Governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress
(APC) in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, has
received the endorsement of the Ikwerre Supreme
Council of Traditional Rulers in Isiokpo, the spiritual
and traditional headquarters of the Ikwerre ethnic
nationality.

The Council equally declared Dr. Peterside the sole
governorship candidate for the Ikwerre nationality for
the February 28 election. The Council comprises First
Class and all Government-recognised traditional rulers
in the four Ikwerre local government areas in Rivers
State which comprise Obio/Akpor, Port Harcourt City,
Emohua and Ikwerre.
The Council, which declared that its endorsement of
Dr. Peterside, was out of its resolve to uphold equity
and justice by ensuring that the riverine section of the
state produced the next governor, emphasised that by
its action, no other governorship candidate would
receive its endorsement. The paramount rulers
enjoined all Ikwerre sons and daughters to support Dr.
Peterside come February, 28.

While addressing the Council and other Ikwerre
stakeholders, Dr. Peterside, who was received by Eze
Blessing Wagor, JP, Nye Weli Isiokpo, other members
of the Council and a mammoth crowd of APC
supporters, underscored the importance of Rivers
people making the right and necessary decision in
choosing the next governor for the state. “Your
Majesty, we are about to make another decision as to
who will be the governor of Rivers State. Ikwere as an
ethnic nationality has a very critical role to play at this
point in time in the life of Rivers State. As custodians
of Ikwere culture, Ikwerre values, at a time of national
morale crisis, we expect the custodians of our culture
and value system as traditional rulers and fathers to
lend their voices of reason so that the people can take
the right path.

Speaking further, Dr. Peterside stressed the need for
the Ikwerre to maintain their dignity in the face of politi­
cians ready to buy people’s conscience.

In response, Eze Iriebe, who spoke through the Vice
Chairman and traditional ruler of Akpor kingdom, Eze
A.A Orlu Oriebe, Nye Weli Akpor kingdom, said, “His
Excellency-in-waiting, on behalf of Ikwerre traditional
rulers, we welcome you and your entourage to the
ancient town of Isiokpo, the ancient town of Ikwerre
tradition. The thing we are doing here today has a lot
to tell. One, you are the only person (governorship
candidate) who saw the need to visit the Traditional
Council, and that you cannot go out there to tell our
people anything without paying homage. When Christ
was born, the wise men visited Him and that is what
you have done today.
“What the Supreme Council of Ikwerre Traditional Rul­
ers requires from every son and daughter of Ikwerre
here present and those at home, is that we want this
message to reach all nooks and crannies of Ikwerre.
When the tenure of our son, our great son, The Right
Honourable Chibuike Amaechi was about to expire, the
Supreme Council asked him questions. Today, that
question has been answered. And what was that
question? The question was, “Your Excellency, with
the level you have taken Rivers State to, after your
tenure, will these things still be maintained? With all
the security challenges we have been facing, after
your exit, what will be the fate of Rivers people?
Today we want to show that the Ikwerre man is not a
greedy person. If because of the population of Ikwerre
…; if we counted on population, I don’t think our son
would be President today. But because Nigerians
agreed that power must shift, today our son from
Bayelsa is President. If we depended on the
population of Bayelsa, a man from Otuoke cannot
stand election (as President) and win. But because it
was agreed that power should shift to the minority as
the minority also has something to offer, power
shifted.
“Now coming to Rivers State, the Ikwerre would not
say because of their population no other ethnic group
should have a say.”

Addressing Dr. Peterside, Eze Iriebe enjoined him to
remain steadfast and refuse attempts to distract him.
“Having said that, we have seen that His Excellency
(Chibuike Amaechi) has found you worthy to maintain
the excellent standard Rivers State is known for
today. And we urge you not to disappoint the people
of Rivers State. Don’t be distracted by all
intimidations. We, members of the Ikwerre Supreme
Council of Traditional Rulers at this moment endorse
you, Dakuku Peterside, and declare that all sons and
daughters of Ikwerre nationality, the four local
governments that make up Ikwerre nationality – Port
Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Emohua and Ikwerre – to rally
round you. Having said that, on behalf of the Supreme
Council, I am presenting him to the people.
Eze Wagor, accompanied by Eze Iriebe, held up Dr. Pe­
terside’s hands to the cheers of the mammoth crowd.
They later handed him over to Chief Samson Agbaru,
a political leader in Ikwerre land and one-time
Secretary to Rivers State Government.
Aside top APC chieftains that included Hon. Ezemonye
Ezekiel-Amadi and Chief Chidi Wihioka, about 15 tra­
ditional rulers, all members of the Supreme Traditional
Rulers Council, were present at the event.
