Goodluck Jonathan has asked politicians to desist from hiding under immunity to make utterances that tend towards tearing the country apart, saying that Nigeria would continue to exist as a nation despite blackmail by the opposition.
The President was speaking in his residence when the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, led traditional rulers from Bayelsa State to pay homage to the President on his 57th birthday.
He decried what he called abuse of privileges which has led to the call in some quarters that the immunity clause should be removed.
He described those who make statements that threaten the peace of the country as risking treasonable felony.
The Bayelsa State Governor did not just lead his countrymen to the villa for the sake of it, he also brought the President situation report back home.
According to him, contrary to the impression in some quarters, Bayelsa State remained at peace with themselves and other parts of the country.
The President then thanked the delegation. He said that the visit by his people had boosted his confidence that his immediate constituency was behind him and that he would not disappoint them.
Bayelsa is the home state of President Goodluck Jonathan, he hails from Otuoke

Regardless, the countries we follow restrict only a tenth of treasonable speech to give an illusion of expressional freedom. Political correctness states that everyone has an opinion and is free to voice it; no matter how weird or hateful.

In section 39(1): Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference.
(2) Without prejudice to the generality of subsection(1) of this section, every person shall be entitled to own, establish and operate any medium for the dissemination of information, ideas and opinion.
The freedom of expression, including holding opinions, to receive and impart ideas or information is very fundamental to the development of any society because information is power and when the power is gotten, transformation changes can be achieved by the people. Consequently, the constitution says without prejudice i.e. without discrimination or favouritism every person shall be allowed to own a means of mass communication or information dissemination in the country.
It’s also important to say that the United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights Law (1948) in article 19 of the document provides for the fundamental right of expression, holding of opinion and disseminating such opinion; receiving information from others as well as imparting through various ways of communication without interference or restriction.

In the light of the above, Nigeria is a signatory to this declaration because of her formal membership of UN.
