THE controversy sur­rounding the educational qualification of the Presi­dential standard bearer of the All Progressives Con­gress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, may have finally been laid to rest by the Independent Nation­al Electoral Commission (INEC).
The commission on Wednesday posted on its website the profiles of the 14 presidential candidates and their deputies for the February 14 general elec­tion.
In the statement, INEC re­corded West African School Certificate (WASC) for Gen. Buhari.
There has been a rag­ing controversy over the academic credentials of the Katsina State-born army-turned politician in the last couple of weeks. On Wednesday, the APC claimed that Buhari’s cer­tificates were seized by the administration of General Ibrahim Badamasi Baban­gida shortly after the 1985 putsch, at which Buhari was kicked out of office.
While listing all eligible candidates for the highest office in the land and their running mates on Thurs­day, INEC indicated that Bu­hari possesses a secondary school leaving certificate.
Of the number, 23 pos­sessed either first degrees or the Higher National Diploma, HND and above while three, including Gen. Buhari had either the West African School Certificate, WASC or its equivalent.
The commission’s spokes­man, Kayode Idowu, told the Daily Times on Thurs­day night that INEC simply uploaded the information supplied by the candidates.
Six of the candidates, in­cluding President Goodluck Jonathan, have Ph.Ds.
The list showed that only seven of the 14 presidential candidates and their run­ning mates had their ages to their names.
Not even the ages of the incumbent President Good­luck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo were included.
The ages of Gen. Buhari and his running mate, Pro­fessor Yemi Osinbajo were also missing in the list.
