Discontent and mutual mistrust is brewing among adherents of Islamic faith in Akwa Ibom over allegation by some stakeholders that Muslims in Northern Nigeria and abroad have usurped their religious rights.

The core of the controversy, as was exclusively reported recently by this paper stems from assumption by a group of Islamic faithful under the aegis of Akwa Ibom Muslims Community that they are being deprived from carrying out their religious obligations by Governor Godswill Akpabio’s aide de camp, ADC, Baba Shehudeen, whom they accused of conniving with others to marginalize Muslims residents in the state to the advantage of “foreign elements and imposters.”

Addressing newsmen over the weekend, Mohammed Al Bashir, who spoke on behalf of other aggrieved Muslims in the state, said that the Akwa Ibom Muslims Community under which platform they ventilate their grievances is pursuing the interests of all Muslims resident in the state and that the group is without any bias to one’s state of origin or nationality.

The group had recently sent a six-page letter to Akpabio asking the state government not to recognize one Alhaji Baba Jaro as the Chairman of the state’s Muslim Pilgrim Welfare Board and that one “Adamu Muhammed should be made to stop parading himself as the Chief Imam of Uyo Mosque.”

They claimed in the letter that Jaro “knows nothing about Islam” and that he was brought in by the former governor of the state, Victor Attah, without the knowledge of the Muslim community, a trend they stated has prompted Christians to make mockery of the Muslims in the state.

Making reference to the current security situation in the country, the stakeholders also called on the governor to constitute a new Muslim Pilgrim Welfare Board in liaison with “true representatives of the Muslim Ummah” in the state, advancing that that could help in checking “the influx of shady characters into the state in the name of Islam.”

They further mentioned that those to constitute the board need to be approved by the Etsu of Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar, whom they admit in the letter as “the overseeing Emir for Akwa Ibom State Muslims.”

Though they acknowledged in the letter that the present government in the state has been of “tremendous assistance both financially and materially” in giving a sense of belonging to Muslims in the state, they complained that the fortune of the faithful in the state is taking a turn for the worst.

Shehudeen, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who is said to be an indigene of Bauchi State, is, among other things, accused of using his office to elongate the purported tenure of Jaro-led Muslim Pilgrim Welfare Board, which they said his three-year tenure that started in 2007 had since elapsed.

The group further accused the governor’s ADC of selling 80 per cent of slots of those who go on pilgrimage on the state’s slot to foreigners and Muslims from Northern Nigeria.

“The situation is so bad that last year (2011), for example, only about five Muslims from Akwa Ibom State were given slots out of the over 50 seats sponsored by the state government,” the stakeholders protested in the letter.

The letter, a copy of which was made available to Daily Independent, was endorsed by representatives of five Islamic fora in the state Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Hausa Muslim Youth Council (HMYC), Jama’atu Nasril Islam, (JNI) Board of Trustees of the Uyo Central Mosque and the state chapter of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).

@bolded
1) When will our people ever learn. are there no christian policemen especially of Akwa Ibom origin that can do this job?

2) it's amazing they can use such words considering how they go to great to discriminate against people of their own states in the core north who happen to be Christians

3) Wow! in essence the Governor of Akwa Ibom should be subservient to the etsu(devil) of nupe?

4) I will like to know how many people of Akwa Ibom origin or even southerners generally have ever received such assistance from northern States except those converting to the Islamic faith

5) go to (1)

6) in essence the governor's goodwill us not getting to those it's suppose to. the ADC is basically stealing

7) I will like to know how many Christians have ever Ben sponsored by a northwest state on pilgrimage.

Guys I don't think the sponsor here means akwa ibom pays for the fare. Every state has the particular number of people it's suppose to present, which they pay with their money. The guy probably gives this slots to non indigene, that will still pay with their money. Not the state gov. money.
