imsuboi: ^^ how dare you compare a common engineer to a doctor? Does an engineer deal directly with human lives??Eeeeehhh. Hold it there.let me ask you this, what is the meaning of "Do you know what it means to be a doctor"? I studied genetics at the University for 5 yrs you study human medicine for 6 yrs, what did you study at school that are super amazing than others. See everybody should be allow to reach the top of their career path. I had some courses with some of you guys in school for 3yrs peeps these guys are sooo dull than what we think they are....Throughout those years non of them were among best 7 result each semester. Come to now say they are so full of themselves right frm the school looking and treating others with disdain is irritating. Look for example, a lecturer referring to ur fellow student (because he is a medical student) as Dr. while others from other dept like mine are made subjected to those nuissance. If i shd tell you who doctors are right from school, you go they stone them 3 Likes |

excell12go: But I really do not think these demands are too high or too much. These people spent more than six years of their lives in school o...I know of someone who spent 15 years studying medicine. The sizes of the books they read alone are scary. These guys have suffered. A newly employed doctor/dentist earns less than 200K a month.Dude, pharmacist, physios, med lab scientist, lawyers e.t.c spend minimum of 6-7years before being allowed to practice too. so what's the biggie. 1 Like |

This is a dumb thread. If you want to criticize doctors that fine, but you should at least get your facts straight. The reason the doctors went on strike is because they feel they have been continually undermined by the Federal Government. This has been going on for years but the final straw that lead to the strike was the deal they signed with JOHESU (an umbrella group of paramedical staff) which raised their salaries, allowed gave certain cadres double promotions (by allowing them to skip salary steps) and worst of all, allowing them to masquerade as the equals of specialist doctors by handing them the title of consultant. It is important to note that the title of consultant has a special meaning in within a hospital that is very different from what it means outside. The government made it possible for a nurse or even a hospital admin staff to get a PhD from somewhere and start telling patients that "I'm doctor so and so, I'm your consultant". The government essentially legalized quackery by allowing unqualified people to become "senior doctors" by the back door and by doing so is introducing confusion and endangering patients. The doctors are just asking that the government reverse the more senseless concessions they gave JOHESU and restore the relativity ratio between doctors and less qualified staff by giving doctors the same salary increases JOHESU got. It makes no sense to raise increase junior people's pay without increasing that of the seniors. To do so would be to devalue the work of doctors and make the up to 8 years of post-graduate training they've had (not including the minimum 7 years to become a fully licensed doctor) worthless. Its very strange that everybody is condemning doctors for going on strike when nobody said anything about the long series of JOHESU strikes that twisted the government's arm into giving in to such ridiculous demands. If doctors feel that it's no longer worth their while to go through all the stress of going to medical school and undergoing specialist training, then its still Nigerians who will suffer. Jonathan and co won't be affected, they'll just travel abroad. |

imsuboi: ^^ how dare you compare a common engineer to a doctor? Does an engineer deal directly with human lives?? I just dey look u and in the words of someone who has taught me a lot in life"I feel sorry for you". The very practice of modern medicine is ABSOLUTELY dependent on Engineering practice from the electrical and electronic to the structural and the metallurgical aspects. If you are is as knowledgeable as you claim you would see this fact and calm down but even in the very likely scenario that you do not , closet minded as you are, I am not about to educate you on the pages of nairaland you have had uncountable years of studying (as you and your ilk like to remind us lowly borne) to learn. I will let you wallow in your small mindedness and ignorant tunnel vision. Its a brave new world out there and that world has no patience for small minded mono disciplinary individuals. They are dinosaurs whose time are at an end. In these days of pacemakers ,implants, titanium rod and steel plate bone augmentations, an ignorant "doctor" thinks that he is all that, the be all and end all. Even in the study of viruses , their effects and cure have more technical mathematical input than you doctors can wrap your puny little mind around.Think BioInformatics. "Oga doctor superior to everyone else", study those "big books" of yours that you are so proud of to find out that even the most notable medical achievement of our time GENE SEQUENCING AND MAPPING,happened as a result of the work of physicists and engineers working with biologists , doctors and others within the medical ecosystem. "Do you know how strenuous clinical medicine is?" NO I do not but I imagine,it is as strenous as the practice of engineers or geologists or physicists or even nurses. You do not get off telling anyone that you as a Doctor are superior because you save lives. For your information nurses and policemen and soldiers ,even pharmacologists and laboratory technicians save lives all in different circumstances. If you doctors in Nigeria are ever going get the rest of the society to understand your needs and your value you will have to understand the need value and sacrifice of others. "So i would advice you to shut the hell up about stuff you have no clue about & use your little brain for something worthwhile." I do use my brain for worthwhile things but you really do need to follow your own advice. 1 Like 1 Share |
