Mark, Ekweremadu return to Senate

Senate President, David Mark; his deputy, Ike
Ekweremadu and the Senate Minority Leader,
George Akume, have been re-elected into the
upper chamber, just as high ranking senators like
Smart Adeyemi, Abdul Ningi and Chris Ngige lost
their bid to return.
Ngige lost to Uche Ekwunife in Anambra Central;
Smart Adeyemi lost to Dino Melaye in Kogi West
while Ningi, the Deputy Senate Majority Leader,
lost also to the All Peoples Congress candidate in
Bauchi Central.
However, Mark who is returning to the Senate for
the fifth time scored 99,538 votes to defeat his
counterpart in the APC, Daniel Onje, who scored
50,115.
Also, Ekweremadu who is returning to the Senate
for the fourth time, was declared the winner of
the Enugu West senatorial seat with120,075 out
of the 123,286 valid votes cast in the Saturday’s
election.
The INEC Returning Officer for Enugu West, Prof.
Fab Onah, explained that 10 candidates contested
the election with Ekweremadu’s closest rival,
Luisa Achieze of the APC, who scored 2,314
votes.
Also, the three senators from Ogun, Oyo and Ekiti
have lost the bid to return to the senate while
Babafemi Ojudu (Ekiti Central) did not contest.
Others, including the Senate Minority Whip, Hosea
Agboola (Oyo North), lost the National Assembly
election held on Saturday.
Ekweremadu, in a statement on Monday, said his
election was a renewal of a political covenant
with his people. He commended the electorates
for standing by him when the going was tough.
