Okorocha Extends Free Education To Non Indigenes In Imo State University: Announces Absolute Free Education To Students

Determined to give every child in Nigeria access to free and qualitative education, the Imo state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has today, September23, 2014 declared absolute free education to indigenes and non indigenes studying in Imo State University.

Governor Okorocha announced this during the commissioning ceremony of N150m Ultra Modern Owunna Recreation Park at the University campus Owerri.

Owelle Okorocha stressed the need to encourage the present generation to do better than the past generation and urged the students to reciprocate the gesture by imbibing a progressive spirit.

He further called on the school authorities to stop forthwith the collection of N50,000 acceptance fee and warned lecturers against the sale of handouts, while insisting that all books must be sold through the bookshops.

The Governor however pointed out that government will not be involved in certain charges like students’ Identity Cards, medicals, text books and other departmental charges. He therefore appealed to the academic staff to be modest and adhere strictly to the directives.

While promising to elevate the image of the University, Governor Okoroccha urged the students to develop passion for education and advised them to refrain from cultism and indecent dressing especially as the nation is yearning for leaders with good conduct in both learning and character.

He commended the Pro-Chancellor, Mazi Clement Owunna and the University Governing Council for their personal sacrifices made towards the development of the institution.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof Uba Nnabue, noted the Imo State University has witnessed remarkable level of infrastructural development within the past three years of the Rescue Mission administration.

He called on the staff and students of the University to support the government in its efforts to promote education in the State.

Earlier in his address, the Vice Chancellor of Imo State University, Prof Ukach Awuzie, stated that the recreation park was constructed and funded by the Pro-Chancellor, Mazi Clement Owunna through his Chief Peter Sunday Owunna Memorial Foundation (CPSOMF) and donated to the institution.

He described the park as the first of its kind in the country tailored to suit the needs of the staff and students alike and commended him for attracting numerous projects to the institution as the chairman of the Governing Council of Imo State University.

Handing over the project, donor and Pro-Chancellor of the Universty, Mazi Clement Owunna said the Board of Trustees of his Foundation conceptualized and developed the Recreation Park which stood to tune of N150m to create an environment that would impact positively on the students staff as well as add dynamism to the University ambience and environment.

He thanked Governor Okorocha for the support given to the University which has translated into the development of physical infrastructural at both the Owerri and Orlu campuses.

n the time of Dee Sam Mbakwe, the Imo state and former Bendel state were undisputably the champions in education. Today, the reverse is the case, especially for Imo. Free education is a good thing. But what is even of even greater importance is QUALITY education.

When people are offered "free education" while there are no functional university laboratories in the school, the buildings are derelict looking like glorified primary school classrooms, the campus roads are in an appalling state and worst of all, the lecturers are underpaid and even owed, then you can see why the so called "free education" isn't the only priority. Infact, it is a political gimmick by those who donot give a hoot about education, but are planning their political future as 2015 elections approaches.

Imo is actually not lagging behind in the numbers of school children or graduates like we have in some northern states.
[size=15pt]The problem in Imo is that the QUALITY HAS FALLEN AND WE MUST RESTORE IMO STATE TO THE NUMBER ONE POSITION IN QUALITY OF EDUCATION.

That is where the focus ought to be!

Who is the "they"? Person buy beer for you with him own money, you de criticize am say him for use the money buy you shoe, instead of show appreciation. Please don't be an ingrate. The Donors weren't elected by Imolites nor was Imo public money spent. It was pure donations.

You have the right to tell your governor what to do, quality education is non negotiable, but criticising him based on this project done by a donor is uncalled for

Okorocha is a great man and it is very unhealthy for Igbos to engage in falsehood in order to claim he is not one of the best in Nigerian history. One of his initial major attempts was relocating IMSU to a rural area which befits an academic institution rather than being at the heart of a city but PDP sponsored a stiff resistance and he had to yield. That notwithstanding, IMSU has changed greatly in the past 3 years as evidenced from Chino's pictures. Chino's pictures shows how things were before and a revisit today will surprise him.

Okorosha is a failure despite over 200billion he accumulated as loan. Now tell us what is the state of health, education, infrastructure, employment generation etc today in Imo state? The condition of IMSU has got bad beyond that pix up there, if not post the current pix. IMSUTH is another disaster. Who are the masses to stop govt plan to relocate the state university to a good site? The gov was never interested in genuine development of the state. Simple!
