When Obama won the votes of most Americans in 2008, to be elected the president of the United States, it was greeted with worldwide celebrations. Nigeria was not left out of the euphoria of someone of an African decent - a Kenyan, becoming the most powerful man in the world.

I would have thought that, this was one feat that we Nigerians would want to replicate in our heterogeneous ethnic set-up, here in Nigeria.

But how wrong I was!

Yesterday, on Channels TV, the APGA candidate in the forth-coming governorship elections in Lagos, one Robert Okoroji, obviously an Igbo man was put on the spot by the hosts of the Channels TV early morning programme - Sunrise Daily.

They read out some tweets, and instructed their guests, the Igbo politician, to demonstrate his Yoruba speaking skills. This was meant to serve as a test to confirm his eligibility to vie for the governorship of Lagos.

He was instructed by the programme hosts to translate some expressions in English to Yoruba.

Apparently, the guest wasn't a fluent Yoruba speaker. Still, he attempted it in a smattering manner.

The three host of the programme found amusement in the entire drama.

Personally, I didn't find this the least amusing.

In this time and age?!

What the hosts of the programme (Maupe Ogun, Chamberlain Usoh and Sulaiman Aledeh) demonstrated was the exact reason why millions of non-Yoruba speaking residents of Lagos State find it difficult to secure employment in Lagos!

Personally, I feel this sort of segregation based on certain variations shouldn't be encouraged. Competence should be primary.

There is no reason why a Yoruba man from Oyo, who has lived in Owerri for more than 10 years cannot be allowed to aspire for the highest elective office in Imo.

Same goes for an Urhobo man who has lived all his live in Kaduna. There should be no barrier stopping him -if he is qualified - from aspiring for the governorship in Kaduna.

However, one unique thing about Lagos is this.

Being the biggest metropolitan set-up in Nigeria, this revolution would best be started here.

If it can happen in Lagos, it will spread out to every other part of the country.

Perhaps, this is something that we should give a try.

Anyway, below is a YouTube clip of the interview.

Enjoy.

The best answer is he who come to equity must come with clean hands.

We have made them commissioner and special advisers let them also reciprocate with our own in that capacity in their land.

Can hausa be a governor in Enugu or Anambra?

Here is the reason why you thinking is very flawed. Obama might have kenyan ancestry but he has fully embraced the american way of life. He is not speaking Swahili or sheng to the people he is trying to govern. If you want to govern a place, you should fully embrace the culture and tradition among other things.

This dude might be a lagos resident for decades, But how will he even communicate with his electorates when he cant even speak their language?
If residency alone is enough to be legitimate anywhere u live, there wont be a citizenship test.

Can a Hausa man win the election in Imo state if he has been living there for 30 years and cant speak igbo?

Missy you don't get it.

It is just a trade treaty. It is like a Mexican with green card in the USA, they can't be president. The Igbo's only have green card.

The Nigeria media is not be transparent , this is why, we have problem.

Can a Yoruba man be governor in Igbo land. No.. No Yoruba have ever held an position in Igbo land. Igbo will never accept it.

That why for me. I don't complaints abroad. Knowing that no Yoruba man can ever been allowed to be anything in Igbo land or hausaland.

They are principle in life, I will like to share to Igbo people

1. Love is not given, it is earn.

2. Do unto others what you want them to do unto you.

3. A heart that is not given. Does not receive. ( I pity the catholic church on their offering table)

Igbo complaint over what they have never give others. Which is love.

So many don't complaints abroad.

That why the media needs to tell the people the truth before they move

Lagos is a no man's land.
English language is the official lamguage
Igbo language is for commercial transactions.
Hausa language is spoken in the foodstuff businesses
Yoloba is the ghetto and transport language.

Yoloba language in highbrow areas in lagos doesnt exit but yoloba language is uses mostly in the ghettos and motor parks in lagos.

Lagos is a no man's land

Have you anyone given an single appointment in Igbo land before. No. Igbo's don't don't do that.

If you have an igbo friend who becomes governor in Igbo land. Don't believe, you will ever get contract from him. People are tribalist .Even if your best friend is a northerner, he will never give you contract if he become governor of his state. People are tribalist . this is how much of discrimination that goes on in nigeria

It is what you do to people that they will judge you or your people.

If an Igbo friend or northerner friend refuse to give a mere contract. Does that not tell you how much hate there is in Nigeria.

That why Nigeria most break up? No single love in the heart of the people.
