yoji:
Let's look at it this way, Germany won the world cup withoutt their best player i.e reus meaning without muller it would have made no difference. But without messi, Argentina will definitely not come near the final sef. So year he does.
Reus is not from Germany.

ddippset: i said 'almost single handedly' you try to twist it to 'single handedly' lols.
Argentine strength came from their defence. Left to Messi, they would not have made it with a shaky defence. There is no almost single handedly. Mascherano, Garay and Zabaletta were amazing. Even Demeichelis put in an amazing performance. Rojo was clearly in the top 3 right backs of the competition with Howedes and Blind.

Is it one game it takes to reach third place in a World Cup? Forlan was brilliant the whole tournament. He was the difference for Uruguay. So tell me about Messi. Was he the best player in this World Cup? Nope.

thegoodjoehunt: You see how you exposed yourself? No wonder you thought Messi did it single handedly. You did not know that:

Mascherano made 28 tackles at the 2014 World Cup, more than any other player.

Mascherano made a tournament-high 509 passes with a 90% completion rate.

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/28275448
no player can win the world cup all alone. but in this tournament, messi show how a single player can drag his team almost singlehandedly. you were one of those saying at the beginning of the world cup that this argentine team are not good, belgium will knock them out, holland will knock the out and so on. then they reached the final and all of a sudden you guys remember mascherano made 1 million tackles. against iran with 10 men behind the ball and 1 min to go messi struck! against bosnia with 25 mins to go and 1 men behind the ball, messi struck! against switzerland with seconds to go and 9 men behind the ball, messi struck, against belgium with all their stars messi drew 3 defenders and laid a through pass to de maria for the only goal, against holland with all of the holland stars running from the first penalty messi stepped forward and led his team by example. even with mascherano's 1 million tackles and passes, argentina would never have crossed the quarter final.

The goal in the Uruguay vs Ghana game in 2010 scored by the Uruguayans was scored by Forlan. So how did he not take them there. Suarez was red carded, a penalty given and Gyan missed. They went into penalties, Forlan scored and Uruguay won by penalties. Tell me how Suarez took them there more than Forlan?

there is always single handedly. let me put it for you in proportion so you may understand better. messi did 90% of the work.

Messi did not do it almost single handedly. Argentina did not have a high goal scoring performance. What saved them was that their defence was rock solid and they went behind once in the whole world cup and that was for About seven minutes in the whole world cup.

It was not almost single handedly. It is not true.

see how you contradict yourself so much. on one hand you are saying that messi had a good defence and there is nothing like single handedly and then on the other hand you are trying to convince me that forlan TOOK TOOK TOOK uruguay to the semi finals. if this is not hypocrisy then tell me what is.

Messi disappeared in the Quarters to the final. He was not amazing. Forlan's case, he was the difference. Messi was not. The defence was. So Messi did not do it almost single handedly.

so you really do think that a team with aguero, lavezzi, de maria, palacio, higuain , messi (top strikers in the whole of world football) should win games based on a good defence? you just put a nail in your own coffin. no team wins the world cup without A GOOD ATTACK, A GOOD MIDFIELD AND A GOOD DEFENCE. the solid defence you are talking about could never have taken them near the second round! messi covered up for a thrash midfield, and he covered up for disgraceful higuain, aguero, palacio and lavezzi. he did the job of 6 men. without messi argentina would not play in the world cup final after 24 years. respect!

Forlan was joint highest goal scorer. Messi was not. He was two goals behind James Rodriguez and a goal behind Müller. I did not say Forlan did it almost single handedly. I am saying he was the difference. Messi was not the difference for Argentina.

If anybody is nailing his coffin, it is you. You now agree Messi was surrounded by great players. Even if they did not score much goals, they put in their work. The Argentine play is centered around Messi. They play for him to shine. Yet he was behind James Rodriguez and Muller.

Also Messi had the best defence in the World Cup. That is why they progressed. It was not because he was outstanding. If other teams like the Columbians had his kind of defence, they would have progressed more than Argentina. If Argentina had James Rodriguez in their team instead of Messi, they would have won the World cup.

[b]Both sides missed a string of decent chances but both were inspired by the men who do what Messi can't do.

Forget Messi's award as player of the tournament. That is a bad joke. He is a dream of a player but he has not been the player of this tournament.

That accolade belongs to Mascherano, who played like a super-human at times yesterday.

You want a reason why everyone knew Argentina would not fold yesterday as Brazil did in the semi-final? Just look at Mascherano.

The ex-Liverpool player is a fearsome competitor, the best in the business in the defensive midfield position he occupied yesterday.

He is there for his ability and for his spirit and yesterday he was the best player on the pitch by a distance.

It wasn't just that he broke up move after move as Germany pressed forward with a series of perfectly-timed interventions.

It wasn't just that he was the snapping, snarling, unyielding heart of this Argentina team.

He played some of the best passes of the game, too, including one delicate second half chip to Higuain that may have resulted in a goal if Higuain had not strayed marginally offside.

Incoherency again. We were talking of Forlan's impact at the 2010 World Cup and you are talking of 2014 World Cup. Haba, Forlan is no more the player today as he was at 2010. Remember at 2010, he was part of the Europa league winning team, scoring two goals in the finals.

In the Chelsea boss' opinion, 'La Pulga's' work on the pitch was fundamental because he was doing a job he wasn't used to doing at Barcelona.

"He sacrificed himself for the good of the team. He was more focused on winning the tournament than being its best player. I saw him playing in areas of the pitch where he doesn't usually play. He dropped deep and picked up the ball a long way from the opposition's goal", he said on his Yahoo programme.

"Messi has my utmost respect for what he did at the World Cup", the Portuguese added.

"Playing football for your country is different to playing for your club. If he'd wanted to show just how good he is he'd have played tucked in behind Higuaín, waiting for that moment to change the game", he said.

Mourinho even said Mascherano was outstanding before the final game.
