Typically new ideas are met with resistance by nigerians which is unfortunate until oyibo people do it so remember this if you've already decided to oppose before reading this thread.

We are insecure in Nigeria. Nigerians don't feel safe, and the people trusted to give them safety are scarier than the things that make them unsafe. We have put missles, bombs, and heavy ammunition in the hands of a lot of thugs in this country that are no different from the uniformed thugs they're supposed to be opposing.

My idea is that we should only recruit graduates into the army. A room full of university students will always behave with more dignity and civility than a room full of illiterates. You never hear about Youth Corpers extorting, intimidating, abusing and harming the locals they serve regardless of how much authority you give them. You never hear about Youth Corpers abusing their positions and they leave the communities they serve with a feeling of friendship and service that many serve hold dear for the rest of their lives. I'm yet to hear of a youth corper batch that is loathed by locals the way the police and army and even politicians are loathed by locals.

The reason is not that education makes you a more moral person, as history and the present will show that blood lust and power mongering doesn't discriminate in poisoning man's character. The real reason is because if in a instant gratification society like nigeria, a young man or woman decides to invest 4 unpaid years into learning and building themselves to be a better member of society and accomplished person, the decision alone tell you a lot about that person's character.

Most Nigerians want to get rich immediately. Many think education is just a long route to hunger, but there are still many among us with the humility and vision to invest in themselves and their dignity by taking a risk and pursuing a degree in an uncertain country.

This is the type of mentality we need in leadership, and i consider the police and army as leadership. Educated soldiers will be more effective fighters because fighting in a psychological game. Someone with the hair pin mentality of most of our thugs can only shoot and emote. It's rare he has the ability to rationalize as effectively and humanely as our graduates and this is why NYSC has the reputation it has and the police force has the contrary. Education has always been valued in the military, as officers are (supposed to be) educated men...lets take it a step further.

I believe the military and by extension the police should be manned by graduates. After, their wages should match their value. It will solve the following problems.

1. Graduate unemployment: This issue is going to collapse the value of education in nigeria if it's not treated as an emergency.
2. Military and Police Excess: This issue has already collapsed the value of the army and police
3. Military Ineffectiveness: I have never heard of NYSC ineffectiveness because NYSC is manned by effective goal driven people and is thus and effective goal driven organization. It's more important for our army and police to have this character.
4. Military Devaluation: If the average police officer and military man continues to be the type of person that Nigerian society doesn't value, those organizations will lack the value they need to be effective and commensurable with society.

With the Abuja stampedes and floods of able bodied youths that line up whenever a job offer is announced I have no doubt that our unemployed graduates have enough numbers to man a formidable army

Who form secret societies in the Universities.

IdomaLikita: Who then forms the Officer Cadre?

from there they can chose it through merit since they're all educated. So that the officers are the MOST or BEST education and not just officers cause they're educated.

Can you compare secert society violence to agbero, almajiri and talakawa violence? because as it stands we're getting our police from those three groups. I would rather a university cultist (as if even 1% of nigerian students are in cults) than a boko haram member like we have now

ability to do something and cause to do it do not base on education. secret behind army and police ineffectiveness is motivation. there are not motivated, and what do expect from them.

good idea but completely not applicable.
there will be no equal representation of states. a single state like delta, anambra or ogun will have more qualified officers than 11 northern states combined. OP must be from mars.

Who told you all your clueless presidents want a police force /Military manned by graduates.
How many times have we heard,

"Him grammar too much"
"Na dat one we go chop"

Zombie be o zombie .
Zombie no go talk unless you tell am to talk.
Your thieving politician only want zombies.

It is no fluke that state police and regimental army were park of the SW Positions.
It is a pain to see one of the most disciplined police force in this part of the work(the western region constabulary) be replaced by thugs and nincompoops who mostly have no roots in odua states .

You have very valid points, but I don't believe that negates the OPs point, they actually should all go together.

We need Police/Army to be better educated, there's no doubt about that, and university education may set a good barrier to ensure that candidates to the force have at the very least, a high mental ability. Higher Education doesn't necessarily have to be involved though, but what is necessary is a 21st century Police Academy, that employs merit in enlisting new officers.

With that said, they definitely need motivation as well, there's no doubt about that one either. I am one of the greatest advocates for improvement in Police Welfare and Tech Packages. I mean these guys should be earning not less than N150,000/year, even if it results in fewer officers for a while. They should also have 21st century tech(licence validation, cams and mics in cars, criminal databases...)and better police stations equipped with all necessary hardware(recently went to a police station and didn't see 1 computer, sad).

Unfortunately, it seems only those that are not in politics have eyes to see all these problems, while those in politics just carry on like everything is how it should be.

It just won't work! Remember Age is another factor! What is d Average University Graduation Age in d Country? You don't want an Army full of Old people!

If you want a More disciplined force, I suggest NYSC should be After Secondary School!!
So that those entering the Force as Rank and File would already be disciplined & cultured while those opting for College Education would only have Educational Advantage!
In all, you'll have a Youth Population with High level of Discipline from which the Armed Forced could recruit from!
