oneeast3: Nah! Anambra's economy is not a seasonal one, it can be for such other civil servant's states but not Anambra..

Like as I said, Anambra has the biggest economy in Nigeria after Lagos and Rivers.

These states has something in common- huge economy that is buoyed by huge economic activities.

Besides Anambra having 4th largest population after Lagos, Rivers and Kano

, it equally has a very high boisterous middle class and super rich class in it's society.

That explains why Anambra is building 3 malls and two 5 star facilities simultaneously in its 3 major cities..

1st bolded, do you have data to back that up or you pulled it out of your anal orifice?

2nd bolded, LIES. Try harder. Anambra is not even in top 5. Google is your friend.

3rd bolded, you do realise that all those three cities still wouldn't add up to one single city in other places right?

Anyway, continue....

Does he know that the same Anambra is the 3rd largest cash mobilization state in the country after Lagos and Rivers?

If only he knows that, then he will understand how much money that is in the state.

Lies @ bolded.

I'm not an economist, I go by common sense and experience.

The primary and most important factor in guaging economies intrinsically, is the living population. Living population isnclude humans, plants and animals(as farms or livestock). If you have these, you can not only grow an economy, you can more importantly, sustain it.

Therefore all what intelligent economies do is to do what will make people come over. Or do things with their land to improve planting and rearing (basically).

Dubai was built with the aim of attracting people to stay there on the short, medium to long term. To make this happen they used what they had, arid land and loads of money. Massive constructions, attracting thousands immediately, ensured the place would be needing everything we are discussing here immediately. But to make sure the projects were not pipe dreams after the constructions were over that needed to make sure those structure were put to use and /or continue building other structures. That is why Dubai is being sold as a tourist destination, probably harder that other places. They are still having their issues, many building s are still empty without buyers.

Coming to anambra, I'm using anambra because chino had limited the scope-many indigenes don't stay at home. Nothing is really out of the ordinary that forces Igbo to actually go home. The east is not very strong on land availability so farming and livestock management is limited. What is left for its sustenance is its people, actually staying there.

What can make people come and stay is continuous large scale industrialisation or large scale construction or large scale value chained agriculture. The last has limitations as I mentioned above but the first two are possible- with a unifying factor.

Someone said the igbo are cuturaly and religiously homogeneous. I beg to disagree. Igbos are homogeneous only when expedient. The mist homogenous Igbo group is the individual family unit, every other group is an alliance of expedience. I know many will disagree and go emotional but looking in, that's the picture. The pull of whichever alliance an Igbo is in is quite strong as he tries to out his energy into the project. If Igbo can get a good leader to rally round- one trusted and respected by other ethnic groups, they will truly be unstoppable.

Right now they are not decided yet or should I say, they don't have a clear thought out plan for sustainable development. Hotels and malls are good, but those are supposed to serve the people who are already attracted/attached to the place.

Ibadan has all what anambra has but ibadan's selling point is its proximity to Lagos and a cheaper alternative. What does anambra have to sway a rich lagosian?

Finally. Discussions I expect here include a high speed train connecting the east to the west and middle belt. So that it becomes easier to take a trip east for omugo or a fishing festival. To take electronic locally made aba shoes to the north etc.

The best bet for a sustainable east is in coorooration with other parts, through an articulate trusted intelligent leader.

Shalom

PS. Typing from a phone. Excuse any errors.
@Semitunde. Nice points you have there even as I beg to differ on some points.Anytime you are tempted to conduct a comparative analysis between the east and other regions, never forget that just barely 4 decades ago, that region was a pile of rubbles and a wasteland ravaged by missiles and on the throes of human and material waste after the civil war. Aside Animal husbandry, specifically cattle rearing, the east has the potentialities to sustain itself in food production.I recall my Dad telling me about M.I Okpara's agric revolution via farm serllement schemes. And specifically, the faculty of Agriculture in UNN once supplied all the chicken protein consumed in the entire region.Ebonyi state alone is an sleeping sub-regional food hub. The difference between Onitsha and Aba from Kano,Lagos and PH is that while the latter cities draw their strenghts from Govt intervention and interplay of centripedal and centrifugal forces, the two eastern cities where wholly indegenious: grown, built, sustained and developed by the sheer efforts of the locals.Lagos and co have all the full compliments of key governemnt investments that drive growth and development. Talking about a cordinated development plan anchored on the directives of a unified leadership, the little history I know so far showed that Igbos were never cordinated as such yet never lacked direction. The existence of a competve, individualistic yet communal worldview always provide a rallying/united point.Unfortunately,we always gloss over the effects of the civil war vis the current Igbo predicament. The war displaced the Igbos economically, destroyed the socio-cultural superstructure and the recovery has not been as fast as expected. The current rennaissance of Pan-Igboism is merely a gradual attempt to revival. I dare say that the focus of the different active state govts in the region(Anambra,Enugu,Imo and Abia) was on leveraging on their individual strenghts.Your postulations for a functional rail line is apt and long over due while I dare add that the existence of a functional seaport anywhere within 50 kilometers from either Onitsha or ABa will boost their potentials excessively. Damn any typo error too.Typing with phone+on my way to work.

But there lies the advantage. You guys have the opportunity to actually rebuild using the most modern amenities without being pulled back by cultural or historical sentiments a la Ibadan.

Most countries having the latest structures or amenities had to rebuild after a war like situation. Check them all out. I guess even some southwest states might be forcing the issue of burnt markets as means to an end. Its best to rebuild after ruin, it can be even cheaper than renovation/rehabilitation.

The other regions may not have borne the brunt of the war like the east but they also became victims of immediate migration of easterners. This had impact on their social amenities, and for the west who were practicing a pseudo socialist type of government had to now take care of a lot more people on health, education etc; apart from maintaining roads more frequently and having to deal with more waste and refuse. II'm not sure the west actually succeeded in dealing effectively with that.

The east have the opportunity to make all their social amenities of good quality and in good quantity enough to take care of Igbo and even other visitors and migrants to the east; if it hopes to have a sustained development.

I'm into construction I know a thing or two about this. The roads in most pictures in the east are as good as the use, not yet due to the quality of the works done on it. It when you have trailers constantly plying roads made for keke napep and motorcycle that you'd know if your govt is serious or not. If they are going to make some roads just for private cars in an east where each man considers himself a big man might be a challenge.

There's a case on the Lagos house of assembly about a man building a petroleum tank farm within Ikeja GRA!! You will have many of those to grapple with as many are used to exploiting infrastructure than maintaining them.

I had said repeatedly that the biggest challenge for Igbo, asides getting a trusted leader is how to create an enabling environment to take care of a sudden surge in population. All aspects of governance, including policy making, will have to become sharper and more proactive. Many Igbo take this lightly.

oneeast3: You got it all wrong on the resident population. Anambra is the most cosmopolitan state in the SE today. Am very much aware that resident population in Anambra will not be anything less than 7million if not up to 10million today. Yes, I mean resident population including visitors and their host. Just like Lagos or Rivers economy is not dominated by only Lagos indigenes or Rivers indigenes, it is the same way Anambra economy is not dominated by only Anambrans only, though they own good proportion of it. The population has even grown bigger due to returnees from the north and other parts of the country where where there is Boko Haram menace.

I seriously doubt your population theory chino. Anambra, compared Enugu for instance is not even yet ready for an upsurge in resident population. Not at present.

Not taking away the fact that these comparatively modern malls and hotels are a good development, but I, and I believe millions of SE folks am a lot more keen on a region where our governors can come together and GENUINELY work towards an all-encompassing regional industrialization and integration plan. We have the human resources to drive this -both within the region and in the diaspora ..all we need are visionary leaders who not only have the interests of their respective states but that of the region at heart. The last SE Economic Forum which had in attendance govt officials, captains of industry, SE professionals both in naija and the diaspora etc -held two or three years ago in Enugu threw up brilliant ideas on "what to do" and actually conceived a brilliant road-map on "how to go about it". Sadly fast-forward a few years later, nothing has been done. Prolly all down the drain as usual. Now this is our folly as a people and in fact as a country (ie so so talk talk brilliant idea everywhr yet implementation na anoda tori altogether). We must leverage on our strengths in order to make up for weakenesses. So many areas to look into but I'd highlight that of "Power" -the country's single biggest challenge right now as it concerns the SE for instance.
We can nevr reach our potentials re: industrialization w/o reliable power. IT IS TIME TO STOP HOPING ON FG TO FIX THIS as it is now clear that the possibility of such happening especially in the near future is 0. SE govs must synergise in finding/attracting competent investors of excellent repute. You can then contract them under a PPP arrangement to
- construct a coal-fired plant in enugu to not only serve immediate environs but also industrial hubs within a few kilometers -ie Onitcha and Nnewi which are just bout 2hours away as a readily available alternative to the unreliable national power grid. Once we can solve this problem, I bet they'd be a positive chain-effect.
- construct a green energy producing plant at Aba (powered by the high volume of biodegradable waste generated in that densely populated city every day) to serve that axis -again as an alternative to the unreliable natl grid. Etcc

@Semitunde. When you insinuate that the West,by accomodating the easterners on the throes of civil war migration actually bore a huge cost, you are unmindful that the immigrants actually were creating value and wealth in the new locality and remitting same via taxes and consumption expenditure hence the accepting society(West) are on the gaining side. And when u posit that the aftermath of the civil war presented the east with an opportunity to build solid structures from the scratch, then it is obvious you forgot the policy thrust of the federal government immediately after the war vis 20 pounds policy, indegenisation decree, abandoned property, decimation of the active and skilled human resouces of the Igbos in a gruesome war not to talk of their properties looted and the trauma of defeat. standupguy:

Hotels have always been a boom in the south east, hotels are a low risk and low employment investments which mostly owned by individuals.
What we need more in the south east is industrialization and capital commerce which will reduce migration.
Electric Power is the root of our unemployment in this country, with power we can easily harness our environment to produce whatever we need, thereby increasing industrialization, reducing importation and increasing employment.

Bro south/east is developing fast , some of you lack information and hardly travel out side your domain, for example we have big industries in Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Imo Asaba and Ebonyi. The ones that I can remember in Anambra are:

Onitsha industries
SAB miller
Orange drugs
Krisoral group of companies
Emzor pharmacetical
Swiss Pharma
Markson Chemical industry
Bentraco group of companies
Onitsha cotton mill
Reliable steel and plastic industry
Zubies biscuit and Osas Ice cream Ogidi
KP Pharma etc.

Nnewi industries
Innoson motors
Chicason group, ie AZ oil
Dozzy oil
Tonnymas (Nneni)
Ibeto group
Coscharies
Tommy Tommy food and beverage makers of Tommy tommy noodles.
Cutix wire and cable etc.

Awka industries
Millennium industry
JUHEL Pharma
Niemeth.building the big pharmacetical plant in Nigeria. Etc.

Anam
Cochad farm
Omor rice processing plant

Aguleri
Orient refinary

Ozubulu industrial estate
We have some companies under construction ie.
Distail beverage from south africa makers of vintage wine etc. We also have industries in Obosi and Nkpor
So brothers the future is bright for our people.

And Imo State setting the pace as Entrade (German waste to energy firm) moves to Imo

ENTRADE Energiesysteme AG has received a major order for the establishment of a state-wide energy and waste management system from Imo State, a statement said on Monday.

Under the agreement, which has been concluded with  Governor Rochas Okorocha, ENTRADE will initially set up 200 energy and recycling stations in the state capital, Owerri. This part of the planned project is to be completed by the end of 2015, followed by the optional construction of up to 2,300 further regional supply centres throughout the entire state. ENTRADE will operate these centres itself, both processing waste and then selling the electricity which is generated.

The aim is to build up a comprehensive power-supply network, based on the micro biomass generators developed by ENTRADE with an individual electrical output of 20 kW. These are to be fuelled mainly with bamboo pellets.

“This fast-growing raw material could for the most part solve our current power-supply problems”, Prof. Okee Okoro from the state’s Ministry of Energy and the Environment said.

“This pioneering project is therefore highly significant not only for our federal state but for the entire country of Nigeria.”

Not just Aba but the entire Nigeria. The beauty of it is that State Government will not pay the investors but they make profits from managing waste and converting same to energy. If the 1st phase in Owerri succeeds, Entrade will experience a revolutionary boom across Nigeria. Their shares in Germany is sold out.

Shifting investment focus favours Nigeria’s oil-rich southern region

Away from Lagos, real estate investment focus is gradually shifting to the oil-rich southern part of Nigeria where investors say they see untapped opportunities with high investment yield.

Conventional real estate investors and new market players are in  places like Port Harcourt, Delta, and Owerri which have emerged new investment destinations for both residential and commercial developments.

A close look at the axis in recent time reveals intents by developers such as Taf Nigeria Homes Limited, developers of Golf Estate, GTRich Investment, promoters of Lekki Gardens among others to offer the Garden City of Port Harcourt uptown apartments at their respective estates.

At the commercial segment, Resilient Africa, a property development and investment company is set to deliver retail malls in Delta,  Owerri and Asaba, all aimed at offering the growing middle class new shopping experience. Simiarly, Anambra State government and African Capital Alliance will, by end of 2015, deliver the 15,000 square metre Onitsha Mall which is still under construction.

django now read to your satisfaction. Do you see why I told you that Anambra ranks 3rd economically and otherwise in Nigeria? Deposits in Anambra is even higher than the oil rich Rivers state according to CBN. Anambra equally ranks 4th in terms of bank presence in the whole country. What does all that mean to you? cool

The Central Bank of Nigeria has rated the economy of Anambra State as among the strongest in the country.

The Branch Manager of the bank in Awka, Mr. Okoro Azubuike, announced the rating in Awka on Thursday when he received the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, who was on the good governance tour of the state.

Azubuike said deposit mobilisation in Anambra state was third in the country behind Lagos and Kano, while it ranked fourth in terms of the presence of commercial and microfinance banks.

He said the commercial cities of Onitsha and Nnewi were large and had made the state the commercial base of the South East region.

In his remarks, Governor Peter Obi said the bank was crucial to the commercial activities of the state, adding that the government had resolved to fast-track the construction of its permanent office in the state.

Anambra has the biggest economy in Nigeria after Lagos, River and may be Kano. Look at the CBN report above and you will see where the bulk of capital resources are headed..

Anambra is the most cosmopolitan state in the SE thereby has the largest population in the region making it the most populous state in Nigeria after Lagos, Rivers and Kano. You can take that to the bank.. cool

I don't have time for unnecessary back and forth..

django1:

1st bolded, do you have data to back that up or you pulled it out of your anal orifice?

2nd bolded, LIES. Try harder. Anambra is not even in top 5. Google is your friend.

3rd bolded, you do realise that all those three cities still wouldn't add up to one single city in other places right?

Anyway, continue....

Chino in a bid to glorify your State you make some fallacious errors that even a nursery pupil could spot. Abia is by far the most cosmopolitan State in the Southeast. In fact there is a town known as Umuchieze that lies between Okigwe and Enugu having 30,000 Northerners. Settlements of people of diverse ethnic background like Efik, Ibibio, Yoruba, Hausa, Camerounians, Togolese, Beninoise, Liberians, Jamaicans etc is much more common in Aba than other Igbo towns.

Anambra is the most populous Statein the Southeast because a slight majority of Central Igbo is within its boundaries. There has not been major migrations like the case of Abia. Anambra and Imo are the most populous as a result of continuous ancient settlement and population increase. Majority of people in both States are by far natives of the respective States while Abia has very high population of Anambra and Imo natives that moved there.

This is why I usually fall out with you. I am not glorifying anything but saying the fact. Did I quote you? All what you have written below is gibberish and cannot fly.. cool

I have said my own based on the facts and figures available to me, why not say your own without joining issues with me or even quoting me?

Anambra is the most cosmopolitan and most populous state in the SE. Anambra has the highest population of people from other tribes, foreigners and other Igbo states alike. You can take that to the bank..

Retail business in the eastern part of Nigeria is in upward momentum as African Capital Alliance (ACA), a leading private equity investment firm in Nigeria, in collaboration with Anambra State Government are perfecting arrangements to open a retail mall in Onitsha by the second quarter of 2015.

Known as Onitsha Mall, the retail outlet which would be anchored by Shoprite, a well known South African retail brand that currently dominates retail business in Nigeria, will contain about 51 stores of various sizes. Construction work on the mall has reached 64 percent completion and would be 100 percent completed before the proposed opening date of 2015.

Research has shown that Onitsha is the fifth fastest growing city in the world with the biggest market in West Africa known as ‘Onitsha Main Market’. It is the economic nerve centre and the gateway to the eastern part of Nigeria. It is known to be a major commercial city in the South-East Nigeria, and according to the promoters of the mall, these were part of the reasons they chose to situate the multi-million naira project in Onitsha.

Also, Onitsha Mall will offer a serene shopping experience to retailers and customers with features such as 12,100 square meters of net lettable space; 24 hours electricity and security; over 500 parking bays; six local and international restaurants; central air conditioning; ATM gallery and an average of five stores reserved for banks.

According to the developer, the lucrative business environment, which provides huge investment opportunities for investors, is another major reason for building Onitsha Mall that would be the first of its kind in the city.

Obi Nwogugu, representative of African Capital Alliance, told those who attended the 0nitsha Mall Retailers Forum held in Lagos recently that the vision of Anambra State government and ACA for the Onitsha Mall was to build an infrastructure that would attract private capital into the state.

Nwogugu, who noted that Anambra State was ranked second in telecommunications disposable income and highest in commercial and microfinance banks branches in the Eastern Nigeria, also said that the city recently attracted investment worth $120 million from South African Breweries, which is currently planning to double its investment due to the success of the business.

“Onitsha Mall is a development project sponsored by African Capital Alliance and the Anambra State Government while Diamond Bank is the debt financier of the project. In terms of safety of lives and property, the state has recently received a significant investment in security equipment and personnel in the city, which created an enabling environment for business to thrive,” Nwogugu added.

Explaining the basis for the construction work, Chuka Okoye, project manager, Pro-M Limited, who stated that the construction work currently being handled by Akiota Works Limited, which took over from the former contractor, Technics Construction Company, assured that the project would be completed before the opening date of May 2015.

He slated February 1, 2015 as the proposed date for all the tenants to start occupying their spaces as the beneficial occupation shall be granted to tenants to commence their shop fit-outs, which is expected to take 30 to 60 days before the opening date.

The mall, which would be managed by Broll Nigeria Limited on completion, is located at the old Anambra Broadcasting building at Park Street, off Awka Road in Onitsha. The road leading to Park Street has been dualised and resurfaced with traffic lights by the state government to accommodate the volume of human and vehicular traffic on the road at the take-off of the mall,” Okoye explained.
