The National Conference in its final report recommended the creation of 18 additional states to bring the number of states in the country to 54. The recommendation was made by the Committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government jointly headed by Ike Nwachukwu and Mohammed Kumalia.

Initially, some Northern delegates kicked against moves to create additional states apart from the one proposed for the South-East which was overwhelmingly supported. But after series of consultations by the leadership of delegations, the Conference unanimously adopted the recommendation for the creation of additional 18 new states.

The newly approved states as seen on the map bellow include;
Apa from Benue,
Edu from Niger,
Kainji from Kebbi state
Katagum from Bauchi,
Savannah from Borno,
Amana from Adamawa,
Gurara from Kaduna,
Ghari from Kano,
Etiti from South East,
Aba from Abia,
Adada from Enugu,
Njaba from Anambra and Imo,
Oil River from Rivers state
Anioma fror Delta state,
Ogoja from Cross River State,
IJebu from Ogun State
Ose state from Edo
New Oyo State from the present Oyo State.

Do we really need new states?

I see this states being created in the year 2000 and infinity.

Is creation of states our problem. The major problem of this country is corruption and cowardice of Nigerians, until a solution is found to this the Nation will not improve or remain stagnant it will become worse.

If the creation of these states will bring about good leadership and a better Nigeria, then why not?? All we need is a better Nigeria..

For me, I think it's a good move because it's going to provide employment, bring about development and some abandoned remote villages will be reached out to as governors will have lesser towns to carter for....

This creation of new states should be based on land mass. It seems every local govt in east now have a new state. They could have address the issue of kogi and kwara states getting new states.

For some states that its people feel marginalised by the state gov't at the centre, it can't be said to be a bad idea. This will bring gov't very close to the people and this will reduce the recklesness and excuses of state gov't under the pretence of limited resources to cater for many L.G. But this development will be further appreciated if F.G sponsor a bill to reduce the over dependence of state gov't on the central gov't. State autonomy should be encourage and supported by the f.g to develop and utilize resources found within its border. With this, politics that seek free money from Abuja will automatically give way for technocrats and thinkers.

only the south east deserved an additional state, they should have just left it at the earlier proposal which was made, but greed and selfishness couldnt allow them. Anyways just create the darn states already grin
