To be candid, I really thank God for the school I
passed through (FUTA). When I was an undergraduate, I thought my lecturers to be wicked and callous. I never knew they were actually grooming me for the future.... They have made me a better person.

I did not experience any of the items the op stated. I think we should mention the names of such lecturers and the university. Other ppl can then confirm or debunk the claims. If the lecturer knows that ppl are complaining about his/her methods, it is another way of bringing change to the sector.
Such things may happen in village schools though.

YOU ARE NOT A NIGERIAN.....we don't talk trash like this.
If I may ask my humble Nigerian, since I'm now a foreigner
Where did you school at? I'm thinking France undecided
Because you obviously aren't in touch with the Nigerian system of education..
But then again, that's ur opinion and this is mine wink

NO. It's a clear difference between African culture and "western culture". The power distance is just much greater in a typical African society. And I wonder why your lecturer has to comment on your social media posts? Would you expect him to do that for ~200 students...is he jobless?

I object to your use of the word "most".

I object strongly to the word "most".

It would help if you gave some examples of the former. Still no reason why the latter should be tolerated.

They grade you to a marking scheme, not their own level of control of the Queen's language.

You can tell I'm unhappy about your post. You make it seem like "really good" lecturers are the exception, rather than the rule. I can't say I agree with you, but perhaps I'm looking at the issue through glasses rose-tinted to the shades of my university?

My dear it seems you've misconstrued the idea I'm trying to project.. embarassed I'm in no way saying d average Nigerian Lecturer is bad or sub standard, I'm just saying they can do better smiley
And if I may ask, how does a lecturer who specialises in technical blasting grade you with excellence and proficiency?!
U aren't a lecturer are you? grin don't worry! You're probably one of d good guys cool

Most students are worse than their lecturers by all standards.

Lecturers that taught me have high proficiency in English, they publish articles ocassionaly in International journals. 6 of my Lecturers are professors and 5 are Associate profs, i have 3 of them on my facebook and 2 on LinkedIn. If i may ask my brother, how did u get your statistics? Which uni did u attend?

Well, then again,my foreign lecturers did not comment on my posts.....

Some do....but then most don't. Then factor in the poor labs, poor libraries, poor lecture theaters, poor hostel facilities, and you would get why it is difficult to pass in a Nigerian university.Then...the poor primary and secondary schools.

That is why either funding goes up....or students pay more.

Not true....some work quite hard. Majority in fact. Of course...they are hindered by the paucity in facilities.

That's truth in Television. But.....can ye blame them when in order to write a good text....ye have to have access to the latest journals. How many universities are on the ATHENS system?

Truth in Television again....but you know...bad primary school , bad secondary school.....bad uni.

Really, our primary and secondary school systems went down the drain when Gowon took them over in 73....leading to a government with too may schools to fund. Naturally....standards slipped.

Thank you. Ye have earned thyself a redemption.

Bush(would-be lecturer, and child of lecturers) doc.
Ure welcome doc Bush wink but then again I can't say I agree with u in all, despite the fact that our govt plays a crucial role in d ever dwindling standard of education in my beloved country, I also believe we just don't have committed lecturers, ones who would go the extra mile for the students. Making Nigeria a better place doesn't simply fall on d shoulders of d govt, even though they've got d lion's share of d responsibility, the citizens also have a part to play.. Let them play their part and let's see..

Merry Christmas! cool

I hated so many lecturers during my school days until one changed ma view about them. i hate the ones who act like they are more intelligent than nikola tesla. A HOD in my school was once my neighbour during my ND days. He was one strange lecturer,i hated lecturers to the extent i avoided greeting him instead he was the one now saying the good morning and good evening each time we bumped into each other in the stairs. It got to a point that i took over the good morning job from him and we became pals and even found out we both loved coldplay and micheal buble. He was different because he did not school in nigeria, all these boys wey manage get MSC or PHD no dey gree boys rest, always acting like they invented automobiles or like they bulit computers or something. copy copy lectureres!!

Thank God, you ended it with those nice words. It's not all bad. I imagine many lecturers also feel that many university students here should not really be in the university.
