Shortly after our report yesterday that the Liberian man suspected of carrying the Ebola virus has died while quarantined in Nigeria, the local health ministry confirmed that he was indeed the first confirmed Ebola death in the Nigerian city of Lagos, which with a population of roughly 20 million, is the largest city in Africa and the fourth largest in the world.

The victim, who worked for the Liberian government, collapsed at Lagos international airport after arriving on a flight from Monrovia via the Togolese capital Lome on Tuesday, according to the Nigerian government. And now the "red alert" scramble begins in Nigeria, with a population fo 170 million, to isolate who else the deceased may have come in contact with.

The body of the first victim of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria, who died in Lagos on Friday, has been cremated.

Details of the cremation were not available at press time but Sunday Vanguard gathered that the eveny was witnessed by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, led by its Project Director, Professor Abdulsalam Nasidi, among others.

The decision to cremate the body of the victim, it was further gathered, may not be unconnected with the deadly nature of the Ebola Virus which is known to be easily transmissible from human to human during handling of corpses.

He arrived on a flight from Monrovia. How does the Nigerian government figure he was only exposed to medical workers? Was he the only passenger on that flight?

That's exactly that kind of statement by any government that makes people see all governments as just a bunch of liars.

I'll bet the government reps are getting their own families out of Lagos, right now all the while saying that everything is ok.

Nigeria said yesterday that Ebola caused the death of a Liberian national who died in quarantine in Lagos, confirmation that the worst-ever outbreak of the virus has reached Africa's most populous country.
"The patient was subjected to thorough medical tests ... which confirmed the virus of Ebola," as the cause of death, Nigeria's health minister, Onyebuchi Chukwu, told journalists.
The 40-year-old worked for the Liberian government and had travelled to Nigeria by air via Togo's capital Lome for a meeting organised by the west African bloc known as ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), the minister said.
He was suffering from severe vomiting and diarrhoea upon arrival at the international airport in Lagos and was transported directly to hospital, the minister said.
The patient "avoided contact with the general public" between the airport and the hospital, he added.

"All the passengers that the patient came in contact have been traced and are being investigated," in a bid to contain any spread of the virus across the city of more than 20 million people, Chukwu said.
As of July 20, the number of Ebola cases recorded in the months-long epidemic stood at 1,093, including more than 660 deaths, according to the World Health Organisation.
Liberia has seen 127 fatalities.
Lagos, the largest city in Sub-Saharan Africa, poses challenges to health officials seeking to contain a spread of the virus.
The congested city has terrible sanitation and a poor health system, but the minister assured that the patient did not come into contact with anyone outside the airport aside from medical workers.

OP Please read the bolded and desist from alarmist headlines.
However, I think a travel ban or very strict monitoring should be in place for visitors from affected countries.

What's the meaning of the Outbreak title? What's wrong with people on NL?

I know NL tolerate trash and bogus rubbish, but must some Nigerians lie, act crooked, dishonest and deceptive in everything you do?

It continues to go from bad to worse for Africa's "deadliest ever" Ebola epidemic which has officially claimed well over 600 lives, and unofficially many more.

Following the death of a Liberian government worker two days ago who collapsed in the international airport of Nigeria's 20-million megacity, Lagos which resulted in a "red alert" Nigeria clamping down into a quasi-quarantine state, sending specialists to airports and seaports fo containment, overnight we got an update on the other major Ebola story from last week, namely the female patient whose family broke her out of a hospital in Sierra Leone's capital Freetown, and who had been on the loose of several days, leading to a nationwide hunt. She has passed away, dying in an ambulance on the way to hospital, Reuters reports.

Amadu Sisi, a senior doctor at King Harman hospital in the capital Freetown, from which the patient was taken, said on Saturday that police found her in the house of a healer. Her family refused to hand her over and a struggle ensued with police, who finally retrieved her and sent her to hospital, he said. "She died in the ambulance on the way to another hospital," Sisi said.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – An American doctor battling West Africa’s Ebola epidemic has himself fallen sick with the disease in Liberia, his aid agency said.

Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian charity, said Dr Kent Brantly had been isolated at the group’s Ebola treatment center at the ELWA hospital in the Liberian capital Monrovia.

“Dr Brantly is married with two children,” the group said, in a statement posted to its website on Saturday.

“Samaritan’s Purse is committed to doing everything possible to help Dr Brantly during this time of crisis. We ask everyone to please pray for him and his family.”

MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — One of Liberia's most high-profile doctors has died of Ebola, a government official said Sunday, as an American doctor was treated in the West African country after contracting the disease, highlighting the risks facing health workers trying to combat the spread of the deadly virus.

Dr. Samuel Brisbane is the first Liberian doctor to die in an outbreak the World Health Organization says has killed 129 people in Liberia, and more than 670 in several West African countries. A Ugandan doctor working in the country died earlier this month.

The WHO says the outbreak, the largest ever recorded, has also killed 319 people in Guinea and 224 in Sierra Leone. As of July 23, the total number of cases in the three countries was 1,201, it said.

In Nigeria, officials announced on Friday that a Liberian official died of Ebola after flying from Monrovia to Lagos via Lome, Togo. The case underscored the difficulty of preventing Ebola victims from traveling given weak screening systems and the fact that the initial symptoms of the disease — including fever and sore throat — resemble many other illnesses.

Health workers are at serious risk of contracting the disease, which spreads through contact with bodily fluids.

Dr. Kent Brantly, an American helping respond to the outbreak in Liberia, is receiving intensive medical treatment there after he was infected with the deadly Ebola virus, a spokeswoman for aid organization Samaritan's Purse said. Brantly was in stable condition, talking with his doctors and working on his computer while receiving care, she said.
