I raised a point earlier in the rear wheels having a '\ /' position instead of being at 90 degrees to the road.

A lot of people have said it's a normal vw Beetle character and I should leave it like that.

I am not satisfied however and belive it didn't leave the factory in that position.

I would like to correct the 'problem'.

Please who can advise on what to do.

In addition, where can I get the exact new tires locally in Nigeria? I want to retain the Oem wheels albeit they being tube tires.

cc siena, CityNG, lomomike, ikenna351, nurey, nissparts, and everybody...

Opinions are appreciated

The VW 1500 (Nigerian production) had the /' on rear wheels as factory, especially with the factory slim tyre size. Changing to a fatter tyre will alter that design/shape a little bit though. But it looks better with those factory tyre sizes.

Meanwhile, you may have to edit your title. The dashboard showed its 1600 (Nigerian production) and not 1500, unless the previous owner removed and mounted 1600 dashboard on it.

Then, from the picture of engine bay you posted, I would suggest you remove the fuel hose from fuel pump to carburetor. The car engine requires original fuel hose, not that fake one. That engine bay generates a lot of heat. You don't want that hose to burst one day. Get a good OEM used one, if you can't get a new one. It must not be a VW fuel hose. Good luck.

The tyres on your Beetle would have been cross-plies on 5"x14" steel rims.

Cross-ply tyres were notorious for their poor grip. I would fit more modern (and safer) radial tyres in 175/80x14 guise.

As Ikenna stated, your style of dash was more common with the later cars, when the 1500cc motor was enlarged to 1600. The run-out 1500's however were fitted with the same square-dial dash.

when repainting go with pearl white and two black racing stripes. go with a mod black rim too. maintaining OEM might not pay.

Vehicle is a 1500 as shown with the decal attached.

Thanks about the hose... I would replace as advised... So funny garden hoses were used on some points... Lol

Thanks for the clarification. The wheels are 15". I will change the wheels as advised by Siena and CityNG.

Please which 15" wheels would fit without the customary wheel arch rub...

6"x15" wheels with 195/60x15 tyres. The original steel wheels would be 4"x15" with an offset of 34.2.

The tyres sizes I suggested will sit nicely on 6" wide wheels with an offset of 38, and will fill the wheel arches nicely without rubbing.

I am loving the thread. At 19,without my parents conscent l got my mum's vw Bettle off the garrage where it was abandoned for close to 2 years, revamped it and enjoyed it for 3 years as an undergraduate. I sometimes dream and find myself driving a similar, but I wake up to pray against moving backward. Your case is an experiment and I know the joy you will get from it will be long lasting.

A lot of Nigerians think it is a taboo to own a very old car. It is on this premise that wonderful antiques like the forgotten morris, lada, 404, Datsun 120Y, Nissan BlueBird, 504, Mercedes 'flat booth' series etc that once graced our roads have all gone extinct.

A lot of us would be surprised on first trips to saner climes to see 50 year old vehicles being more expensive than a brand new Range Rover.

It is not 'backward' to drive or own these vehicles.

Reminds me of a story of a Nigerian girl who was met on an ATM queue and was asked if she was the last on the queue. She retorted that 'She would never be the last in Jesus Name' and rejects any demonic interaction to make her the tail...

Is there a way to modify the sound of the engine of this car?

DID YOU KNOW

Planishing (from the Latin planus, "flat"wink[1] is a metalworking technique that involves finishing the surface by finely shaping and smoothing sheet metal. This is done by hammering with a planishing panel hammer or slapper file against a shaped surface called a planishing stake that is held in a vice or a mounting hole in a blacksmith's beak anvil,[2] or against hand-held, shaped, metal tools that are known as Dollies or Anvils.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planishing

The above is a skill usually called 'panel beating' in commonwealth countries like Nigeria.

In America, panel beaters are called 'Auto Body Mechanics'
