Aba Sports Club commissions multi-million naira green golf course

A multi million naira Green Golf Course built inside the Aba Sports Club 1926 complex by members of the Golf section of the club has been commissioned with funfair amidst competitions.

Speaking while performing the commissioning ceremony, the President of Aba Sports Club, Dr. Uche Uwa Onwuchekwa said he was happy that the Green Golf project was completed during his tenure.

Onwuchekwa said with the commissioning of the project, the golf section would start playing host to golfers around the world due to its high standard.

He enumerated the economic benefits of the golf course to Aba and Abia state as a whole, stating, “With the golf course in place, Aba will surely bounce back and the best hands that left the city will soon return”.

While commending Chief Mike Nkwoji and other ‘hole owners’ for their contributions towards the timely completion of the project, he proposed what he called a ‘green fee’ which would be used to maintain the golf course. “To build a green course is one thing, it’s another to maintain it and that’s why I’m proposing a ‘green fee’ that will be used to maintain the golf course”, he stated.

Earlier, the Golf Section Captain, Hanson Igwe said the green golf project included the building of 18 green holes and the recovering of the course back 9 and the provision of water for all year maintenance of the golf course.

“I’m glad that we’ve really worked hard and today we have all the Brown converted to Green and you can see the beauty of this golf course which is known in golfing circles as the ‘Pride of the East’.”

Igwe who is also the security consultant to the Sun said the motorized tractor for the mowing of the lawns import- ed by the Section had arrived at the Ports awaiting clearance and urged members to pay their compulsory levy for the course maintenance.

A member of the Aba veterans of the golf section, Chief Mike Okpala a.k.a Tiger Wood of Aba thanked the leader- ship of the club for their efforts in the development of the golf course. According to him since golf does not have age barrier, Okpala urged both the young and elderly in Aba to patronize the golf course which he said was built to international standard.
