NAQS intercepts containers with dangerous pests
13.01.2009

THOUSANDS of pests that could be devastating to both human beings and agricultural products have been imported into the country by yet-to-be identified importers. The shocking disclosure was made by the acting Director of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), Mrs. Stella Onwuaduegbo, at the weekend in Ibadan, Oyo State.

She told the Nigerian Tribune that though the two containers containing the pests escaped the scrutiny of other security apparatus at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMA), Lagos, the officers of NAQS succeeded in tracking the illegal containers and seized them.

The containers, which she said were imported from Guinea, are now being kept at the Insectary, the Biological Control Insect Rearing Laboratory of NAQS, Ibadan head office.

When the containers were opened, she disclosed that thousands of dangerous live insects like different species of giant spiders, big-size millipedes, ready-to-attack centipedes, different species of grasshoppers and locusts, as well as millions of eggs of different types of insects with dangerous insects at different stages of development were packed and arranged inside them.

Onwuaduegbo added that the importers and the clearing agents that made attempts to clear the consignment had given the controversial containers a wide-possible berth.

The consignment, according to her, was brought into the country through an airline, without any import permit, phytosanitary licence or any clearance.

Very simple! If this is true people will want to import locust so that when there is a plague the country. The Government will be held hostage to spend money on locust.

"Breed the locust and sell the pesticide to your government."

I shake my head because We the people see the government as a Jackpot. Unless we have our wards stronger than Local government and our local government stronger than our state government this thing will go on in various dimension.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MUST CHALLENGE THE STATE, LOCAL, And WARD GOVERNMENT.

I'm still baffled on the purpose of the pests, it can't be for research cuz the person who came to clear the container

bailed upon discovering that the container had been opened. There's sumthin sinister about this, thats for sure.

@ Bawomolo

why should it not go further?

It is very easy to be Negative. What you have just done is to dream up a negative power that people will continue to offend and there will be no justice. This is a lazy mans way of thinking. Nigerians have raw strength but very negative Energy.

We need to start thinking positively. We cannot be bigger that our thought. If you asked people on Nairaland what can you with 10 bilion naira. Majority will think of acquiring material things. This is a lazy mans way of thinking.

You and I must think hard. We must have a bank of Good thoughts and keep thinking Good untill good comes. One way of solving this problem is by making the WARD LOCAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT WORK FOR THEIR PEOPLE.

THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD GIVE BACK THE OIL TO THE OWNER OF THE OIL for just 4 years and let us see which state will be more properous.

The F. Gov must Challenge the state to think. There is so much money at the center that is why people are ready to kill to be in power. The oil money is not help us we must give back the treasure to the owners. If they choose to kill themselves so be it. Let the states control their resources and pay taxes to the government.

A rich man should be known by the amount of taxes he pays not what he owns.
