There's been so
much noise about General Muhammadu Buhari's
educational background or the lack of it. I'm a
Lawyer by profession and my training has
endowed me with considerable understanding of
issues to discuss. The 1999 Nigeria Constitution
(as amended) provides as follows:
Section131states that: A person shall be
qualified for election to the Office of the
President if: a. He is a CITIZEN of Nigeria BY
BIRTH b. He has attained the AGE of 40 years c.
He is a MEMBER OF A POLITICAL PARTY & is
SPONSORED BY THAT POLITICAL PARTY; and d.
HE HAS BEEN EDUCATED UP TO AT LEAST
SCHOOL CERTIFICATE LEVEL or its
EQUIVALENT. The provision in paragraph (d)
above is the crux of the matter here. The same
Constitution provides in Section 65, sub- section
2 paragraph (a) that: "... a person shall be
qualified for election as a member of the Senate
if he been EDUCATED UP TO AT LEAST SCHOOL
CERTIFICATE LEVEL OR ITS EQUIVALENT" MY
submission: Buharis attended the Nigerian Army
Training College (later known as Nigerian Military
School and now Nigerian Defence Academy,
Zaria) in 1962 before proceeding to the famous
Mons Officer Cadet Officer School, (Royal
Military Academy) in Aldersho, UK, Defence
Services Staff College, Wellington, India and the
United States Army War College, Pennsylvania
between 1964 and 1980. Please note that the
Curriculum at the US Army War earns a scholar
a MASTER'S degree in Strategic Studies! By the
same token, Senator David Bonaventure Mark,
the Senate President parades similar
qualifications to Buhari's. Meanwhile, I wonder
why these issues were not raised in 2003, 2007
& 2011 when Buhari's chances were not so
bright. Now that he gaining mass appeal, they
remember that he's semi-literate and cannot
produce his certificates. Well, the Electoral Law
of 2010 (as amended) has no provision for
certificate verification by the Independent
National Electoral Commission . Any "concerned"
citizen can go to court to challenge the
credibility of my candidature. In all these,
General Muhammadu Buhari has my vote,those
of my household and the votes of all human
right fighters on Feb 14, 2015. What about you?
