7 Political Shortcomings Of General Buhari by emmalezy(m): 3:58pm On Dec 10, 2014 |
The 2015 presidential election in Nigeria is coming very soon. The polls are almost here. Today, December 10, 2015, is the final battle for the presidential candidates of the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC).The former Head of the State General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) is among them. Last week RN wrote about good sides of the retired General, now we offer you to have a look at his shortcomings. 1. Coup-plotter General Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria After Coup, January 1, 1984. General Buhari is a coup plotter. He planned the coup that exiled a democratically-elected president. Major-General Buhari was nominated to lead Nigeria by middle and high-ranking military officers after the successful military coup d’etat that overthrew civilian President Shehu Shagari on December 31, 1983. Buhari was chosen as the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and Tunde Idiagbon was appointed the Chief of General Staff (the de facto No. 2 in the administration). Buhari justified the military’s capture of power by criticizing the civilian government as hopelessly corrupt, and his administration subsequently initiated a public campaign against indiscipline known as “War Against Indiscipline” (WAI). 2. Abuse of human rights Guardian journalists Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor Human rights must be protected and must not be abused. Immediately General Buhari seized power, he proclaimed that he would “tamper with” the press. Soon, the infamous Decree Number 4 was broadcasted, which made even the publication of the truth a punishable offence. Under this cover, Buhari jailed innocent journalists, including Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor. He abolished civil liberties, promulgated retroactive decrees enabling him to kill Nigerians through jungle justice, proscribed civil society organizations and professional groups and exercised “absolute” power. 3. Buhari jailed Fela Anikulapo-Kuti A decree was passed that nobody take out or bring in foreign currency into the country. He imprisoned a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick Fela Anikulapo-Kuti on trumped up charges under emergency law, which prompted the sentencing judge to confess that he was ordered to do so and to apologize to Fela. It was Buhari’s administration that said it has “decided to deal with this Fela problem once and for all.” Buhari locked up politicians without trial. 4. The leader of the North Without any doubt, Buhari has massive support in the North. Indeed, he is the most popular Northern politician in the Nigeria today. But that precisely remains his undoing at the centre. Even in the North, his support base is limited to the Muslim population. He does not appeal to Northern Christians. Then there is the added factor of the opposition of his implacable opponents among the Northern elite. 5. Age Buhari is no Nigerian Mandela and never laid claim to that. Last December 17, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) turned 71. A lot of his competitors says that he is not able to rule Nigeria because he is not young enough. He will be 73 in 2015 and he should reveal to us his health status. At 72, most people actually live on drugs and food supplements. May be his time has passed and he is of more use to Nigeria and Nigerians out of the presidency? 6. Islam Fundamentalist The excerpt from newspaper, where Buhari calls for Sharia Many times Buhari repeated that he is not a religious fanatic. But let’s recall just his desire of Sharia implementation in some northern states and concluded that the Islamic legal system has restored sanity in the affectedstates. Recently the APC presidential aspirant, says that he can pick a Muslim running mate for the 2015 election if he emerges victorious at the party’s primary election. 7. He is not loyal The presidential campaign of General Buhari in 2011 Buhari has been a candidate in every election since 2003. Twice as the candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP) and once as the candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). Both parties are now defunct having merged with a third-party, the Action Congress of Nigeria. The ACN was the main base to form the APC. If he succeeds in becoming the APC candidate later this year, it will make it his fourth attempt in a row. He dumped from party to party chased the lucky for being president. Just before the 2011 elections, Buhari addressed a campaign rally in Lagos where he made it known that it would be his last shot at the office. But he didn’t keep his promise and try again. 12 Reasons why APC should pick Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as its PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: PICK BUHARI, THE FACE OF CHANGE By Balogun Akeem. 1. AN INCORRUPTIBLE ENIGMA One converging point at which friends, admirers, foes and detractors agree upon the person of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) is the issue of his transparent, honest and incorruptible nature. Such a man can tame the behemoth of corruption and liberate Nigerians from that scourge's destructive impacts. If corruption in Nigeria is reduced by 50% over 70% of our problems will be solved. It takes an incorruptible person to sincerely fight corruption. 2. THE FACE OF CHANGE To most Nigerians that are not politicians but critical and wise voters who are yearning for change, the nomenclature of the Party and slogan are not the attraction or issue, but the person who is trusted enough to facilitate and bring about desired change; it must be that person who can make the difference. It is Gen. Muhammadu Buhari who is one undeniable Face of Change illuminating the APC. He is one very solid character upon which APC's reputation is founded and constructed. 3. THE VOTES MATTER Among Nigerian contemporary politicians and leaders, Gen Muhammadu Buhari is undisputedly a political leader with the largest of ardent followers actoss the country, a following that is not induced, purchased, coerced, brainwashed, but based on the admiration of his trustworthiness and honesty of purpose; his courage, patriotism and love; his truthfulness and disciplined nature. Above all, he is God-fearing and free of that ugly tag in Nigeria where official corruption has degenerated to a level of being official. 4. DISCIPLINE General Mohammadu Buhari has been able to successfully grow himself in selflessness, unconditional love, self control, dutifulness and sacrifice which are the characteristics and hallmark of a great disciplined leader and sage. This is why Gen Buhari is always distinctively glorious among equals. A man that is selfish and lacks self control can only be an agent of national destruction. So let's go the Buhari Way. 5. CAPACITY TO TAKE DIFFICULT AND HARD DECISION There are fundamental and difficult decisions that must be taken for Nigeria's ship of state to navigate aright, particularly regarding corruption and restructuring, among several others. Such decisions need a courageous, selfless, disciplined, incorruptible personality with a sound sense of judgment to be able to act appropriately and accordingly. Gen Muhammadu Buhari is that man for now in Nigeria. 6. PERFORMANCES Gen Muhammadu Buhari has undying penchant for performance at every point of duty he finds himself. Gen Olusegun Obasanjo said in one of his books, "Give any duty or assignment to General Muhammadu Buhari and he will perform it beyond your expectation; if by any chance he did not meet your expectation, it will not be because he did not put in his best." Gen Buhari has outstanding capacity to inspire loyalty, commitment to duty and cause, control and patriotism. He is tested and trusted and trusted. 7. A GREAT LIGHT AND INSPIRATION In the web of gross darkness imposed on Nigeria by the cankerworms of corruption, Gen Muhammadu Buhari acts a beam of light, a ray of hope and necessity an instrument of change. He is never swallowed in the crowd, and is not one to be intoxicated nor overwhelmed by power and position or their excitement. He is ever outstanding due largely to his sterling leadership qualities. 8. THIS IS NO TIME FOR A STOOGE IN POWER OR A PRESIDENT BY ERROR In this critical and challenging moment of the life of our dear country Nigeria, there is a clarion call for a purposeful, dynamic, charismatic, courageous, capable and experienced leadership. There is a crying demand for a leader that can effectively and appropriately champion a national rebirth to father a new Nigeria of our collective aspiration; a national cry for a corruption-free, progressive, united and secure nation. Gen Buhari is undoubtedly such a leader, our own Nelson Mandela. 9. ON ACCUSATION OF BEING A RELIGIOUS BIGOT. That only exists in the imagination of detractors, those who fear and dread Gen Muhammadu Buhari's incorruptible status in an environment that celebrates corruption. They know it will take an incorruptible person to faithfully fight corruption; they will rather twist facts and crooked-up sentiments in order to keep in power an empire of the corrupt. What was intentionally manipulated to mean that Gen Buhari said Muslims should vote for Muslims was his wise counsel spoken in Hausa language that Nigerians should only vote for God-fearing men and women, Gen Buhari himself being a God- fearing man, the reason for his nationally acclaimed incorruptible and disciplined nature. 10. STILL ON RELIGION Gen Muhammadu Buhari was once quoted as saying that 'the Muslim God is not in Mecca neither is the Christian God in Jerusalem. If anyone must go on pilgrimage, it should be done on personal sacrifice and not at huge national cost. He frowned at the corrupt practices involved in yearly pilgrimages. These are no words from a Religious bigot but words on marble from a true nationalist. He is only faithful to his faith without depriving others to do same. 11. PATRIOTISM General Muhammadu Buhari is a great patriot, who will sacrifice personal comfort as he has always done in order to attain national and collective goals and objectives. He possesses a strong character needed to resolve our multifaceted national problems and challenges. 12. A GREAT TEAM BUILDER Gen Muhammadu Buhari believes in team work, particularly with people who can be trusted and faithful to set goals and national objectives. d people's general is winning d war already. 1 Like |
