It is no longer news that Akwa Ibom State has some of the best road networks in the country, as evidenced in the number of dualized roads with street lights in most major of them within the capital city.

This approach dubbed, ‘uncommon transformation’, is not only restricted to state roads within the capital city but also extended to federal roads, suggesting to visitors to the state that all is well as far as road network is concerned.

However, a trip through internal roads within the heart of Uyo capital city would reveal to any that behind the veil of this window dressing are very dilapidated, muddy and flooded roads, with many fast becoming unmotorable as the raining season advances.

Apparently worried over what would become of some residential areas in Uyo, a resident, Gloria Asuquo, who described the situation as “uncommon flooding” while speaking with Daily Independent, accused the present administration of rather focusing on what would attract national praise than what really solves the actual needs of Akwa Ibom people.

Asuquo, who resides in Michael Abraham Street, Uyo, one of the affected areas, pointed out that people in the area have so far counted losses of properties and other valuable items worth millions of naira, even as the rain is just starting.

Another resident, Michael Ukpe, said: “I blame this whole hardship on government because they have refused to award road contract to indigenous contractors. If a contract as simple as refuse evacuation were awarded to someone who is not from here, of what concern would dumping refuse in the gutters be to such one?

Also speaking to our correspondent, Micah Ibanga, a businessman along IBB Way, expressed concern over the rate which flood ravaged some parts of Uyo, and stressed that if the situation is not promptly addressed, the rainy season, which is yet to come full force, may seriously threaten lives and properties within Uyo.
