Busybody, I take very strong exception to your comments, which are at best uncharitable, if not mischievous.

From erroneously, or perhaps deliberately, miscalculating monies, to calling TEHN jazzed.

Apart from the voluntary efforts, TEHN also have a stake in this, after all, some of our members also donated anonymously, in addition to the efforts.

We are open to corrections and suggestions for improvements, but it doesn't speak well of anyone to dismiss one's efforts as you have been doing here. You only fell short of accusing TEHN of stealing your money.

Approach matters. Babyosisi and one other medical person from NL here have been working with us at the background, comparing notes with the hospital, and giving us advice, that is the way it should. Not coming here to rubbish one's efforts.

When a hospital calls for test that has not been done before, what do you expect us to do? Reject it? Yes, we have expressed our displeasure that we are unhappy the diagnosis is taking too long. But there is little we can do; if our goal is to see DJ well, then we cannot afford to be given any excuse that's it's because you didn't pay for X test, for Y scan.

We are open to working with you if you think you know better.

Yes, it is about DJ and you cannot be more concerned about him than me. I have been with him, at the hospital bed. I was so emotional that I shed tears. Yes, that does not matter, and is even trivial. But you need to know that you're not more concerned about him than anyone else.

Be specific about your request and advice. I cannot take being called name in the name of doing volunteer work.

1) Get over yourself, this is not about you. Tehn presented a bill showing an amount was charged for liver biopsy when the same TEHN provided 2 updates earlier stating a biopsy was not required. All this genuine query needs "professionally" is a simple clarification from Tehn's Accountant stating the true state of things not this back and forth parambulating from you, so carry your self-aggrandisement outta my face.

2) Again 3 out of the 4 underlying aetiology of the malignant ascites has been tested for and eliminated as far back as 3 weeks ago by this same hospital...four minus three =?? Is it benign?? What grade/stage is it??...So my input here about the mounting escalating cost, without a diagnosis that is as plain as the nose on your face, is justified...So Mr Jarus, is it a crime for me to ask, since the Hospital "knowingly" refuses to talk about this that they have known all these weeks

I seriously take exception to comment like this. It is very easy for you to sit out and roll out criticism. From experience, being on the field is a lot different from you just sitting at a corner to analyse situations. In my own opinion, you can only make an accurate judgement when you are part of the field team. trust me!

So according to you, it is a crime to criticise a thieving hospital and everyone should wait an extra 8 weeks for the diagnosis they have been aware of since 19gbogboro abi. Ok noted.

I asked my "original" question in a professional capacity, Jaybee responded to something else. You yourself responded totally off-tangent. So what option did y'all leave me with? And mind you I wasn't the first to ask this. Anyway, now with your personal sly digs at me in your previous posts, I can now clearly see that your own response was deliberate and premeditated...so keep going personal, keep it up since this is polite in your own book.

Liver disease and retroviral disease ruled out, YET hospital's next call is referral to Gastroenterologist for Liver Biopsy...Cytology test, CT SCAN, Colonoscopy was indicative of a mass on the colon, YET again hospital's next call is treating for TB, wow...

And they are criticising me for criticising the hospital, Egbani elaja??

No one is against you being critical of the hospital(infact members of TEHN were not to comfortable with the number of tests he was initially asked to take). The issue is your manner of approach....soo unprofessional!

So again asking the Accountant of a professional organisation to liaise with the Hospital's finance department to fine-tune the bills they are issuing is unprofessional, wow!

Excuse me pass...its a free world, so it's Tehn's prerogative to take umbrage and choose to act butthurt instead of doing the needful...all join...its indeed a free world.

Can we please bring the focus back to this guys as this back and forth jibe aint productive in any way shape or form. We all want DJ to get well and we shall continue to do everything within our capacity to ensure that's the eventual outcome.

"Immediate Challenges:
Hammed is now feeling stronger than ever and in turn wants to return home as he is growing bored of sitting about the hospital doing nothing. We do sympathise with him as well as happy that his condition has at least gotten better if compared to the way it was weeks back.

As much as we feel the best way to approach this is by him getting a definitive diagnosis and in turn proceed on an agreed treatment plan, we understand his growing frustrations and thus might have to reluctantly allow him to turn into a day patient. He has assured us that he will present himself as of when needed and we will continue to work with him to provide a lasting solution.

There is no need for all these Iyalode.

1. We report events as they are being carried out and we are mindful of every penny spent. The N120K deposited for biopsy is still with the hospital and we have not reached the stage of asking for refund since we are yet to reach a logical conclusion.

2. We are not aware of the tests carried out at Eruwon and how the doctor there reached his conclusions, as the attached is the only document that followed Ahmed out of Eruwon and you will agree with us no specialist can work with that.

3. We are concerned with the time taken to reach a definite diagnosis including the amount spent, and we did inform the hospital of our concerns but we were told Ahmed has to be systematical and thoroughly examined so they don't get it wrong. We guess this is their style.

4. We also contemplated taking him somewhere else, but the teaching hospitals' doctors are still on strike and taking him to another private hospital might mean starting all over again.

5. But we did inform the hospital we wish to get a definite result soon else we might have to consider alternatives.

6. Fortunately Ahmed is looking and getting better and now wish to be be an out patient.

7. What is paramount to us is getting the diagnosis right on point and Ahmed getting the right treatment, we wish it could have been faster and less costly but unfortunately it is not. This is one of the realities of healthcare challenges of this country.

Thank you.

Hammed feels he is well enough and pretty adamant about being an outpatient. What are the obvious things we ought to worry about so it doesn't get missed?

Your concern is noted, we thought of the possibility too, but we are unable to reach the conclusion that it is a rip off. We also have no guarantee that taking him to another hospital apart from teaching hospitals will be less expensive. Private Specialists Hospitals in Nigeria are very expensive from our findings.

However, the way forward is to suggest alternatives. What are your suggestions?

We've done so. Another member of TeHN in addition to the one that has been by hammed's side from day one visited them on Monday and reiterated our concerns to them hence the thorough explanation of why their process seems to be on the slow side.

I won't blame the hospital. There is need to do every test possible .

I had an uncle that had similar issue, it took yrs of diagnosis, back and front, before TB was discovered in his Spinal cord.

Life is more important here. The hospital is doing what they are supposed to do.

I responded to Jarus earlier somewhere. There is 4 possible causes a b,c,d.

Tests were carried out,b and c were ruled out, meaning he is healthy in this department, YET hospital sends patient to do further tests for b again. Why

These further tests tended to a, YET hospital starts treating for e which was never in the equation before. Why

Now further subsequent tests tends again to a, YET hospital starts treatment for d. Again why

Why is the hospital playing people round? Don't they have a conscience?

what are your a b c d ?

Nothing definite or conclusive was reach at the early weeks, may be our layman reporting got you confused.

BTW, Ahmed has been with the hospital for about 5 weeks not months.

Look through the report below again and tell us in specific terms where their procedure became questionable and we might take it up with them.

r231:
UPDATE!!!
As promised, we visited the hospital on Monday (15/12/2014) to express our growing concerns with respect to the perceived slow pace as far as getting a definitive diagnosis is concerned.
We were able to extract the following Information (Please see summary below) from his doctors:
‎Hammed was first brought in from Eruwa about a month ago, he presented with progressive weight loss, abdominal swelling and lower back pain.
Based on the combination of the swelling and lower back pain, there were four options which were considered
1. malignancy
2. Advanced retroviral disease
3. Liver Disease
4. Abdominal Tuberculosis
The first thing was to do a retroviral test which showed no viral disease.
The next step was a test of kidney and liver functions respectively which showed they were about average more or less and thus that was eliminated
In addition, other tests (both routine and sophisticated) have been held and so far were only indicative.
The next step was to refer Hamed to a gastroenterologist for the liver biopsy where it was decided he be drained first.
After draining and before the biopsy (which was not held), a surface lump was sighted via physical examination and scans.
The thought of the specialist was then to do a laparoscopy (a minimally invasive procedure) to remove the superficial lump.
However he was brought back to Life Specialist.
Based on the drained fluid, a cytology of the fluid was held.
In the meantime, a regimen to embattle abdominal tuberculosis was embarked upon Tuesday which has accounted for the improvement in his physical condition
The thinking here is that while the results of tests are awaited, this is a no risk step which will pay dividends if the diagnosis is abdominal TB and at least provide some healing if not.
The result of the cytology  showed a presence of cancerous cells but no idea of the primary source just yet
NEXT STEPS
A. the results of the CT scan on the abdominal area is awaited. he hopes to follow up with the lab and get this tomorrow
If this does not provide the primary source, there is need for additional scans so as to identify the source and then the stage
B. Once the primary source, the relevant course of treatment can be embarked upon

Immediate Challenges:
Hammed is now feeling stronger than ever and in turn wants to return home as he is growing bored of sitting about the hospital doing nothing. We do sympathise with him as well as happy that his condition has at least gotten better if compared to the way it was weeks back.

As much as we feel the best way to approach this is by him getting a definitive diagnosis and in turn proceed on an agreed treatment plan, we understand his growing frustrations and thus might have to reluctantly allow him to turn into a day patient. He has assured us that he will present himself as of when needed and we will continue to work with him to provide a lasting solution.

PS: We are impressed with the visual state of Hammed as he now looks much better. His face looks fresher and he is generally more optimistic for the future

We are all Yoruba and know "oro" even if couched.

Yes, I'm the TEHN accountant, but the right persons (coordinator - r231; spokespersons - oam4j and jaybee) have been replying you, but you didn't want to listen to explanation. That is where the issue.

Only wish we can publish the emails we exchanged in TEHN for you know how concerned we all are about the hospital's serial tests. At a point, Chaircover and OAM4J almost lost their patience with the hospital. These are things going on underground.

We're all concerned about the back and forth, but when a hospital ask us to conduct a test, yes, we can question them, but do you expect us to turn it down and refuse to do, when life is involved?

These are issues you're ignoring and making it look like we're just lying down dishing out money to the hospital like fools.

Point of correction - I don't sugarcoat words, I directed that at Nairaland/Tehn MEANING everyone involved in this case including myself (I stated Nairaland/Tehn many times, my posts are still there)...Nigerian hospitals are known for fleecing people so keep acting butthurt that I asked A'boki to travel to the north to get antidote to release us... And as you have insulted me back severally, equation has balanced, so go and sit down with your theatrics and drama and quit the victim "me, me, me" mentality. a,b,c,d refers to the 4 options/differential diagnosis indicated by the hospital in that update...Ultrasound scan done 16th/17th of November threw up a mass...Cytology test done Nov 24th or was it Nov 29th revealed cells...Colonoscopy done around same time revealed mass on Colon...Laparoscopy ordered but it result wasn't published meaning it was called off...why was this called off? Why was liver biopsy requested for and not Colon biopsy which could have been done same time as Colonoscopy? Why treatment for Tuberculosis this week? Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera...Why are they dodging option a since 3 weeks ago

We are all aware DJ got admitted Nov 15th, so this Friday would make it week 5.
