The idea of democracy began early in the times when the greek empire was the world power about 500 b.c and the idea was to allow discourse and reason be the guides in leadership. Even after the greek empire was overthrown by the roman empire, democracy was still in play until Julius Caesar took power forcefully after conquering Gaul; modern day spain. It was after conquering gaul that he said the famous words;"I came, I saw, I conquered! " After returning to rome; caesar, a well decorated general declared himself the emperor of the roman empire. Even after taking power, the roman senate was still in existence and functioned although with due respect for caesar's ideals. This continued until his assassination by his close comrade brutus! The idea of a senate and a democracy started as early as then with discourse and reason being the fundamental guides in leadership.

In comes buhari. An ex-dictator who since the beginning of this current campaign has not shown any democratic values. First it was not wanting to meet the constitutional requirements of presenting the minimum educational requirement for contesting. He hasn't apologised for past crimes and now doesn't even want to present himself for a public debate only staying within the realms of a well orchestrated question and answer session that suites him only.

Jonathan's government might be corrupt but let's not forget that nigeria has been corrupt since 1960. Most of the corrupt institutions today where built and catered for by past military regimes. In as much that doesn't vindicate Jonathan's government it is my belief that even if there is a change of government, corruption which has been the bane of nigerian society will not disappear but might with the kind of people promising to be change agents (tinubu, amaechi) get worse!

Buhari has not shown any signs of being able to function under a democratic setting which is the fundamental thing needed to lead nigeria today not some cooked up anti-corruption slogans! Be democratic first; the fundamental thing, then we'll talk about a manifesto!

What i find disgusting about buhari is his wanting to be Civilian President but unwillingness to subject himself to the rigours of democracy. He failed to submit his credentials. Now, he avoids debate aimed at selling his policies to the electorate. This man must be made to understand that a civilian president must subject himself to democratic rules and procedures. His actions would be questioned, scrutinized and debated. If he cannot subject himself to a debate , how would he react to criticisms when they come.

But seriously, did Jonathan attend any debates in 2011? Yet it wasn't used as a basis for his election. Buhari has credible reasons why he doesn't want to attend this debate which proves to us yet another time his level of wisdom. This whole thing is more like a setup. Buhari's point is "why is the debate not organised by a central body?" Whyis INEC not the organizer?
