Grassroot must be allow to grow from the savagery hand of governors.i work at the grassroot and i knw hw local governments are being by the governors with nothing to show for lg allocations.for example the allocation of moro and share local govt is around 135 million and 127 millions respectively per month but the state govt only gve them access to 35 and 27 million making 100million fron each local govt per month to pay salaries alone. There was even a month the chairman of ifelodun slumped because he was being gvin access to less than the usual 27million. We must join hand to rescue local govt frm the whims of super corrupt governors

The LG positions will nw become a do-or-die affair since they can now do things on their own...

Why can't we just scrape it?

They shld strengthen the people's gain before they even give those thieves the mantle..

Like: every local govt shld be compelled b law to construct street roads or provide electricity and so on..anything otherwise will be another drain...

The Local government need 100% Autonomy and not tied to the string of Any Governor. It is a shame that governors now see LG as an appendice of their government. For God's sake LG officials are "supposed" to be elected, they shouldn't be at the mercies of the governors. They should stand on their own. LG's should be positioned to offer democratic dividends without recourse to the Governor. This act by the governors is absolutely unacceptable and shall be resisted.

right now LG dont have the power to anything except what the governors ask them to do...they are just there as figure to do the bidding of the state governors..
without lg autonomy nigeria democracy will have no meaning and development will continue to elude the grass root.

lg election right now is a selection process only by the governors, the people dont have a say at the grassroot, am very close to the grassroot and i see what this governors do on a daily basis to the lg

Seconded, but my problem is the involvement of the LG chairmen in this corrupt act. The local government chairmen actually gets their own share of this allocation thereby making the funds meant for the development of their area a story for the gods. But I believe thing will get better if these funds are given directly to the LGAs and the chairmen are transparent with how the funds are expended.

actually right now lg chairmen dont have direct access to lg fund except throught the state government and that is where the crumbs happen.

chairmen are close to the grassroot hence they wont have the luxury of corruption like governors, lg chairmen are people the masses know very well, they know their family, they are active member of the community, thus making it very hard for them to misbehave like the gorvernors.

I say YES! To local government autonomy! Let them be free to manage their own resources(but with supervision from regulatory bodies) atleast this will re-direct the complaints being channelled at the president even for matters that should be handled at the ward levels
Re: Lend Your Voice To Fight Gorvernors To Actualize Lg Autonomy by omenka(m): 11:48am On Oct 24, 2014
Their opposition to LG autonomy is the greatest hypocrisy yet from the governors. They lobby for complete autonomy of their respective states yet don't want the LGAs to be autonomous. Perhaps it would have made more sense if the bill had sought to eliminate the FG's financial obligations to the LGs altogether, that way, they would stop being the cash cows they've been for the state governors and the political parties.

The only purpose served by the LGs as they stand today is just to finance Parties'/ governors' social activities and a platform to reward party loyalists and friends of governors.

I am pro LG autonomy, pro state autonomy, pro INEC autonomy, pro resource control, pro federalism, pro Buhari and pro APC.

Was, am, and will be anti PDP (at least for the foreseeable future).

it is extremely easy to ensure transparency and accountability at the lg level because this is the only government close to the people. these are the people that are active member of the community, people know them, they eat together, they know there parent, their sons and daughters, their source of income before coming to government. it is extremely hard to lie to the people at this level of governance versus the gorvernors

I get your point but my argument is that "the LG chairmen also receives their own commission of these allocations, there's no way the governors will not be tipping them out of the money" and besides the LG level is also very corrupt.

yes they do because they are selected not elected, the state INEC is in the pocket of the governors, they do their biding and not the will of the people.

thanks to the senate and house of rep for cancelling state inec and giving autonomy to lg, with these to amendment development will reach the grassroot and the banner of performance will be raised as more credible people will vie for the office of chairman and Councillor

we have councillors that are supposed to watch over the Chairman and his/her executives. We have the people that are sooooo close to the councillors. We don't need any other regulatory body again for LG

Local government cannot be granted autonomy under federal system of government. They are suppose to be addendum of the state government administrative function.

can you please explain what you mean by addendum?? what is the job of Councillors if LGs are just addendum to the state government

who says is wrong to adjust our own federal system of government to suit our culture and values for the progress of our communities

Local Government autonomy is a must for me...Governors don't like it because they know how they use their own autonomy to bend the hands of the FG...
Re: Lend Your Voice To Fight Gorvernors To Actualize Lg Autonomy by seanet02: 12:51pm On Oct 24, 2014
The hypocrisy of the federal government is heartwrecking. If they actually want autonomy for the local government, they must be ready to implement true fiscal federalism where the states are the one that will be collecting the oil royalties, taxes and other revenues before paying a stipulated percentage to the federal government. Fiscal federalism is the way, this yamayama they are doing is dead on arrival.

it will be dead on arrival because people like you are supporting the gorvornors to be using LG funds to settle those that support them without recourse to the indiginious community

rome was not built in a day, we cant get all we want the same day and time, we have to start somewhere and this LG autonomy is a very brilliant way to start..

LG autonomy is not yamayama but what the local communities really deserve.

Am sure u are no where close to the grassroot if not you will be aware of the atrocities governors performs with lg funds
