Where is the so called Zmapp when it is needed?

Very immature behaviour from the mods for the choice of the thread's title. The thinly veiled gloat that is the sense behind this thread is the reason why many people will be wondering why success eludes them despite their apparent efforts.

These Liberians are just plain wicked! They come in contact with their Ebola relatives, then leave the country for another, hoping to get better treatment and yet refuse to own up until it's too late

This man helped his sister who had Ebola to the hospital just days before he traveled to the US. He got sick and went to a hospital without mentioning his travel history to them so they gave him antibiotics and he left. It was when he got really sick that he was tested for Ebola which came out positive.

Now that he has put a lot of people in danger, I hope he's happy.

And it's completely pointless and inhumane that some of you are happy about this. That it's the US doesn't make them immune to Ebola, it was only a matter of time before they record a case....and until they're more serious with their restrictions to people travelling from Countries with Ebola, same would apply to countries all over the world.

Well, all the Americans need to do is simple

1.Isolate all contacts.....done.

2.Strong supportive treatment for the ill patient....done.

3.Education, education....in progress.

And Uganda and even Nigeria have shown the way. Here is how Uganda did it...

The outbreaks in these countries are bad currently, but for the future, we can look at Uganda as a model. The first outbreak in that country, beginning in 2000, resulted in 425 cases and 224 deaths. The second outbreak in 2008 resulted in 149 cases and 37 deaths. In 2011, they had a single case with no secondary spread. In 2012, 11 cases and 4 deaths. 2012, 6 cases and 3 deaths. It’s probably impossible to stop Ebola from spilling over into the human population, but Uganda has done a great job responding. They are able to do early detection of suspected cases in their biosafety level 4 lab in Gulu. They alert local authorities if something is suspected, then send a task force to assist with containment. They communicate effectively with the public about what they can do, and how effective treatment in hospitals can lower the mortality rate. They work with community leaders when a quarantine needs to be put in place. These things can all be employed in West Africa as well, but it takes time and a lot of commitment to get such networks up and running. We need this cooperation as much as we need PPE and even more than we need “secret serums,” because it is only with prevention of new cases that this epidemic will finally die out.


For Nigeria, while we can be proud of our Ebola response....we must at the same time realize that we could have been decimated severely. Therefore,it is high time we increased health care spending, reduced costs by making all tertiary hospitals public private initiatives, and promoting effective public health initiatives....as well as training more medical professionals.

Actually to be fair to them even though I travelled while Ebola was in Nigeria they didn't test Nigerians or other Africans and thy didn't treat us any differently from other travelers. In fact Obama is receiving a lot of hate for allowing in flights from Africa and not testing us

In America....research is ongoing to produce vaccines and cures for Ebola.And don't forget the millions of dollars in aid the US gives to Africa...including for health care, as well as the American medics , working with NGO's and religious bodies, that are at the frontlines in the Ebola battle.

Rather than accuse America, ask your self why Nigeria cannot do good research for Ebola, why we do not have enough health care staff,and why health care is not properly funded.

1.Zmapp is not proven to work. So far, it has been tried on seven people. One died. One of the suriviors also got an infusion of serum from a Liberian Ebola surivior.

2.And there are some difficulties with getting the drug out for use...

1. The drug has only been made for lab tests so far – not for countering an epidemic

Less than 100 doses of the drug are currently available. So far the ZMapp serum has only been manufactured in quantities suitable for small-scale tests – most recently on 20 monkeys.

However, it is effective – in limited animal tests so far ZMapp has been successful. When administered to monkeys one hour after infection, all animals survived. Two-thirds of the animals were protected even when the ZMapp treatment was administered 48 hours after infection.

2. ZMapp is made by a small San Diego pharmaceutical company, with only 9 employees

Mapp has only nine employees – to put that into perspective, pharma giant Pfizer has 78,000. Mapp just doesn’t immediately have the capacity to scale up.

“The manufacturer has been planning for phase 1 clinical trials and does not have the capacity to manufacture large quantities of the treatment,” says the US Center for Disease Control.
3. It’s not just a case of mixing some chemicals together

More importantly, making ZMapp is not a case of swirling some chemicals together in a test-tube. The monoclonal antibodies in ZMapp have to be produced from specially-grown and harvested cells.

It is also sad that you won't blame Nigerian governments, past and present for poorly funding educaiton and scientific research....as well as developing our economy into an industrial superpower...which would have helped us fight Ebola better.

Stop blaming the whites. Blame we Nigerians...we could have done better, all of us.

Well, the man's sister was also pregnant, and had convulsed on the day she was taken to hospital....symptoms that are consistent with Eclampsia....as well as severe malaria.So, it is possible he left the country not knowing what his sister died from...(and indeed, a lot of the symptoms seen in Ebola are also seen in other conditions too.)
