Anambra Acquires 200,000 Hectares for Agriculture

Posted by: Daniel Essiet in Agriculture August 22, 2014

The Anambra Land Acquisition Committee said it had acquired more than 200,000 hectares of land for the state government’s agricultural transformation scheme.

The Interim Chairman of the committee, Igwe Chukwuemeka Ilouno, said this in an interview in Onitsha.

He said the governor, Willie Obiano, was committed to investing massively in agriculture and had gone ahead to procure some of the needed input in furtherance of the scheme.

“We have just too many lands and more; what is holding us back now is surveyors.

“We need a lot of surveyors to come and survey the lands that had been given so that we can sign MoU (Memoranda of Understanding) with various communities that have donated land.

“Because previously these lands were never surveyed. So this is exactly the situation we are in.

“And by the time we finish surveying, the governor can have hundreds of thousands of hectares of land available for cultivation.

“We already have more than 200,000 hectares.

“The governor has just waved his hands and said any land that is donated would be cultivated.

“He has already been able to secure 150 tractors, 15 million bundles of cassava cuttings and a lot of rice seedlings and fish fingerlings.

“So, he is ready to invest in agriculture. That is what he had shown.

“It is not only him investing, he is inviting international investors, local investors to come and he will give them land to bring in whatever they have to cultivate.“

The chairman, who is also Chairman of Anambra Central Traditional Rulers Council, appealed to all communities in the state to key into the scheme to wipe out hunger, unemployment, and crime in the state

Turkish Airlines to fly Enugu International Airport

Nigeria and Turkey will on Monday sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Turkish Airline to commence operation at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, Vice President Namadi Sambo said on Thursday. Sambo said this on Thursday in Enugu during the rally organised by a group known as the Enugu Movement for the Re-election of Jonathan, .

He said that five Turkish airlines would be joining their Ethiopian counterpart, the only airline currently operating at the airport. “This is going to be a big feat because five airlines from Turkey will be departing from the airport per week. “We are going to have all the world’s airlines here because we want to make Enugu the hub of business in the aviation sector,” he said.

The Vice President said that locating the International Helicopter Flying School in the state had given it the leverage to grow in the sector. “More workers will be deployed at the helipad built by the state government and this will boost the state’s economy.” Sambo said that the Federal Government had approved the sum of N220 million for Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) in the state.

He said that the Federal Government had also put modalities in place for the establishment of a gas pipeline to generate 1,000 mega watts of electricity in Enugu state.

“We are doing everything to ensure that the state is improved in terms of power supply to support economic activities of the people here.

“The Federal Government has also concluded plans to employ 12 million Nigerians in the next eight months,” Sambo said.

Earlier, Gov Sullivan Chime pledged the support and loyalty of the government and people of the state for President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to Chime, “all we do in Enugu, we owe to the President and PDP”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that dignitaries at the event included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani and Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra.

Others are former governors of the old Anambra and Enugu states, Chief Jim Nwobodo and Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo respectively, and the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Prof. Rufai Ahmed, among others

Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo has commended Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State for building a Police Heliport for the Police Command in the state, which he described as a feat that would step up efforts of the force in providing security and protection to the citizenry and ensuring law and order in the state.
The Vice President gave this commendation Thursday in Enugu, the state capital after commissioning the Heliport that was built by the State Government.
Sambo described the commissioning as significant milestone in the fight against all forms of crimes in the country. He called on other state governors to emulate the efforts of the Enugu State governor by also embarking on similar projects that would assist the Police and other law enforcement agents in combating crime in all its ramifications.
“Today we are faced with increasing challenges of the sophistication of modern-day crimes which have become more advanced in practical terms. These new forms of crimes require extra time and effort from our law enforcement agents to effectively tackle them. Indeed this investment will go a long way in helping to curb crime through regular security surveillance and aerial patrol.” He said
The Vice President added that with the commissioning of the heliport, helicopters would be deployed to the state to assist fight crimes and criminality in the state and other states in the south-east.
He called on the Police Command to ensure proper maintenance of the facility so that it would stand the test of time while giving them assurance of Federal Government’s support at all times towards enhancing their effectiveness.
Earlier in his remarks, the host Governor, Sullivan Chime stated that the major obligation of any government constitutionally was to provide for the security and wellbeing of its citizenry.
“I am happy that today Enugu state has been able to contribute to the nation’s quest to have a secured environment. This is our contribution to your efforts.” he said.
The Enugu State Governor called on the Police command to ensure that the heliport was put to maximum use and run effectively so that it would stand the test of time.
Also in his remarks, the Minister of Police Affairs Abduljelili Adesiyan said that the heliport commissioning as auspicious as it was a strategic infrastructure and a platform for the safe-landing of helicopters on aerial surveillance operations.
He added that the project marked an important watershed in the cooperation of the states with the federal government in the provision of critical infrastructure for the Nigerian Police Force and has opened a safe conduit for aerial surveillance operations of the Nigerian Police Force in Enugu State and in other south-eastern states.
According to the Minister, the project was in line with the reform agenda of the Federal Government for the Police force under the Transformation Agenda of the President.

He added that the present administration of President Goodluck Jonathan on the assumption of office in 2010, gave impetus to the reform agenda of the Nigerian Police Force with the approval of the implementation plan of the agenda.
“The implementation plan emphasizes partnership of the three tiers of government as well as added support of the private sector in the reform of Nigerian Police Force for effective an efficient security service delivery.” he said

He further stat that the present administration has provided over N100billion towards the implementation of the reform programme of the Nigerian Police Force. He however said that the enormous investment required in the provision of security for the citizens and the rather large and challenging geographical landscape of the country necessitated the need for constructive engagement with all stakeholders.
“In august 2013, through the instrumentality of the National Economic Council, governments commitment to supporting the funding of Nigerian Police Force in practical and organized manner because of the partnership was the consensus that the support of state government would be applied to execute projects of the Nigerian Police Force in their respective states.” He said
Abduljelili Adesiyan added that today’s commissioning of the helicopter landing port otherwise known as heliport was a landmark record in the partnership of Enugu state with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
He thanked the governor of Enugu State for his demonstration of an uncommon support for Nigerian Police force while also inviting other states of the federation to emulate the commendable initiative of Enugu State in order to enhance the security of life and property in the country while assuring the Governor of the effective utilization of the facility by the Nigerian Police Force in strengthening aerial security operations in the state and the nation.
The Vice President was accompanied by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Minister of Power Prof. Chinedu Nebo and the Special Adviser Political to the President Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali amongst others.

Anambra Signs MoU with Ekcel Farm for Tomato, Cassava Production

By COSMAS OMEGOH, Awka on September 30, 2014 · National

Anambra State Government yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an indigenous organisation, Ekcel Frams Limited, for the production of tomato and cassava. It was gathered that the undertaking would provide no fewer than 5,300 jobs in the first phase of its take off.

This development came on the heels of similar understanding between the state government and Joseph’s Farms on September 18, 2014 for rice production under the watch of Chief Willie Obiano.

Governor Obiano signed on behalf of the state government while oil magnate, Sir Emeka Okwuosa, chairman of Oil Serve Group, signed for Ekcel Farms, in Government House, Awka.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by some of the state commissioners including the former managing director of The Sun Publishing Limited, Mr. Tony Oyima, who is the Commissioner for Information, among others.

Also present were representatives of African Development Bank (ADB), Fidelity Bank Plc, an Italian company, Osterade Engineering and Manufacturing Company that will drive the initiative as well as prominent businessmen in the state like Chief Innocent Chukwuma of Innoson Motors and Dr. Ifeanyi Okoyoe of Jwell Phamacy.

In his remarks, Okwuosa said he was coming home to farm “in an industrial manner” not to make money but to set up factories to produce tomato and cassava with a view to creating jobs.

“We look forward to producing 250 tons of tomato and 400 tons of cassava when we start. For that to happen, we are hoping to employ 3,500 persons directly and 1,800 persons indirectly.

“The intention is not just to cultivate cassava but to encourage farmers to go into cooperatives and produce cassava so that we can buy from them,” Okwuosa said.

According to him, he intended to set up a model agricultural venture in the state and requested for enabling environment and infrastructure such as electricity, although he assured that his orgnisation would generate electricity from gas.

Responding, Governor Obiano thanked Okwuosa for his initiative, stating that he was a man of strong commitment.

“I have known Sir Okuosa for a long time. Nothing he puts his mind on goes bad. I am happy that he is ‘thinking home’. We have repositioned security in Anambra State. This is an opportunity for investors to come here and invest,” the governor said.

He noted that as part of his commitment to attract investors to the state, his administration would give investors certificate of occupancy (C of O) just in four days, saying: “We want to make Anambra State a place everyone can do business.”

Speaking to newsmen, Okuosa said he was encouraged by the governor’s gesture, noting that it was a clear invitation to him and others to come home and invest. He said the signing of the MoU was a giant step towards making Anambra State better.

Expressing optimism that when the industry finally took off, security challenges in the state would be drastically reduced, ha said there would only be calm in the state if people were provided with jobs.

He said that was one area through which he wanted to contribute his quota to the development of the state, insisting that the effort was not to make money.

2013 Harvest: Surplus Food In Imo State

Mon, Nov 18, 2013

In the South-east, particularly in Imo State, the people are predominantly farmers. The pattern of agricultural production in the state vary from one area to the other as areas like Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta, Oru West, Oru East and Owerri local government areas among others that are oil producing areas, have different pattern of agricultural production compared to non oil producing areas of the state like Okigwe for topographical reasons.

Generally, 2013 wet season harvest has been very good in the state especially the high yield recorded on the three major crops that are commonly produced in the state which include cassava, yam and plantain. Evidence of good harvest could be seen in the large quantities of these crops in the market. A visit to all the markets in the state will certainly prove that there is abundant food and cash crops in the state. At Eke Umuagwo and Afor Umuapu markets in Ohaji/Egbema local government areas of the state visited by this reporter, there were different types of crops produced by farmers in the area.

A plantain farmer in Ilile Community in Ohaji/Egbema local government area, Mr. Monday Nwosu, said he has been in the business of farming and marketing crops and had noticed that there is high yield this year.

Mrs Roseline Eke, a cassava farmer, said cassava has become a major source of income and on each market day, she uproots cassava from her farm and takes to the market for sale. At the Orie Ogbaku market in Mbaitoli local government area, lots of people go to the market to buy and sell farm produce such as garri, cassava, yam, vegetables, waterleaves, plantain, banana, pineapple among others.

A yam farmer, Obi Udoka, said there are different categories of yam in the market which include yams from the north, Abakaliki and those from other parts of the state, adding, “A lot of buyers come from within and outside the state to patronize us.”
Mrs. Florence Nwaka expressed happiness over the good harvest recorded in the state, saying she has succeeded in having large quantities of cassava and yams from her farm.

Abia begins distribution of 600,000 cocoa seedlings to farmers

September 27, 2014 | Filed under: Agricultural Business,Breaking News | Author: Editor
Tweet 1

Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia on Friday inaugurated the 2014 free distribution of 600,000 improved cocoa seedlings to farmers in the state.

Orji said at a brief ceremony held at Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, that the distribution of seedlings was part of government’s initiatives to reposition cocoa production in the state.

He said that the measure was geared toward making cocoa one of the mainstay of the state’s economy.

The governor said a monitoring team would be inaugurated to supervise the effective utilisation of the seedlings by the farmers to ensure higher productivity.

“I want Abia to occupy a leading position in cocoa production in Nigeria in the next few years,’’ he said.

Orji said the good features of the seedlings included their early maturing and high yielding prospects.

He said other efforts aimed at increasing agricultural production in the state included the recent N2 billion Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) facility for agro-based small-scale industrialists in the state.

He recalled that the 2012 CBN facility of N1 billion disbursement to farmers in the state was to encourage farmers and ensure food security.

The governor said that the Liberation Farms, set up in each of the three senatorial districts of the state had helped to train farmers in modern farming techniques and gave the assurance that government would continue to train and retrain farmers to ensure value addition to their produce.

He urged the people of the state to ‘’go back to land,’’ warning that although the nation’s oil wells would one day dry up, ‘’agriculture will never dry up’’.

Orji urged cocoa farmers to be more committed and not to allow cocoa farming to die, given its huge prospects in the transformation of the economy of the farmer, the state and nation.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Chijioke Onwutuebe, said distribution of free seedlings by the government started in 2012 with 350,000 seedlings.

Onwutuebe said the number was increased to 450,000 in 2013 and urged cocoa farmers to take advantage of the opportunity to improve their fortune.

Mr Sam Odoemelam, the Director of Agriculture in charge of the state-wide development of agriculture, said
the Ministry of Agriculture would intensify efforts to increase the state’s capacity in cocoa production.

Odoemelam listed the five major cocoa producing local government areas of the state as Bende, Ikwuano, Arochukwu, Umuahia South and Ohafia.

Why are you so annoyed, by the prospect?

If there are subsistance farmers in Igboland, then the soil can produce food, right?

Unless of course you are saying that there are no subsistance farming in the SE?

Even if they have to improve soil quality they can. Jos suffers from soil erosion, yet they have fertile land and produce very good produce.

Let SE try and be at least self sufficent.

I just don't get why you sound so annoyed and even angry about it. Dubai was also built in the desert as well as Eko Atlantic City, which is being built on reclaimed land from the sea. I'm sure the plans were criticised at some point also.

This is 2014, where soil erosion can be dealt with.

On his part, the visiting ambassador assured the governor and the people of the state that the Thailand Business Community would support the government in its developmental schemes, especially in the agriculture sector. He said Thailand will be willing to provide skills and technical assistance to the state in diverse agricultural activities.

I don't blame you. Y0rigba land is a big slum where pigs cannot survive. Igbo land is blessed.

Below are some pictures of yoruba land
Maybe it is a slum that has been discussed severally on Nairaland with those who are your coevals mentally.

The issue here is food production. The SW is miles ahead of the SE in this regard. The land in the SE is barren and cursed. We all know this
Coming to tell all kind of juvenile lies changes nothing
Apart from the cursed land.Eboes do not believe in hard work but prefer to get rich quick through all manner of crime and deception. The Eboes see farmers as magas

I am annoyed at the LIES because these same people go abroad and continue to lie giving us all a bad name. All the Negative publicity we suffer is probably down to these folk
