ground where dictators and corrupt leaders are breeded,We have fought aaparheid for years without giving up,lots of people lost their lifes fighting, family where broken, souls where totured and we wont let anyone, even Mandela to mess our beautiful country. We owe this to ourself.

ha! you talk about corruption. i wonder why Zuma's financial adviser was hit with a 15 year sentence for accepting bribes from investors looking for lucrative contracts and you say you will never allow corrupt leaders in your midsts. You are about to vote for one next year. Watch what your precious zulu socialist will do once he gets into power.

The reason he is courting Mbeki to an active role in his campaign next year is to avoid the split which he knows will affect him adversely. I don't know why you guys can't see right through Zuma. He and his cronies will bamboozle you into thinking that he is working for the masses by creating socialist agendas when in fact his plan is to insert as many of his people into leadership positions which will bolster their pockets.

Mbeki was an excellent President post Mandela. The South African econnomy was quite stable during his tenure. His administration was overwhelmed with "entitlement" seeking organizations who believe it was their turn to reap the benefits without putting in the work for it and you accused him of being out of touch. You gusy would actually support a numskul who tells you he washed his privates after having Sex with a HIv infected person and thats all he needs to do to protect himself.

Let there be a breakaway party. In a true democracy the discourse can only bring improvement in the lives of the people if the true agenda of the parties are to serve the people.
