There is this notion (in academics) that reading to understand is the best form of learning but at instances where people read just for the good grades, is one not learning at such instances? There are students who read only when an examination is fast approaching and perform excellently in such examination but find it hard to answer the same questions perfectly after few months. Does that mean they crammed for such examinations or what? Some students even forget all they wrote down immediately after a paper, I know this is worse. There are times during lectures that some questions from previous sessions/semesters are asked and students seem to blank out even though they would have answered such questions correctly in those sessions/semesters they were taught. I know lot of students (myself included) are battling this menace and I hope we do overcome and learn even from comments we get here.
Now my question is; can this have an effect on one's performance when one starts working? For those who crammed while in school, how has it affected/is it affecting your performance at work?

depends on the course and person ,
Some subjects are irrelevant to your course of study.
Like in my first year we took IBO
And I'm studying EEE in FUTO, wetin join me and IBO I'm not even ibo , so Na cram and pour sure pass

When I do "la cram, la pour"... I forget almost immediately after the exam. Cramming is a no no, if it worked for some, it might not work for YOU. Sometimes everything just fizzles out when you see the examination paper(exam questions)

I used to be against the notion of cramming, but after trying to read(and understand) a voluminous textbook in preparation for my exams, and it didn't work out well(to be precise, my friend who is not as clever as I am, crammed the textbook, and did better than myself), I have been living in "CramLand"
Who nor like am, make e call police. Besides, whether you use tractor, or hoe take till soil, the plant go still grow.

one is bound to forget soon after the exam if he/she crammed(variably) , it's somewhat bound to affect future application of such crammed stuff..
You can't cram to pass some courses and thereafter leave them.they'll haunt you.

In some cases or rather courses,cramming is just the best option.

yea it does. There are instances where you could ask me a question in the exam hall and i'd give you a perfect answer, but fifteen minutes after the exam, i donnot seem to remember what i've written. Like one of our lecturers would say,"la cram la pour, la pass la forget". I pray am able to stop this habit pretty soon

It will affect u when u only cram to pass exams and never revisit such material. Imagine an engineer like myself cramming to pass n later find myself at site and not knowing wat to do, or more embarrassing not being able to even mention some of d terminlogies used at site. So wat i do is, i make sure i go back to get d understandin of any course i crammed to write it's exam, so as to reaquint myself wit it in order to avoid future embarrassment.

Yes it can affect your performance. It can affect it positively but it can also affect it negatively depending on other factors. It can affect it negatively if the student assumes life to be an academic exercise and is not street smart. But it can also affect it positively when you realize that cramming tasks the brain. It challenges the brain to work thereby expanding it's potential to deliver its potentials in real life The brain is like a rubber band and can never return to it's original "size" if stretched. Cramming stretches the brain by flexing one of the mental muscles. The brain has six mental muscles and memory is one of them.

Yes because you commit to short-term memory concepts that are meant for the long term and you learn just enough to be dangerous to yourself and others

Cramming makes u pass exams but its not beneficial for a professional cos practising is entirely different to what u got in a certificate.

we had a presentation in school for the course technical Art.
there is this village guy who always form smart for me and feels he can pull as much crowd as I do.
he sees himself as my rival while I just see him as a village boy.
we were to discuss Type of sceneries
the guy went to cram text books and online material .
on the day of presentation,the lecture asked the group leaders to question each others I asked him. "mr ogamu I heard you mention projected scenery please what is a projector he replied by saying my question is not related to the topic.he lost woefully because he was cramming instead of understanding.[/size]

its negative impact is very huge in the sense that, working is mostly applied. what do you have to offer when u crammed ur way throughout d institution. You become useless not only to ur company but also to urself. A friend of mine failed a course after cramming tediously and later failed the same examination. I was so puzzled, so I asked him what went wrong? and his response was; 'I had brain block few mins into d exam'.. everything he took time to cram suddenly disappeared into the thin air.

its very bad especially if you intend studying further. U find out u still resort to cramming because u failed to develop d ability to read and understand. It affects ur psyche as a scholar.

It equally leaves u vulnerable (so to speak) when u are asked to further explain d stuff u managed to cram while in school.

It has its uses sometimes bt it's a habit not worth inculcating by an ideal student.
