I would choose an epidural in a heartbeat!!!...especially for someone like me who had back labour in both my deliveries.

Anyone that feels a woman needs to go through labour pains to prove her motherhood-bility, needs some serious examination of his/her mental status.

The more annoying set of people are those who believe woman who birth through CS are not real women...don't even get me started on those!

It may be a Nigerian thing.

Here in the US, my Ex (British/American) had all our kids with scheduled C section so I was kind of jaded when my current Wife (Ibadan proper) wasn't being receptive to C section as recommended by her PCP. I had to get my Mother in Law on the phone to talk to her. She was just going to sit in labor there with her bible in her hand doing the prayer thing sad

Moms to be, giving birth the old fashioned way doesn't make you a real mother, that's just backwards thinking. Good Motherhoodship is evidenced by a combination of things.

Is your child developing well, is your child being stimulated (not just plopped into a bassinet and retrieved to feed and diaper changed), is your child well mannered?

Trust me, when I sit in a fancy restaurant and have to listen to some brat yell continously at the top of his voice, at that moment I question your parent ability and not the method of delivery.

For those who have gone through this process here in Nigeria, how did it cost ?
Re: Mums: Would You Consider An Epidural? by Nobody: 4:29pm On Nov 02, 2014
Absolutely yes. Unfortunately a lot Nigerians seem to like suffering, it's like suffering is seen as a badge of honor lmao. So many of them won't take epidural and you see them even putting their lives at risk just to avoid CS so they can tell people how they pushed like a "real woman' undecided

Well,I don't really know much about these things but I heard some of the reasons why women have excrutiating pains while in labour, has to do with what and what they eat during pregnancy. I heard stuffs like ice-cream,chocolates and stuffs, makes the baby grow too big and also adds to delivery pains.

To be honest,I'm more of an old fashioned dude when it comes to issues like this. This is how I think of it: if my mother could deliver 4 kids normally without epidurals, and your mum(my partner) can deliver XYZ kids without epidurals;why should we(you and I) not do it this same way? I understand we're in a digital age where everyone wants everything done with just a click of a button but then, not everything should go that way. I like things being done naturally. One thing I know for sure is that, for every child my wife gives birth to,She'd definitely get a new top of the range luxury car as a gift for that. It's just going to be my own way of saying thank you for going through that pain to give me a child.

Well if your grandfather could walk 40 kilometers to the farm and do manual labour all day then walk 40kms back home, why cant you walk from VI to Sagamu? Why take a car? Things should be done "naturally" cars are not "natural " things trekking is more natural, good fresh air for the lungs and exercise for the heart

Why buy her a car? Is a range car "natural"? Buy her rubber slippers like our grandmoms had so she can trek some more and shed the post pregnancy weigh naturally

Easy tiger! I was just stating my own opinion and never criticised your write up for one second. Must we all have the same opinion about issues? The beauty of life is that we all can view issues from different angles and have divergent opions about them. You asked if ladies would use epidural and most said yes while a few said no. You didn't say "ladies, you must all use epidural". Get the drift? We all can't belong to APC or PDP;some would belong to APC while the others would join PDP.

Why don't you try passing a golf ball through your pe nis hole...let's see how natural you like things then.

For your info...a contraction in a woman carrying a 2kg baby, is just as painful as the contraction in a woman carrying a 4kg baby.

I just hate it when men try to compare their wives/women to their mothers....most of these men are not half the men their fathers are/were......mschewww!

No matter how much you try to sell this idea or make it look like I'm being difficult, truth is that, not everybody would still go for epidural. Why don't you try and respect other people's opinion;we all can't believe in the same thing. Muslims belive they are serving God,Christians believe they are serving God,all other religions believe they are serving God;but we all achieve that true different ways.

Here's a lady who said a qualified medical practictioner in Nigeria, asked her not to do it and gave her all the negatives about it and also told her it's an area that needs specialisation. Yet,some people on nairaland expect me to swallow the idea totally cos they believe in it. What works for A might definitely not work for B.
mmagdalene:
@topic

I wanted to opt for the epidural but my doctor advised against it. Scared me away with all the downsides. Also said it requires specialists who are very scarce in Nigeria. I asked for names of hospitals where it could be done in Nigeria and he said it's rarely done here and he doesn't even know any hospital where it's done. And I wonder, could this be true?

Anyway, I've had my baby and I thank God for safe delivery. Very painful, yes. Would have gone for the epidural if I found a hospital where it could be done.
Re: Mums: Would You Consider An Epidural? by chronique(m): 6:20pm On Nov 02, 2014
There is nothing like primitive reasoning here. If epidural wasn't invented;won't we have kids? Moreso,I find your arguement about men comparing their wives with their mothers, when they aren't half of what their fathers are/were,kinda amusing. I don't know about the men you've spoken to or been with but I'm sure if you ask my father today,He would definitely tell you He's sure I'd be greater than Him. Kicking against epidural has nothing to do with me comparing wifey with my mum. If you read my first submission carefully, you'd notice ia talked about our mothers(I and potential wifey's mum);not just mine.

It was until you said how long the pain lasts.

I am a woman, I have not had a baby before so I keep quiet when mums tell me about their experiences.

You a man is telling us how long birth pain lasts despite the fact that you have not even asked your wife; you are saying what you believe she would say.
