Personally, I feel the religious extremism we're experiencing in this country today is a result of the repressive society we exist in combined with an equally hypocritically oppressive government. I remember seeing a statistic that showed Nigeria as one of the countries with the highest number of Gay porn watchers on the internet.
Now, who has access to the internet in Nigeria? The middle and upper class, but they are the same people championing incarceration of openly gay people. Just because I like girls doesn't mean every man has to like them too, but at least I should have the decency to respect their choices and orientation.

The west has always found a way of having its ways in religion. They join as adherens and with time bring in their practices and since they are now members and it is in their land, you either play ball or pay taxes like a normal company that does not want government interference. It is a bait that always works. The Church was first on the agenda and now Islam is on the menu. If the leaders can take a stand together instead of in-fighting to keep and attract more members they only need enforce whatis in the Holy Book that says if you want to be an adheren you must follow the constitution. This is how they can keep the tenets of their faith.
