Should Nigeria Be Re-colonized? by zboyd: 9:23pm On Oct 21, 2014
In the article "Should Nigeria Be Re-Colonized?" by Jideofor Adibe, he asked the question:

"If there is a referendum for Nigeria to be re-colonized, how would you vote – YES or NO?"

Below are two responses to his question:

YES says nkateobiamaka.

"This question that you asked has been bothering me since I myself visited South Africa in 2008. I was indeed amazed at the level of development. Good roads, potable cold & water from the tap and the infrastructure are same with the developed world. I then regretted the hurried independence that has left us in the malaise and in this season of our anomie that we have found ourselves. I am a strong advocate of re-colonization. I am tired of living in the 18th century. I am not an illiterate. I possess a PhD, but life has not dealt us a fair deal in Nigeria. I was in Zimbabwe immediately they got their independence. They were well developed."

NO says C. Achodo.

"...rather than ask to re-colonise Nigeria, we should demand the outsourcing of governance of our public and social sector in Nigeria. We can leave the politics for Nigerian political elite but outsource the management of the economy to a group of international development institutions and agencies with clear terms of reference regarding what we want them to accomplish within a 10-15years period and with clear undertaking that the rights of Nigerian should be protected. Outsourcing Nigeria is the best solution if we are to catch up. UAE virtually works on this strategy so also other nations. They may not call it outsourcing but they have always sourced international companies to deliver on critical national infrastructure and services."

How would YOU vote?

Those that vote yes are weak black cowards. Yes lets surrender all our rights to whites just so we can have giant buildings whilst millions live without a home. Have more pride in yourself, STAND UP FOR YOURSELVES. You actually want to be recolonized? Please keep it outside of Yorubaland you black cowards (in the diaspora too)!

Yes Nigeria should be re-colonised with speed and let America or Britain whichever that's interested come bail us out from these corruption infected politicians like Jonathan and Co. Though the colonial masters will loot public treasury but they'll do more good to our society.

I can't stop cursing Nmadi Azikiwe and Awolowo as well as other greedy and self-seeking self-acclaimed politicians for seeking independence when in the real sense we aren't ripe enough.

Conclusively, Nigeria shouldn't be only re-colonised but all her present leaders today should be thrown in the high ocean like pack of cards.

The writer has a distorted PhD and he too like the rest of the distortedly educated Africans needs mental cleansing. Then they will be exposed to the world of possibilities. And he will never need to wish so horrendously.

The colonialists ruled you from 1897 to 1960, exporting your cocoa, rubber, tin, groundnuts, palm oil, iron ore, coal, for huge profits, and in that 63 year period they built not one university in the entire country. And not a single power plant. (The 270 mw total being generated at independence was derived from industrial generators imported to power a few elite (ie colonial) areas.)

Chew on that for a second.

See, the truth is corruption REDUCED DRASTICALLY when Nigerian leaders came to power at independence. From the looting of probably 95% of our annual earnings under the British, it came down to say 30% by our own politicians (if that). That was why as soon as the colonialists left, suddenly there was an explosion of new infrastructure, schools, universities, hospitals, roads, expressways, power plants etc etc. Cars no longer were for the super rich etc etc...People using South Africa as an example of what the whites can do should note that the apartheid govt re-invested the profits from the gold trade in SA, seeing it as 'their country', such that by around the 1940s SA was already developed, unlike the British govt in Nigeria, which simply siphoned earnings to Britain, leaving an underdeveloped territory to Nigerians at independence. So it's not as simple as saying ''SA is like that, Nigeria could also be like that if we had the whites in power''. Foreigners operate based on their interests not yours. wink

Why on earth would white people build a prosperous country for black people?

How could an African believe that white people would want to build a prosperous country for them?

Anyone that believes such a thing has to be supremely ignorant, I’m certain the people that believe that, do not live in the west and if they do, they haven’t lived here long enough to understand the people.

If you allowed the UK to re-colonise Nigeria, all the British Government would do is use the revenue from Nigeria to finance their debt problem, leaving the masses in Nigeria to suffer.

Lastly, why do African people have this myopic yet incredibly ignorant attitude to development? It took more than 200 years of consistent growth to get South Africa to where it is today? To develop a country, it requires years of sustained growth, it’s not something that can be done in 5 years, like so many ignorant Africans believe.

The Western World took centuries to get where it is today, Nigeria on the other hand, has only had sustained growth for 14 years, it’ll need at least another 30 years of consistent growth before it will be anywhere near the West. This is the reality, there’s no quick fix; developing a nation requires infrastructure development, implementation of policies, private sector investments, cultural enlightenment, and various other things.

You guys should be fixated on bettering your country instead of spending all your time criticizing it.

The weird thing is that most of these folks, their grandparents, who grew up under colonial rule, where for the most part, stark illiterate village peasants. The colonial govt failed to invest in the people. Malnutrition was rife, and the literacy rate was only around 8% at independence (that figure is up to 70% today due to massive investment in education by post-colonial black govts.). Yet the current generation, with their ipads, jeeps, fancy clothes and iphones think they have it bad, and romanticize the days of their grandparents. Someone should throw them back there if possible.

To answer yes to this question shows the person is an ignoramus. Answering yes shows that that person knows nothing about the past. Answering yes shows that that person is not moving with the tide. Who should colonise us? America? A place with over 1.5 million homeless people? A place where citizens pay tax through their nose to provide amenities they can't afford? A place where the people need food stamps to survive? We sometimes have to look beyond the skyscrapers, the affluence and the media hype. We are still reeling from the consequences yet some people actually voted Yes?? Some of our brothers are just brainwashed b*stards
Re: Should Nigeria Be Re-colonized? by markarov: 9:29am On Oct 22, 2014
How can any sane Nigerian demand for the return of the colonialists? It appears some people have forgotten how much sacrifice was made, especially by Nigeria, to deliver south Africa from the hands of the Boers apartheid regime. Yet, some folks deluded by the grandeur of economic prosperity in the West think that the only solution is to bring back the colonial masters. African countries left to themselves, can always find solutions to their problems, contrary to what the West wants us to believe. It is time to ask pertinent questions. What promises can colonialism hold for God's sake? What help do the colonialists want to render now that they couldn't do in the 20th century? How many universities did they establish?
It is time for Africans to shed off the toga of colonialism, and focus on the future. We must not be intimidated by the shadows of our colonial past but rather seek to harness our resources and potential to make Africa a 21st century wonder. We must secure intellectual freedom and mental emancipation to achieve this. We must not allow murderously self serving neo-colonialists to take advantage of our generation as they did our fore fathers.Colonialism is the ill wind that blows Africa no good

Out-sourcing seems a plausible solution.

I'm just as furious as you with what has gone on in this country since independence, and like you also believe the likes of Zik and Awo didn't really realize the enormity of the task before them.....a task not just of growing the new nations economy, but more importantly, one of managing the competing heterogeneous interests of the hundreds of ethnic groups and the two main religions in the country! They had a myopic view of what independence meant and felt our one and only problem was how to get rid of the British.....and that once we got rid of them it would be uhuru and celebratory drinks all round for everybody!

My answer to the question posed by the OP would be a mixture of what the two respondents said. Yes, we should have some form of quasi-recolonization; one in which Nigerians hold the national political positions (more of a ceremonial affair or else they would want to dabble into and influence the actual running things), while we outsource the management of critical sectors of the economy to reputable international consultants for a defined period of say 10 to 15 years! These consultants should be responsible for areas such as finance, works and housing, tourism, health, petroleum/solid minerals, education, justice, and -most important of all- RECRUITMENT OF NIGERIANS TO FILL SENSITIVE POSITIONS THAT IMPACT ON THE ECONOMY! The recruitment of Nigerians should be done strictly on merit, with quota-system and stupi/d federal character stopped within 5 years! If after 5 years the best can only be found in one region or ethnicity -say North West or Hausa/Fulani for instance- then so be it; it will now make others to sit up and put in their best or else they'll be left behind......no more free lunch and sitting on your arsse in the knowledge that whether you try or not, you'll still have the same chances as the other person that put in the effort and burned the midnight candle studying!

And when the consultants eventually leave, our polity would have been sufficiently sanitized and our national psyche changed from that of having a sense of entitlement, greed, tribalism and primitive accumulation of wealth; to that of hardwork, healthy competition and national pride! Also, the structure of the polity would have to change to that of a true federation or con-federation, either this happens or else i can guarantee you we'd be back to our old ways in no time!

How can you have a sense of national pride, after having someone else govern your country for you?

Why would foreign people govern your country with your interest at heart and not their own interest?

If you think Nigeria should out source its management, then you are essentially saying YOU are inferior.

Removing federal character would NEVER work, because Nigeria is a unification of several kingdoms, like the UK. So having one ethnic group dominate a specific sector or most of the nations sectors throughout the entire country would only lead to animosity.
