Fasting On The Day Of 'ashura (10th Muharram) by Ahmed4002(m): 9:34am On Nov 02, 2014
Today 10th of Muharram which is equivalent to 2/11 / 2014 it's expected every Muslim to fast on this day and the following day.

It was narrated from Ibn "Abbas ( may Allah be pleased with them ) that the messenger of Allah ( peace be upon him) came to Al - madinah and found the Jews fasting on the day of ' Ashura. The messenger of Allah ( P.B.U.H ) said to them:

"what is this day that you are fasting? " they said: "this is a great day, on which Allah saved Moses (P.B.U.H ) and his people.
moses (P.B.U.H ) fasted on this day out of gratitude and we fast it too".
The messenger of Allah ( P.B.U.H ) said:
"we are more entitled to be closer to moses (P.B.U.H ) than you", and the messenger of Allah ( P.B.U.H ) fasted (on this day) AND Enjoined FASTING ON IT.

source: Sahih Muslim, Vol no. 3, the book of fasting. Hadith 2658.

Abu Qatada (radi Allahu anhu) relates that the
Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said that
the fast on the 10th of Muharram atones for
the sins of the preceding year. [Sahih Muslim]
It is reported from Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu
anhu) that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa
sallam) said that after Ramadan, the fasts of
Muharram have the greatest excellence. [Sahih
Muslim]
The 10th of Muharram was the day that Allah
(subhana wa ta’ala) delivered Musa (alaihis
salam) and the Bani Israil from Egypt and
drowned Firaun and his people. Musa (alaihis
salam) thus observed fast on this day out of
gratitude to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).
When the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam)
came to Madina he found the Jews fasting on
this day for this reason. Because Muslims follow
unaltered revelation, they are closer to Musa
(alaihis salam) than the Jews are. Thus, Allah
(subhana wa ta’ala) inspired Rasul Allah (sal
Allahu alaihi wa sallam) to fast on the tenth of
Muharram too and tell the Muslims to fast on
that day as well. But to distinguish ourselves
from the Jews, Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa
sallam) told us to fast on either the 9th or the
11th along with the 10th. [Sahih Bukhari]

The month of Muharram is the first
month of the Arabic year, and it is one of
the four sacred months of Allaah. Allaah
says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, the number of months with
Allaah is twelve months (in a year), so
was it ordained by Allaah on the Day
when He created the heavens and the
earth; of them four are Sacred (i.e. the
1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th
months of the Islamic calendar). That is
the right religion, so wrong not
yourselves therein”
[al-Tawbah 9:36]
al-Bukhaari (3167) and Muslim (1679)
narrated from Abu Bakrah (may Allaah
be pleased with him) that the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said: “The division of time has
turned to its original form which was
current the day Allaah created the
heavens and earth. The year consists of
twelve months of which four are sacred:
three consecutive months, Dhu’l-Qa’dah,
Dhu’l-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab
of Mudar which comes between Jumada
and Sha’baan.”
It was proven from the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that
the best fasting after Ramadaan is fasting
in the month of Muharram. It was
narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah
be pleased with him) said: The Messenger
of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah
be upon him) said: “The best fasting after
Ramadaan is the month of Allaah
Muharram, and the best prayer after the
obligatory prayer is prayer at night.”
Narrated by Muslim, 1163.

So he (the Prophet Muhammad) fasted on this
day and told the people to fast.
Al-Shaafa’i and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaaq
and others said: It is mustahabb [recommended]
to fast both the ninth and the tenth, because
the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him) fasted the tenth and intended to
fast the ninth. Based on this, there are
different ways of fasting ‘Ashoora’, the least
of which is to fast the tenth only, but it is
better to fast the ninth as well. The more one
fasts in Muharram, the better. (islamqa.info)
The prophet observed the fast on Ashuraa (the
10th of Muharram), and ordered (Muslims) to
fast on that day. (Agreed upon Hadith i.e.
Bukhari & Muslim).
Narrated by Abi Katada: The prophet was asked
about fasting on ‘Ashuraa’ (the 10th of
Muharram), he said: “it expiates the previous
year (for sins).” (Sahih Muslim)
It was proven from the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) that the best
fasting after Ramadaan is fasting in the month
of Muharram. It was narrated that Abu
Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of
Allah be upon him) said: “The best fasting after
Ramadan is the month of Allah Muharram, and
the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is
prayer at night.” Narrated by Muslim, 1163.

Allahu akbar just lots of morals in this story let me see the ones i can remember
1) you can't change Allah's will....when firaun heard about the unborn child, he ordered the killing of all male children born at that time but when Allah wills nabi musa was brought up in his palace
2) no matter the number of opposition if Allah is by your side you'll be victorious........1.6 million soldiers against six hundred people says it all
3)when all hope is lost trust Allah.the followers of nabi musa thought it was over at the sight of firaun near the sea
4)it proves the authenticity of Al quran as word of God and not fabrication from muhammad......
No other scripture talks about the preservation of firauns body

ISIS is not doing us any good
It is wrong to forcibly restrain Shias from doing that haram stuff
Better to educate people - engage them in debate, prove that they are wrong and they are!
The use of force on religious matters breeds unintended consequences and it is even counter productive

Popular but Unreliable V

Undoubtedly, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) fasted on the 10th day of Muharram, ‘Aashooraa, in the early days of his call in Makkah. Likewise after the Hijrah to Madeenah, he verified that ‘Aashooraa was the day Allah destroyed Fir’awn and his hosts and saved Nabiyy Moosa – alayhis-salam – and his people; and he – sallallahu alayhi wasallam – fasted on that day and obligated the Muslims to do same. He – sallallahu alayhi wasallam – averred that the reward for the ‘Aashooraa fast is expiation of the sins of the past year. Later on when fasting the month of Ramadan became obligatory, the ‘Aashooraa fast dropped to a recommended act, and in order to further differ from the Jews and Christians who would fast on the 10th day alone, Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) approved fasting the 9th day, Taasoo’aa, together with ‘Aashooraa. However, it is common to find people specially spending lavishly on their families on these days, thinking that it is from the Sunnahs of ‘Aashooraa to do so. Generally referred to as kayo-kayo in Yoruba and chika-chiki in Hausa - both meaning “eating to full” -, this practice is encouraged by some of the people from the hadeeth ascribed to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that he said, “Whoever lavishes upon his family on the day of ‘Aashooraa, Allah will bestow favors on him throughout the year.” Collected by al-Bayhaqee and others, and is said to be reported from the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) by Abu Hurayrah, Abu Sa’eed al-Khudree, Abdullah bin Mas’ood and Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansaaree – radiya Allahu anhum.
After a detailed analysis of the chains of the reports attributed to each companion which shows that these reports have been transmitted generation after generation by Fabricators, Liars and Weak reporters, Imam Muhammad Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee – rahimahullah – said, “Despite the utter weakness of its chains, acting upon such (narration) was not known among the pious predecessors. No one among the leading scholars of jurisprudence ever mentioned it or encouraged such lavish mentioned in the hadeeth.” Silsilat ad-Da’eefah no. 6824. In his checking and editing of the book, al-I’tisaam by Imam ash-Shaatibee (rahimahullah), al-‘Allaamah Mashhoor Hasan Aal-Salmaan (hafidhahullah) said, “It has many chains which are not safe from serious weakness or discontinuity.” He continued, “The truth is that the weakness in the hadeeth is severe; it should not be relied on as evidence and the various chains cannot gain strength in order to be graded Sound.” Al-I’tisaam 2/238. Before them both, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taimiyyah (rahimahullah) gave an extensive discussion on the issue which includes, “And it is reported in a Fabricated hadeeth and lie ascribed to the Prophet – sallallahu alayhi wasallam – that ‘Whoever lavishes upon his family on the day of ‘Aashooraa, Allah will shower favors on him throughout the year’. Ascribing all these to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) is false…” Majmoo’ al-Fataawa (25/300).
In addition, ostentatious spending on the family specially on ‘Aashooraa would resemble what the Jews used to do on that day which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) asked us to contradict. In the report of Abu Moosa al-Ash’aree it says that the people said to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam): “The people of Khaybar (i.e., the Jews) would fast on ‘Aashooraa and celebrate on it; they would make their women wear ornaments and their beautiful clothes.” Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) then said, “You should rather fast on it.” Saheeh Muslim no. 2661. Therefore, spending lavishly on food, dress etc. on the day of ‘Aashooraa is wrong. Despite the fact that the reports conveying such lavish are weak, such practices are from the ways of the Jews and we have been ordered to act differently. And as Shaykh al-Islam ath-Thaanee, Ibn Qayyim al- Jawziyyah – rahimahullah - affirmed, “The people of Sunnah will follow what the Prophet – sallallahu alayhi wasallam – ordered and avoid the Innovation the Shaytaan has ordered.” Barakallahu feekum!
