Quick Highlights Of Factors That Led To The Civil War by vicadex07(m): 6:30pm On Aug 25, 2014
The causes of the Nigerian civil war could be
grouped into economic, political and social.

Economic:
Before the discovery of oil in the east, the nation' revenue had relied heavily on the groundnuts from the north. The then revenue was largely from the north, it was shared equally among all the regions. In addition, the north had political control.
However, oil discovery in the east changed things, due to economic focus shifted to the east. Due to this, the east also demanded for some political influence which the north was greatly against. This was definitely a recipe for war.

Political:
Failure of factions to compromise and cooperate to work together. Neither of the prime ministers wanted to compromise their deals to work together for a united Nigeria. Also the fact that the north received more revenue and opportunities though the east produced bulk of the revenue. The crisis in the west that came due to the fact that the elections that were held, were rigged and all laws were broken. Also, in 1966, a group of young staff members of the army under the leadership of Ironsi, staged a coup because they felt all the top nations politicians and leaders had let Nigeria down. They killed all top politicians and at the end made Ironsi the leader. Unfortunately for them, the north retaliated by opening a huge massacre of all igbos and also killed Ironsi and made Gowon the head.

The fleeing of the igbos during the massacre made them end up in the east. This again, made Ojukwu, the leader of the east ask for more demands as there was so much pressure on their facilities. But the north disagreed and this time the east decided that they were going to break themselves off Nigeria and take the oil with them. With this, the north couldn't allow as the oil gave in lots of revenue.

Social:
This was basically a combination of the different tribal groups put together and couldn't attempt to compromise together to make decisions leading to the small quarrels and arguments between them.

In summary

1) The easterners discovered oil and decided to secede whilst the economy had been majorly sustained previously by the notherners through agriculture. The notherners were obviously aggrieved at this.

2) In physics, it is said action and reaction are opposite and equal. Obviously, this was not so in this case of the civil war. Soldiers from the east launched the first coup campaign against top military officers and politicians who were mostly of nothern origin...few from the west too most notably chief Samuel Akintola, the then premier of west the western region. Within few months, nothern soldiers led a counter coup which was much deadlier than the first one. After terrible military and civilian losses, the easterners then decided to secede especially after discovering oil.

Stop lying to yourself.
The reason Lugard joined the south and north was to use revenues from the south to subsidize the north.
Yes, that word, subsidy. We north have been spoon fed for 100 years.
While the northern region's revenue mainly came from cotton, ground-nuts and tin, they kept 50% while the federal government got 50% of revenues.
The Western Region kept 50% of revenues from products like cocoa while the eastern region also kept 50% of revenues from coal, rubber, palm oil.
The value of products from the north was the least and it was no mainstay of the federal government.

When will you people stop manufacturing this lie. At no time in the history of Nigeria, was groundnut from the north the main source of income. Also income, that was tax collected from the export of groundnut was share on 50/50 derivation formula. The same applied to cocoa, palm oil, rubber, hides and skin. The regions kept 50% of the taxes they generated and the center kept 50%.

Seriously, I don't get what your point is. Before oil was discovered in the south, the north was the major economic powerhorse followed closely by the west. If that's what you meant then I guess we are still on the same page

History of the Nigerian Petroleum Industry
Oil was discovered in Nigeria in 1956 at Oloibiri in the Niger Delta after half a century of exploration. The discovery was made by Shell-BP, at the time the sole concessionaire. Nigeria joined the ranks of oil producers in 1958 when its first oil field came on stream producing 5,100 bpd. After 1960, exploration rights in onshore and offshore areas adjoining the Niger Delta were extended to other foreign companies. In 1965 the EA field was discovered by Shell in shallow water southeast of Warri.

In 1970, the end of the Biafran war coincided with the rise in the world oil price, and Nigeria was able to reap instant riches from its oil production. Nigeria joined the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1971 and established the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) in 1977, a state owned and controlled company which is a major player in both the upstream and downstream sectors.

Following the discovery of crude oil by Shell D’Arcy Petroleum, pioneer production began in 1958 from the company’s oil field in Oloibiri in the Eastern Niger Delta. By the late sixties and early seventies, Nigeria had attained a production level of over 2 million barrels of crude oil a day. Although production figures dropped in the eighties due to economic slump, 2004 saw a total rejuvenation of oil production to a record level of 2.5 million barrels per day. Current development strategies are aimed at increasing production to 4million barrels per day by the year 2010.

Petroleum production and export play a dominant role in Nigeria's economy and account for about 90% of her gross earnings. This dominant role has pushed agriculture, the traditional mainstay of the economy, from the early fifties and sixties, to the background.

Capital No. Groundnut was the major source of income for Northerners, Cocoa, Rubber, Timber and Palm oil for the Western region and Palm oil, Rubber, also some cocoa for the Eastern region. The Nigeria of 1960-1966 was run on 50% derivation, there were no free loaders.

The south or south-south wasn't really recognized politically back then. We only had three governing regions then

I'm concerned about the last straw that broke the camel's back - the coups of 1966 and Ojukwu's over ambition.

And while agricultural products were being "taxed" at 50%.
The federal govt got to keep a higher proportion of the revenue from coal.

The crux of the matter is; whether the OP was telling the truth or not; the Igbos started the massacre & coup in Nigeria due to their greed, jealousy and unbridled lust for wealth & power.

My greatest regret though is that the north ought to have wiped them out completely in order to prevent recurrence but I'm convinced it's never late since history always repeats itself and this time around, we shall ascertain if truly the Igbos are JEWISH or not & if being jewish has any advantage whatsoever in war.
