Truth About La Casera's New Product; SMOOV CHAPMAN by Niyi9091(m): 11:19am On Feb 11, 2015
Salam Alaekum Waramotu llahi Wabarakatu. You all might have seen the picture being circulated that says SMOOV CHAPMAN contains alcoholic content. The drink truly contains Angostura Extract which makes people think it is alcoholic. I have decided to make personal research as a muslim because Islam teaches us to verify the truth. This is what I found out;
Angostura is a South American plant genus, one of the species is Angostura trifoliate which is a very medicinal plant. Its bark is used to make bitters. Then the misunderstanding seems to have come from the popular alcoholic bitter which is called ANGOSTURA BITTER, a highly alcoholic drink which is 44.7% concentrated. It is misconstrued that this bitter is made from angostura bark, but the drink is actually named after a town called Angostura in Venezuela, it does not contain Angostura bark at all. So, the originator of the picture might have thought the Angostura extract in Smoov Chapman is the same Angostura Bitter because the properties given in the picture is that of Angostura Bitter Alcoholic drink which does not contain the same Angostura extract contained in Smoov Chapman.
Another similar example is Barley plant which is used to make non-alcoholic drinks is also used to alcoholic drinks. It does not mean all drinks made from Barley are alcoholic just as not all drinks made from Angostura are alcoholic. This is the result of my findings, may Allah forgive me from where I have erred. Don’t hesitate to share this information.

You are right
Here is more clarification on
Angostura (Bitters and Extract)

---Description---
Angostura is a small tree with straight stem irregularly branched, covered with a smooth grey bark, leaves alternate, petiolate and composed of three leaflets oblong and pointed, smooth, glossy and vivid green, sometimes with small white spots on them and in their first state having a tobacco-like aroma, this odour is one of the characteristics distinguishing the true Angostura from the false which is odourless.
The tree was given the name of Galipea officinalis to denote the true variety of Angostura and thus distinguish it from the very dangerous substitute and adulterant.
The characteristic of the Angostura tree is the bark which for commercial is shaved for Angostra bitters and extract. The outer layer of bark is a yellowish grey cork which is easily removed, often being soft, the inner surface is lighter brown and sometimes laminated, fracture short and resinous white, points being visible on broken surface; the transverse section shows numerous cells filled with circular crystals of Calcium Oxalate, small oil glands, small groups of bast fibres with a musty smell and bitte taste.
Three derivatives from the bark are:
• Tincture (20% in 60% ethanol)
• Fluid Extract and
• Essential Oil
---Constituents---
Angostura Bitter: The chief bitter principle of Angostura bark is Angosturin, a colourless crystalline substance readily soluble in water alcohol or ether. The bark also contains about 2.4 per cent of the bitter crystalline alkaloids Galipine, Cusparine, Galipidine Cusparidine and Cuspareine, about 1.5 percent of volatile oil and a glucoside which yields a fluorescent substance when hydrolysed by heating with dilute sulphuric acid.
After processing of Angostura bark with water alcohol or ether, the output with 44.7% alcohol is called Angostura Bitters.
Angostura Extract (Non Alcohol): The extract can be gotten through two processes:
1 The fresh Angostura Bark can be grind until fresh bitter water comes out. This water is an extract and is stored in a bottle, can or jug.
2 The fresh Angostura Bark can be grind, dry and boil with water to get the extract.
3 Also, the dark outer part of the fresh Angostura Bark can be shear, dry, grind to dust form and use as additive to food and drinks
Angostura Bark, when extracted from is sold and also used in the Australian soft drink Bundaberg Lemon, Lime & Bitters.
Essential Oil: It is rarely seen as a commercial product. Reportedly obtained in 1 to 2% yields steam distillation of the bark.
---Medicinal Action and Uses---
The bark has long been known and used as a stimulant tonic. It is most useful in bilious diarrhea, dysentery, and diseases which require a tonic. It is also employed to stupefy fish in the same manner as Cinchona is used by the Peruvians. Some doctors prefer Angostura Bark to Cinchona for use in fever cases; it is also used in dropsy.
